Floatie Thingies - Seaplane Group Build (May-Oct. 2012)
Posted by DoogsATX on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 10:47 AM

Summer's fast approaching - and how better to mark the blazing heat of the unrelenting summer sun than a group build for those awkward, ungainly aircraft designed to operate from the cool, refreshing water?

This group build's open to any and all seaplanes. If it flies, and is designed to land on water, it's eligible. So PBY Catalinas, Kingfishers, Arado Ar 196es, Rufes, even what-ifs. Slap some floats on a Mustang and call it a Seahorse for all I care.

Crossovers are welcome. So are partials, so long as you haven't started throwing actual paint at the thing yet.

The build will kick off May 1 (you can start early if so inclined), and new entries will be accepted through September 30.

Look for a badge soon - think I found a great image to build one from.

Ah, another GB that I'm going to try to commit to.  Too interesting to resist even though I'm still trying to finish my CR42 for the 'That's Amore" GB.  Okay, I'll bite with a Japanese 1/48 seaplane. I'll have to check my stash to remind myself which ones I have.

Hey Doogs. Please put me down for a 1/48 Tamiya Aichi M6A1 Seiran. I've been wanting to do: A) my first Japanese AC and B) my first floatplane, so now I have a reason to do so. I've really liked this plane since I saw it in a magazine a few months ago!

I have couple of partial RUFEs (Zeros on floats). Will dig out some pics to see if they qualify in terms of how much work has been done. if not, I have the Classic Aiframes Fiat ICR.42 Idrovolante or Fly Models Macchi M.5 Italian Flying Boat on the Italian side. Or I can stay IJN/IJA with Hasegawas' Kawanishi H8K2 (Emily) Type 2 or Trumpy's H6K5.

cheers

Hi DoogsATX ;

I recently picked up the 1/72 Mach 2 Convair YF2Y-1 Sea Dart kit

There doesn't appear to be that many parts to the kit and probably wouldn't take too long to complete

The single page/diagram instructions look fairly straight forward

Even though I've fallen a little behind on some other projects , I think I should be able to complete the Sea Dart within the GB time frame .

I am a new modeler and have been considering joining a group build.  I would build a Curtiss R3C-2.  (This is the plane built for the 1925  Schneider Trophy race and piloted by Col. Jimmy Doolittle).  The kit is the Testors Classics Kit.

It does appear so.  Might they be combined?  Either way, I'm game.

Has anyone heard from Doogs re: this group build?  His last post on this thread was April 17, and there appears to be no official group activity  or announcements since then.  I have sent him a PM, but am still waiting for a reply.  Just wondering if it is an active group build, or if it has been abandoned.  Anyone know?

Yeah I'm here - sorry guys, I started this one up when my eyes were bigger than my appetite. I don't have the bandwidth to run it, but if someone else wants to take the ball, feel free...

Doogs,

Yeah, that can happen ... you should see me on crab leg night at the buffet, LOL!  I'd be happy to take the helm on this one, since you offered.  Got a thing for floatplanes/seaplanes.  Is everyone else onboard OK with that?  Open for questions/comments/suggestions ... Geeked

Thanks, Doogs!

randypanda831 and waynec:  There is a new thread for this build, and this one is being abandoned.  The new thread is Floatplane/Seaplane Group Build 2012.  Please join us there to post, or re-post for this build.

All:  Please post for this GB in the thread entitled Floatplane/Seaplane Group Build 2012.

Thanks,
