Welcome To The 80s Group Build
Posted by 68GT on Friday, March 26, 2021 8:41 PM

The goal is to build a model of anything that existed in 1980s and how it appeared (or would have) in the 80s.  We are talking load outs, fitments, modifications, paint schemes, graphics...etc.  Anything goes from figures to space craft.

Rules

-Start Date: 6/1/2021

-End Date: 6/1/2022

-Crossovers are allowed.

-Can be a box kit or scratch built.

-Subject can be started, but within reason.

-Some progress photos are necessary.

-Have fun!

Military vehicles - must be as it appeared in use or as an abandoned derelict.

Civilian vehicles - must be as they appeared as new vehicles or older vehicles with 80s type mods done to them.

Media subjects - would be from 80s movies, TV shows or even comics.

Space - I understand could be kind of limited but don't forget the SiFi subjects.

I've tried to cover everything but I could have missed something.

I have a bunch of stuff to build from the 80s so I'd better figure where I'm going to start first.

Purcilla says I'm in with 1/12 Tamiya YZR500 - Kenny Roberts 1980 world champion.  I'll commit to the bike, may do Kenny as he comes with the kit.

Thanks,

John

Always loved the look of these kits in the Tamiya pamphlets that came with the kits. Unfortunately in the 80s I only built their armor.

I was messing with an old Keaton Batmobile, and picked up a new one from Hobby Lobby. I think I might join this one with the new Batmobile.

Yes, I have two different Keaton Batmobiles and will build one of them. The second one comes with the removable engine that the Penguin pulled when he booby trapped it in the second movie. The other one is the standard 1989 version.

I've got this big scale Pontiac Firebird that i've had in storage for a decade. The Body has a big crack across the very weak roof. It looks to have been repaired on the a pillar as well. It looks like the only other casualty was a torsion roll bar is broken. The rest of the kit appears to be there, just very dusty.

I've made a start on the Firebird project

step one is some clean up of the large amounts of sag on most of the body panels. I've also started the engine build. yes that's a 1/24 scale Morris mini. i spray painted the transmission in tamiya silver leaf.

My Brother In-law had one of these that was all black. The wheels had the silver finish on the rims with black centers instead of the gold.

I'm still vacillating on my choice.

One of these:

Star Trek TNG cricket phaser. Garage resin kit:

The original R2-D2, but it qualifies (I think) because R2 was in the 2 '80s Star Wars movies:

The car I drove in '80s, while listening to New Wave music:

The oldest kit I have, The Welsh models Shorts 330 I started to convert to a C-23 back in 1988:

I'm open to help deciding....

Why not build them all?  I'm adding these two to my list.

I plan on doing 2 builds for a year long GB. I have done 3 in the past, but with GAF's X-files GB coming up I don't want to commit to too much.

I'm leaning towards starting with the cricket, but electronics are not my strong point.

The C-23 could bog down looking for decals.

I'm also looking to add an '80s Indycar, but I'm having trouble finding one from the 80s.

With growing up near Raceway Park in Englishtown I was always down there. My favorites were the Pro Stock and Super Stock classes.

I still cant beleive they shut down the drag strip.  Said the insurance was too much but they still do motorcross, BMX, gocart racing, a road course and drifting.  Confused

This is not my entry, but an actual kit I built in 1984. It was still in the original box along with the sale receipt dated July 28, 1984. I would have built it before I headed back to college in September.

Rob Gronovius

As I was digging through my stash of old Batmobile kits, I stumbled upon this old build. It was completed and in the original box. A few pieces had come loose, the radar dish and top laser gun. The landing gear were loose in the box and half of one of the rear gear was broken and missing. Nothing that will prevent it from being displayed once I have room for it.

Not a great build, but quite the snapshot into my building skills at age 20.

The sales receipt was still in the box dated July 28, 1984 so this would have been built shortly afterwards. The price of the kit was $5, it was on clearance and I purchased several of the Return of the Jedi snap kits for $1 each (TIE Interceptor, X-Wing).

I think I can manage a model in a year, and I've been looking for an excuse to build this one:

80's show and 80's model! Ha ha!

I have a kit similar to that, but after a quick trip to Hobby Lobby, I found a Tom Cat, not any Tomcat, but Tom "Maverick" Cruise's F-14 from the movie Top Gun.

I think I might build that 1980s movie kit instead of the Keaton Batmobile (which I am still building). The old AMT/Ertl Batmobile is still a rather rough kit and will need more time to be brought up to standards.

The Top Gun Tomcat was only around $11 after their 40% off sale.

Rob, I'm really envious of the Millenium Falcon!  About the same time you were building that I built the X-wing fighter, and I wish I still had it - happy memories.

Vell, Zaphod's just zis guy, you know?

While it is not my oldest built model kit, finding a model that I made 37 years ago, and still in near mint condition is amazing. It is a snapshot into my modeling skills in 1984.

GT, this hi-vis or lo-vis scheme? I was thinking about doing the hi-vis scheme, from the Final Countdown, but I like the VA-82 Scheme from the movie as well (and I actually have the decals for that!)...
