Update on the Spruce trainer.   Base colour arrived at by using orange yellow to start.  Finding it a tad too strong in the orange side, so applied another coat mixed approximately 50/50 with golden yellow.

Up next is some final details and painting on the exterior, wing struts and wheels.  Then I can start the rigging wires.

regards,

Jack

Scratch building some of the finer details:

Navigation lights on the top wing were carved out, followed with a strip of plastic sheet glued to close it up, and sanded flush to the wing shape.  Once the aircraft is painted, the hollowed out areas will be filled in with special clear liquid.

The control arms that were added are just hollow brass .3mm size.

Handholds on the wingtop were added, created same way as the lights.

Remaining handholds and foothold were made from the wire of a twist tie.  Holes were drilled into the fuselage so the glue had a place to pool, and add some strength - this way the detail isn't just precariously sitting on the surface.

Jack

Thanks Misty.  LOL!  Shelf of doom!  I hear ya.  I wasn't expecting much from PM in the first place, but this one really feel short.  Not that there is a tremendous amount of detail of A T-38 anyway, but zero detail in the cockpit was a surprise.  I hope to spray tonight when I get home.

I am sure you will turn it in to a nice result Eagle. reminds me of a f104 i bought. i took one look at it in the box and consigned it to the shelf of doom forever. didnt bother removing a single piece from the sprue.

Hey everyone.  Finally got to the bench again.  Having basement issues and have had to rearrange everything, but got some time last night to hit the plastic.

This kit from PM is not impressing me much to be honest.  I have done a couple of PM's Luft '46 kits and was not surprised by the lack of detail....considering no one knew what the detail would have been!  But the T-38 has NO cockpit at all and the exterior has little or no detail either.  So, I'll press on and make it look as good as I can.  Oh, and it came with a missing part, so the gear will have to be up.  The nose gear door is no where to be found.  The filling and sanding is the time killer here and what I have been doing to it mostly.  Hope to start painting this weekend.

Thanks guys, and Theuns, your compressed air tank suggestion also sounds valid.

For sure, this is one of those builds where the Mk.I eyeball is relied on greatly, as well some intuition.

I am not farmiliar with this particular plane, I do know some (eastern block) planes had/have a compressed air tank used for operating the brakes and sometimes the starter.

Looks like a chalenging build you got there!  Good luck

John, that's interesting and could very well be it.  Was this standard on 1930's era aircraft?

Another bump,

...  finally started on the resin kit of the Ki-9 Spruce.  I'm guessing this thing is hand cast, really rough looking in some aspects, so much so that is almost embarrassing to share after the quality builds that have preceded it.

I've pinned the lower wings with brass rod for better strength, and already have done some putty and sanding of the fuselage seam.

I do have question,  does anyone recognize the part I have pointed out in the photo?  The pour stubs are still attached at either end.  I can't find it on the instructions, which is only a single diagram.  Oddly, the parts are numbered on paper, but that is of no help since the actual resin parts are not numbered.

regards,

Jack

Would it be possible to show all the badge candidates in one place?

Tony, one thing missing from that group photo, need a bowl of dip to go with all those chips - ha!

Seriously, great work on these, and that red one is pretty keen looking too.

----------------------------------------------

Theuns, nicely done, can't go wrong with yellow to catch the eye.  Rigging also looks good and taunt.

Nice finish on the Ryan, Theuns.  I suggest thread for ropes on the canopy cover.  The rigging looks great.

another lovely yellow finish, i am getting jealous. love the bag over its head too Propeller the Ruskies do that to a lot of the new jets when they are parked up on the tarmac so you are in good company.

Guys, I am calling my 1/48 PT-20done. I have in the meantime painted the tailwheel (not in the pix) and I have been lazy and cheated by not including pilots to hide to total lack of ANY detail in the cockpit, hence the "cockpit cover"  LOL

Thats a lovely collection there. I am becoming very partial to the yellow finish. I may have to find something to build to paint yellow. I have a ferrari but i looove ferrari red too.

I have lost wheels on two builds this year already, I must cut that out, very annoying.

Righto, I've finished these two Chippies, one more to go and I'm done with my project. Here's some photo's, as well as the Chippy collection (Chipset ?)

Cheers

Tony

Just love'm!

As for my PT-20, I have done the decals last night and after loads of microsol got the rudder decal to sit OK. Still need to toutch up where the decal did nit cover the bottom to well.

I have gone and lost my tail wheel, so will have to raid the spares box to see what I can get, and then only the rigging remains.

Here's another couple of WIP photos of my two Chipmunks, getting close now. They're not my best models, by a long stretch, but that wasn't my goal this time. Decals on the Candian one were a challenge, as they were from an early 1970s Airfix release. I used some aftermarket RCAF roundels, wing walks from a recent release Chipmunk kit, and the kit decals were exposed to sunlight for two weeks to reduce yellowing, then coated with Microscale Liquid Decal Film. They're not perfect, but they're on.

Cheers

Tony
