Wrong.  On many forums it's bad forum etiquette to post in old threads just for the sake of bringing the thread to the front.  It even has a term "Necro-bumping." 

It pushes newer relevent threads down and clutters up the "present-day" or current forum with disjointed old information.  

Simply bringing up an old thread just to say "Good job" to a post from five years ago is rather silly.  If people want to see this information they can search for it themselves.

Search on google for this if you don't believe me.

MTFACO is definately worth getting the catalog from, good quality stuff metal and resin, reasonable prices and interesting subjects from tools to truck cabs. Only "problem" I had was it takes awhile to get the stuff so have patience, he's got a nice Mack Model B cab I want to build up someday. Its too bad there is no online catalog but my guess is he's a hobbiest running a small buisness and gets all the orders he needs without the hassle of the internet.

I think I am going to have break down and order me one of the catalogs from MTFACO. They seem to have alot of great stuff.

Weather just wasn't cooperating since I have to spray outside, so since time was running out, last week I decided to switch to something I might actually be able to finish within the deadline (so I missed by one day, had to go trick or treating with the little one last night). This is Revell's '29 Ford Model A 3 in 1 kit, done as a US Forest Service Mountain Fire Truck. The pumper unit in the pick up bed is scratch built from styrene stock, brass tubing, wire and washers. The hand tools and indian pump can are from Model Truck and Fire Apparatus Co. The red light on the hood is something I cast in resin. I made the decals using photoshop and my printer.

That looks great, you really did a nice job. Hopefully I will get some time to finish mine up, still waiting on parts for the truck I was going to build so I'll be sticking with the two tankers.

Been awful quite in here for a while. I made a good deal of progress in the past few days. Got the main truck components completed and assembled. Also rummaged around in the in the spares box and found some stuff to use for equipment. Heres the results so far.











Here is the stuff I found.



A few notes on the stuff:

The fire extinguisher is a spare welding gas cylinder from the Dragon Wagon. Just need to chop it down a bit and add the collar around the top of it.

Ext. Bracket is some part from my Panther I built that seemed to fit the diameter of the cylinder perfect, just need to add a strap to it.

The part of a haligan is a some type of tool left over from I think the Panther. Just need to extend the handle and add a spike.

Gauges are some small road wheels from something that the backs of wil work fine. Just need to print out some gauge faces.

Hose reel handle is something left over froma tank, another one of those things that I know what it is used for but can't think of it. But it happens to the exact thing I need for the hose reel handle.

PE fret is fromt he 1/144 tanks and I am going to attempt to make some tool clamps from it. I repeat attempt. :D

Thanks Aaron. He did do alot better with the badge than I would have been able to as well.
I hope the nozzle issue is just some kind of fluke we seem to be haveing. I really like the paint and want to use it on a few other builds for sure.

I have made no progress in about a week now. Something about that work deal takeing up 13 or 14 hours of my day right now . Hopefully I will get a chance to get something done this week though. Probally start on the discharges and intakes. Any ideas on how to go about putting threads on the tubeing?

I like the group badge, I noticed the other day that there wasn't one for the build yet and was thinking about trying to make one with a fire engine, tanker and police car, Quagmire must have read my mind Smile [:)] I think his looks better than mine would have though.

Your engine is really coming along nicely, you just may inspire me to finish the '50 chevy engine I started during the Scale Auto EV build.

The bit about the nozzle makes sense, this latest can was working fine at first and then started spewing really bad from under the nozzle. I'll try to tighten it before I use it again.

Ok guys thanks to Quagmire, we have a badge for this GB. here is what he came up with

Here is some of the things I have gotten done on it.

I did'nt like the thin look of the running boards so I added a side piece to them. Here is how it looked prior to being foiled.



I put the front bumper on and did a bit of a wash on the grill useing Tamiya Smoke paint.



And I put the wood for the hose bed and side rails on to it as well. This part turned out better than I had expected. Used balsa strips and stained them with dark walnut Minwax on a q-tip with most of it soaked off.





