I brought it up in my history classes yesterday, and most of my students remembered it from when I taught WWII a few months ago. Made me feel pretty good, or at least like I made a difference.

I know what you mean. There was a flyover of the Washington DC Mall yesterday of WWII aircraft. Quite a few folks stopped to look at them, but it certainly didn't stop the city. I enjoyed it, though. Got to see a P38 Lightning in flight, as well as a B17, a B24 with invasion stripes, and a number of fighters that were too high up for me to identify.

There have been a number of events here to mark it. yesterday there was wreath laying at the Cenotaph and there are more events today. There has been quite a bit of coverage of it all, not bad seeing we just had the general election.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Don't think this is the correct forum for this, but I think Merlin said it best:

It's sad in the fact that the sacrifices made during those years are not honored when these dates come around. I was doing internet research on the Air Guard in Memphis, TN when I came across a picture and story of a B-24D named "The Spirit of Beale Street". The African-American churches in Memphis held a war bond drive and collected over $300,000; enough to purchase a bomber. Mind you, this was in a Southern town, with segregation a part of life, and a financial position that was far from ideal, especially coming out of the great depression. It leaves me speechless, and grateful.

I was quite disappointed at the lack of acknowledgment of this important day by most of the media.  Seems like anyone under 50 knows jack s. about it.  Sad.

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...
