Great Job Toshi! That is one to be proud of. YesBeer
I assembled the fuse today and applied some filler. I forgot to drill the holes for the drop tanks so it's going to be fun finding where those go and drilling them from the exterior.

Thank you modelcrazy.  Your build is turning out great!

Steve try and shine a very bright light from the top of the wing down. Sometimes you can catch a color difference in the plastic. Don't melt wing

Toshi - A very impressive build sir ! Yes  Thanks for taking the time to photograph and post the build details and your progress along the way. That has got to be one giant model !  Even a 1/72 Mossie takes up alot of space on my build shelf.

It looks very nice with all the open panels. The dropped flaps also add interest.

She's a beauty to behold.

Lots of talent as usual on board on this GB. Some real beauties are being put together by you guys.

TJ

That has hapenned to me a couple of times and it makes difficult to find the holes but the light trick mentioned usually works out.

I finally started on my Spit Mk. IXc from ROG. The details are trully awesome and IMO needs nothing more. The pit is gorgeous. The seat and bulkheads have some fine looking details. The IP should be a knockout once it's painted up.

First the obligatory box top shot

Check out the details on the seat and frame, front

and even the back has fine detail. Too bad they won't be visible once closed up in the fuselage.

the IP looks sweet

side panels

The pit is ready for some RAF Green and washes. More to come.

Hi Toshi, a fine example of the Mossie you have presented here. Yes

Was interesting to see it come together, but all that extra detail takes it to a higher level - great stuff!

Best of luck on the Spit PJ: probably cost a lot less than the Tamiya 1/32.

I'm not sure what I think of 1/32. As a practical matter a 1/32 WWII plane is not in the cards with me - space is a serious problem. (1/32 is certainly preferred for a WWI plane.) The 1/48 Beaufighter I'm doing now is pretty big - very glad I've gone to 1/72 for most bombers.

I know some really good modelers admire 1/32 for the reasons you cite - superior detail and the impact of size in a display model. (Wonder what the HK 1/32 B-17 is like: yikes. A little like 1/200 WWII battleship - take an extra basement to display one of those.) But frankly for yours truly, I think 1/48 for WWII fighters is perfect (don't do jets - if the Lord wanted men to fly, he would have given us propellars). A good kit at 1/48 is fine for display. More to the point, how much time does one want to spend on a project. I can suffer from project fatigue in my old age - a reason why I still can't explain why I still do ships regularly. A 1/32 plane (or a 1/16 tank) would be a "Project." (I've got some 1/48s Projects too - the AM B-25 and Dragon's ME-110 come to mind.) I've come to like seeing a model begin to resemble a plane in a few days and begin to think about the next project in a couple of weeks. I'm also buying new tool Tamiya tanks (incredible engineering) in place of Dragon and darn the detail. Different strokes in this hobby for sure. A good pal of mine does flyable biplanes (maybe 1/6?): a kit will be six months and scratch a year. Another gent I know does wonderful sailing ships from scratch: figure a year minimum. No doubt the concentration required for that kind of stuff also shows skills beyond mine.

Thanks Bish and Check.

Eric

This ROG kit was about $32 so it's way less than the Tamiya. I like 1/48 but I love 1/32 since it's easier on my eyes and handling larger parts. Bad thing is they need more display space. I have been dealing with some 1/72 subjects specially Tomcats (my favorite jet) and they pack the same level of detail as their larger brothers. Heck if I had the space i would model 1/24 aircraft and 1/24 armor.

Even Bish who is a 1/72 dude has been playing around with 1/32! Indifferent

I must say i think Revell produce some very nice 32nd kits and at a very good price.

And yep, i have a small selection of 32nd kits, but 72nd is still my favorite scale for the selection, space saving and dio potential. Fortunatly the Germans did not have that many really large aircraft, so until some one comes out with a 1/32nd Fw 200 Big Smile i don't have to worry to much.

Ye, i have that as well, along with a Ju 88 and He 111. But the Germans didn't have the selection of larger 4 engined aircraft the Allies had and we are now starting to see in 32nd. I've seen the HK B-17G, that thing took up most of the table at the model club night.