Looks like I have the house to myself for most of the weekend so hopefully I get a decent bit accomplished in between doing boot drives for the fire dept.

Aaron- Starting to come right along. I still have not heard from Krylon about it. I did notice though that with the one I have the paint comes from around the base of the nozzle. I tired twisting the nozzle down more on the the stem and that seemed to help a bit.

Eclipse- Welcome to the forum. Nothing really to do but build a model. Just look at the first post in this thread for all the details and let us know what you want to build. It's all about having fun.

That '46 is looking great, shame about the suspension, funny how so many of the stock models come with parts to hot rod them but its rarely the reverse.

Ok, despite being on vacation I didn't get nearly as much building done as I'd planned. I kind of got caught up in building ACE's Grumman AF Guardian air tanker, thought it would be a quicky build, boy was I wrong. I'll post a pick of it when I'm done since it falls under the groupbuild. I've been plugging away at the S2 and P2, cut away the various rader bulges and built up the tanks. Still need to put the doors in but that should be fairly easy.

Went and got myself a photobucket account to make it easier to post pics. Built a photo "booth" out of foam core board and bought a tripod to try and make photo's better and the background more uniform. Kind of works but obviously I still need some practice and a bigger light (2 x 150w, I think I'm going to add a 500w halogen.)

Tried Black Krylon Fusion, no problem with leakage, bought another can of white and it leaks like crazy. I like the paint but what a mess.

Figure I would do an update, been a bit quite in here for a little while.

Managed to rearrange the front hieght of the truck after all. Just could'nt get to completly likeing the stance it had. Popped off the suspension stacked a couple of strips of styrene on it and glued it back on. I think it has a bit of a better stance now. Also put the last coat of paint on, shiney enough I don't think that it needs any polishing.



View of the back. Had to rework the layout so that it would work with the hose reel installed. Still have to put the diamond plate on. This was probally the most frusterating so far to get to work right. have a nice stack of styrene sheet from messing up.



Got the running boards cut and fit to the truck and foiled. These were probally the hardest thing to get cut right so far. used alot of templates.



I decided to start in on the hard suction hose that goes on the racks. I used a piece of aluminum tubeing and for the couplings just took some thin sheet styrene and wrapped it around the ends in whichever way to get it to look like the appropriate male and female ends. This is one out of the two I have to do , after spending more time than I would like to admit on this one , I am not looking forward to the second. The handles I got lucky with. I cut the side things off the wheel spinners and noticed they were the exact shape I was needing for the handles on the hose., recessed area and all.

This is a newer version of a smoothbore hose that I am doing.


And my version pre paint.


Also put the bumper on and headlights and also put a wash in the grill.


Now just need to do the other hose and finish up the running boards to be on the home stretch.

Have not been able to get to much done over the last week. That real life thing popped up. I did finish up the hose racks. I added some small tubeing for part of the clamps that will be holding the hose on. I also had been searching for a way to do the rear fenders. The ones that came with the truck kit that I am baseing it on would not work. The other day I happen to look at one of my kids' juice bottle he was drinking out of and saw the fenders. After cutting the bottom out and alot of test fitting and alot of more cutting, I think I have it now curves along the sides and all. Also put the first coats of paint on the rear, more of that to come also.

Hey thanks for that link, I think I'll go cry now, kind of makes me feel like a kid with crayons. That was one nice build too bad he dropped it.

I have no idea about the spray nozzles, good idea though. Glad the link works for you, it is surprising how hard it is to find older tankers, I can find a gazillion DC4, S2, C130, CL415 etc but anything pre 1990 or so is hard to come by, I guess that generation isn't into posting their photos online, too bad I'm sure there are some great modelling resources laying about in photo albums and boxes we can't see.

That second link is for the airservice that operated the aircraft I saw 33 years ago! That is so valuable to me. Thank you.

As for the nozzle question, does anybody know of a way to purchase nozzles without the spray cans? I would think that might be a good thing to pass on to us modellers.

