AIRCRAFT - USMC Group Build (ends 7/30/04)

Here's the new thread for our group build. The participants are:

This should be a very fun group build, with pleanty of time (I hope!!) to get it all finished. As previously stated in the old thread, the rules are:

Any aircraft that the USMC used (fixed wing, rotor wing, gyrocopter, V/STOL, rocket, etc.) is eligible, any scale, any brand of kit. Just as long as it has USMC markings on it, and they're historically correct. That's it. If you need to drop out of the group build, for whatever reason, no problem. No one is obligated to finish this. After all, it's for FUN!! Good luck to everyone. If there are any questions, or you need advice, or you want to offer suggestions, just post them here.

I've decided on the AMT 1/48th Grumman F7F-3N Tigercat nightfighter. Has anyone else built this kit? So far, my experience with it isn't so great, BUT, I have tackled tougher kits. What's your opinion of it?

Stoomfluit, I just gotta ask - what's the origin behind your screen name? Very unusual, to say the least.

Gary, you may want to drop Lawrence Hanson a note too. David been answering e-mails, but I haven't seen him on the board of late.

As a recap from the other thread, I'm working on an F-4J Phantom with the markings for VFMA-333 from their 1972 (I think) cruise on the U.S.S. America.

I have a couple of pictures I can post, I just need to find them. :D

Sweet, I'm here as well...building a Tamiya 1/48 F4U-2 Nightfighter.....just got my Omni 5000 on Fri, and painted Zinc Chromate on her last night!!! Man, that AB is sweet!!! Mischief [:-,]

Looking forward to this.... I have some work to do still on my Texan. That one is taking a little while because I have to customize all my decals....but I'm anxious to start my SBD-1.

Now my only problem is to figure out which of the many Marine squadrons AM refers to in the instructions should I make my Dauntless [:0]

Can I sign up too? I've been working on Italeri's 1/72 scale CH-53E. It's not a very good kit, but I have alot of plans as far as weathering goes. HMH-464 out of Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, NC is my unit, so I'd like to give it our "Condor" Markings.

I'm wrapping up on 2 Hasegawa's 1/72 Hornet kits. The F-18C VMFA-251 and the F-18D VMFA (AW)-225 markings, both looking good and have just started on the 1/72 EA-6B and may start on the 1/48th version too. Just running out of space for everything.

Gee, can I sign up as well? and where are the rules or guidelines. I just started a Marine AV-8B that I am sticking a black box cockpit set into and am going to apply markings for VMA-311 (also have an esci A4-C in the same markings) Big Smile [:D]

addendum: Found the original thread. I just hope that I am not too late. This one looks like fun and I have never had a chance to participate in a group build.

Okay, here are a few pictures showing the Phantom after I had glued, filled, sanded, and primed it. It's a Monogram 1/72 scale kit of the F-4J. It's a nice kit. It has raised panel lines, but I think they look good.

Oops, here's one more. I did the stripes on the missiles with Pactra tape. The areas where the stripes go are raised rings on the missiles. It doesn't look too bad when looked at at a distance of more than six inches.

You can also see one of the downfalls of this kit: ejector pin marks. They're all over the place, and I didn't feel like spending forever fixing them.

I just remind her of the rules. Two kits of one subject type count as one. Any kits that I just can't remember buying don't get counted. Any kits that I bought because they were on sale don't get counted. These few simple rules usually help to bring my collection down to reasonable numbers... besides, a night on the couch is a small price to pay for a few new kits. Tongue [:P]

GUYS!!!!! Sorry I'm just now getting back on (5 Feb 2004), but I had to go to Miami to put out a "fire", figuratively speaking. It sucked having to leave Miami's 80 degree weather to come back to snow and sleet in Indianapolis. Disapprove [V]

Oh well. Such is the life of an electronics engineer.

Anyway, it seems as though others have found out about our group build, and would like to participate. Are there any objections? I know I said that 31 January 2004 would be the cut-off date, but, I don't mind if no one else does. As long as everyone posts a picture of their model on this thread on 30 July 2004 (not before!!!!)(in-progress photos excluded from that stipulation), then I can't see why not. Maybe we should waive the entry deadline? What do you guys think?

That's a great-looking Phantom so far. I remember when I was in Iwakuni back in 1989, TripTrey (as VMFA-333 is affectionately called) was, and still is, flying Hornets. Good Luck!!

By the way, VMFA-333 was decommissioned in March of 1992. They flew one heck of a lot of planes: Dauntlesses, Hellcats, Corsairs, Skyraiders, FJ-3 Furies, Crusaders, Phantoms, and Hornets.

Gary, I think getting rid of the entry deadline is a great idea!! I think since the topic became sticky, it's been a topic everyone sees.....as for an Omni 5000, it is an airbrush made by Thayer & Chandler (distibuted by Badger). I just got it this weekend, and I've been using it nonstop....after previously using an Aztek.....Let's just say they are worlds apart!!!! LOL Tongue [:P]

Right now, I am waiting on some Eduard PE, and a resin seat for my F4U-2, but should have some in progress pics in a couple of weeks!!!

Kik36 - I know what you mean about your Omni500. I just laid my hands on an Iwata AB
(on sale none the less) and just love the little sucker. I am a previous Paasche VL user.
Now I got 2 AB's and compressors (firm believer in duplication for those unexpected moments, besides I am also a pack-rat :0) )

Anyone know of an AV-8B II night attack conversion? My searches yesterday ended in brick walls.

I've got the Aztec Double Action brush, with the nice little wooden storage box & 6 tips & a few paint bottles. I love that thing!! Of course, I haven't used anything else, so I can't really compare it to any of the other brushes out there. I do like the fact that it's easy to clean, and, if it goes bad, Testor's will replace it for the life of the brush (or, so they say!!).

I'll try to have some in-progress pictures of my F7F-3N on-line as soon as I can. The last time I tried to post some pictures, they never materialized. Maybe I'll get luckier this time.