Now your talking. I am wondering if HK will start to come out with some German subjects. Would be nice to see Revell do one, i just don't understand why they are bringing out another He 219 rather than somthing new.

PJ very nice kit, it's refreshing to sight a kit which dosent require AM to bring it to life.

Look forward to the build. You wouldn't by any chance be doing a seperate WIP on the build?

So I have made significant progress with my Mossie, but have ran into problems with missing images.

I completed the engine nacells, fuselage,  wings,  horizontal stabliser, wing attacment and seam filling and the only photos I can find are after the first primer coat and after the base colour was shoot and camo masking. I have checked the SD card, my download directory and my back ups and all to no avail.

MRP white primer coat showed significany "ghost" seams which took ages to resolve. As the primer is laquer based, it probably reacted with mr desolved filler originally used. CA all the way next time.

Once the seams and other areas were sorted, I AB decanted and thinned Tamiya AS11 base, wet sanded and then another light coat. I then started the Camo masking using 3M masking and airbrush masking film which I got from my local signwriting company, The Sign Company (Thanks Twist). The kit came with full size camo layouts for the NF version with a black underside, this version was not in service long due to drag issues, so I just used the camo layout, which is not accurate but I had limited refernce photos, which is a poor excuse.

I used more Tamiya AS paint (AS9) which again I decanted and thinned and sprayed.

I copied the supplied painting scheme that Mr. Tamiya kindly supplied. Placed it over the masking film and cut through both print and film. I know the edges are hard, but my POV is that if you stand 1m away from the model to view it, in scale your actually 48m away. So hard edges it is.

Next steps are minor fix ups, gloss coat and decals...

Hi Damian

Nope no separate WIP, just this one. Yes this one will be OOB and no AM stuff except maybe belts and I can whip them bad boys out with some wine bottle foil and thin wire.

Your skeeter is looking very good and too bad about the missing pictures.

damouav:

Is the 3M masking film adheshive? I think some is and some isn't. The Tamiya Beaufighter also has a scale masking diagram and I might as well use it. (That's a really nice touch and would cost almost nothing. Wonder why that isn't widely done.)

Maybe someone can clarify this, but as I understand it RAF fighters were painted at the factory and had a pretty hard edge. (I believe Luftwaffe mottling was a field application and hence unique to each aircraft.) But some photos argue otherwise. Suppose it's possible that workers used a big airbrush to paint the camo - some photos make look very hard, others a little feathered. Also maybe we shouldn't look at color photos unless you know it's from wartime - a restored plane might be done with more care.

Think someone on YTube has a video on making belts with Apoxie sculpt. I did it and the belts were terrific - a little more work on metal parts and they'd look much better than PE. Eric

Hello All,

Great to see more people (Damo & Eric) joining . . .  Howdy !

Nice interior work Damo - and the gear and gear door work is very fine.  That Mossie sure came together quickly.

Eric - that's quite a large interior to build.  Nice work on the paint mixing.  I kinda like mixing my own colors once in a while as well.  I use MM acrylics and they have some, but not all of the colors that are typical of British WWII A/C.  Particularly for Fleet Air Arm Schemes and RAF Desert Schemes.  So I've had to mix those colors in the past for a Swordfish and Desert P-40.

Check - Great micro-work on the 1/72 Hampden gear.   That's some nice detail.

Johnny - My condolences - Better luck with yer Jag.

Beav - I had a coworker a few years back who was often heard to say (at appropriate times)  "Ya can't polish a turd"   That Walrus ain't no turd my friend - she's lookin' pretty sparkley !

Steve - The Tornado looks great so far.  Do the Swing-Wings work on that kit ?

PJ - I agree - those pit parts look really nice - waiting to see your skills do magic on them.

The Hurri is back on the work table.  Finished up the gear bays, landing gear, and prop today.  So she's on her feet.  A little more painting, then decaling, and a bit of fiddley parts, clear parts, and finishing.

Hope to have some daylight pics for you tomorrow.

Chris