Aaron, I asked Firemodelman if he has had the same problem since he has used Fusion a good bit. He said he has never had it happen to him. I was thinking and the thought occured to me that maybe it was fromt he nozzle being turned to a certain pattern that the edge of the spray was hitting the can. I am going to paint the body on my truck tonite or tommorow and will turn the nozzle to the other pattern and see what happens. I hope it is just a bad batch of nozzles or something myself.

With the Fusion, considering how much attention I was spending on not spilling paint everywhere, I must admit the paint job came out pretty good, but I don't care for the filling up the neck with paint. If they fix that I'd consider using it again it does dry fast and I didn't have any trouble with drips. Let me know if you find out that it was a bad set of nozzles or something, sounds like we had the same problem.

Mojo, here are the only photos online I've found of the F7F as a tanker, "unfortunately" the tankers have been very popular for restoration back to their military beginnings (I say unfortunately because I think its too bad none have been saved as tankers but I'd prefer to see them flying in their military colors than rotting in a field )

I'm planning on doing the second one eventually. I would guess it is similar to what you saw since SisQ was based out of Northern California and your right it was Harrahs and probably a PB4Y2, it was at least 20 years ago but I still remember having a picnic on the side of the highway at some rest stop watching the tankers come in.

The 'B-24' you saw was a PB4Y Privateer, the Navy single tail version of the B-24. I saw one of those at the Reno Air Races in 1976 dropping red, white and blue water for the Bicentenial. The car collection in Reno is at Harrah's and a must see if you're there!

I can't find the box that the tank came in, but I've seen references to Ventura Hobbies and Lone Star for resin tanks. I'm trying to find photos of the aircraft we saw, but haven't had any luck just yet.

I experienced the same ordeal with the leaking down onto the base of the nozzle. Did not realize it until I shook it and wound up with red hands. I think I am going to ask around my self to see if this is a common occurance or not. I love the result I got out of it so I would hate to have to not use it. At least for the rest of the build I know to watch out for it.
Just sent an email to thier customer service dept. maybe at least get some free paint if nothing else. Big Smile [:D]

Those are great sketches, I remember a camping trip when I was about 10, we went to Harvey's in Nevada where they had a huge car museum and on the way home stopped to watch air tankers on a fire, a B-24 from my faded memory but who knows, in the mid to late seventies it could have been almost anything.

That Tigercat should be nice I've only seen one picture of one as an air tanker but its a great looking plane, I've got a 1/72 one in the mail thats going to get the same treatment, along with an Avenger. If you are so inclined Canada just recently stopped using them as tankers so there are many pics here

I also have a question for those who like Krylon Fusion, it made a complete mess, it leaked paint all over the can, the ground, my foot. Is that typical? The paint job was ok, but I wasn't that impressed with the stuff and I like regular Krylon. I was using white if it matters. I wouldn't try it again if I didn't have a can of Forest Green and Red sitting around. Bad luck or is that common?

I thought I would at least post a few before photos, although they are of poor quality. The final photos will be with a friend's camera and much more clear.
The first is the kit and the tank to make a Firecat, all I have to wait for now are the decals.


These sketches were made by my father in 1971 at the Placerville, California airport while they were being serviced to fight a fire. We sat for hours watching them, and for a twelve year old like me, I couldn't have been happier!
These are three sketches, one of the Tigercat, one of the Catalina and of the Avenger.

This is the Avenger and the final sketch he would have made the painting from, but he never did. Dang!

Of coarse now I see that. I did one out of sheet styrene. Cut out the circles and then used a rectangle piece wrapped around an exacto handle to get the cylinder shape. It's not extremely pretty , but since it will be up under the rear of the truck, it should be good enough. Also put on the ladder racks. These were a pain to do. Once again not real pretty , but the ladders will be pretty much covering them up. Heres the pics.





Stared on the hard suction racks today. Have on assembled and hopefully will have the other one done tonite. The second one is a bit more challenging due to haveing to be set off the side of the truck more than the top one.
