It's sad in the fact that the sacrifices made during those years are not honored when these dates come around. I was doing internet research on the Air Guard in Memphis, TN when I came across a picture and story of a B-24D named "The Spirit of Beale Street". The African-American churches in Memphis held a war bond drive and collected over $300,000; enough to purchase a bomber. Mind you, this was in a Southern town, with segregation a part of life, and a financial position that was far from ideal, especially coming out of the great depression. It leaves me speechless, and grateful.
