Real G

Hey is that photo from Devo’s “Greatest Hits” album?  Stick out tongue

BTW, despite all the vitriol being hurled at it, has anyone bought the new Airfix 1/72 MiG-17 yet?

Nope. Haven't seen the new Airfix MiG 17 yet, but my Hasegawa MiG 17 is moving along. I've just cut a hole in the bottom of the fuselage to accept an Airfix display stand. I do enjoy my little Dremel.

OK. In the stash: Way too much to build in one lifetime...

Another Mig update....

Got the Atolls assembled and cleaned up, their rails and pylons

Got most of the aircraft assembled and getting close to the Alclad stage

I used the inside of a chip bag that has the chrome finish to punch out two small discs to use as the reflectors for the lights. This works really good and the lights look very realistic and way cheaper than using MV lenses.

I love how well this Eduard kit is detailed and assembles, just a pure pleasure.

The potato chip bag idea is brilliant!

Reskit just released a resin tire set for the RA-5C Vigilante, which I have on order.  And Caracal announced a new decal sheet, so I think that is the signal to get back on the Trumpy kit!  I am trying to figure out a cheapo way to fake intake tunnels at the moment.  If not, it'll have to fall back and punt, and use the FOD covers.

Thanks G and C.

G a cheap and effective way to simulate the fading tunnel effect is to shoot white inside the intakes then using the air brush make a small oval in black with soft lines on the back piece on the sides connecting to the fuselage. This will fool the human eye into simulating the trunking fading away. I will try to find pictures of a commission I did using this method.

They are all nice but I really like the F-100.  Thanks, CB.  People could also choose the one they like of the three.  What do you all say?

Great job CB! Beer All three look great and I'm having a hard time choosing one. I have to think on this one but it wouldn't be a bad idea to leave the three open. Liking the last one.  Yes

Ok, This is a first for me. I mean, I lose parts and tools all the time, but this is the first time I have lost a bottle of paint. I just used it yesterday. Has anyone seen my bottle of Tamiya XF-67? I swear I've been looking for it for 1/2 a day... Guess I'll be heading to the hobby shop... (and yes, I looked in the trash) Surprise

Did you have any other models out at the time? You may have put the bottle in one of the boxes by mistake. Where did you use it last? Look there.

Thishappens to me all the time with my glasses. I taken them off and without a thought I lay them down and forget where .

Just the other day I went to Lowes and showed the sales clerk a picture on my phone of the item I wanted then came home. Then I couldn't find my phone and swore I left it at the store so off at warp speed I went back in the wife's car and nothing there. My daughter-in-law found it in the garage on top of the rear bumper of my Tundra where I placed it as I came into the house earlier. Then I remembered as I was getting out of the car I almost dropped the phone and laid it on the bumper next to me so I could carry the two bags I had. Propeller

Haha, PJ, I have a similar story with my wallet not too long ago. But I digress.

I have found the missing bottle of paint. I sometimes sit my model on top of a jar of paint with a 2 x 1 inch piece of foam (upside down sanding sponge actually) on top the lid to keep it from scratching the model. Well, the foam was like a mini cammo net hiding the bottle... blast! well at least I found it...

Decals done. A nice wash and a flat coat and it's on to things under wings.

I did a little different technique this time to get a better NMF effect. I use a similar effect when spraying light greys like on the F-14's except I use black, white, tan, greens etc. for the marbling under the greys.

I shot the gloss enamel and then marbled it with metallic dark grey. This will break up the solid metal color and give it a better tonal quality. I then shot it with Alclad Chrome in an uneven fashion and followed with Alclad Polished Aluminum. It created subtle tonal changes on the paint breaking up that solid monotone look. Click on the pictures for closeups.

Later today I will mask off several panels and shoot different Alclad colors to get some variation in panel colors and shoot the dark metal engine area at the rear.

Cb

I mask over all Alclad colors with no problem. I usually let it sit at least 30 minutes and try to use Post It paper or regular masking tape a couple of hours after application.

The stuff in the wells are little soft packing foam blocks that I cut to size.

Shot some panels in different Alclad shades for subtle tonal variation. Click on the pictures for closeups.
