I've had some sprue bags disintegrate like that before. But they were exposed daily to sunlight for many months, if not a few years, thru a window, so I figured that was what had caused them to break down. Being in a sealed box takes away that aspect...

Insufficient data Mr G. As the external shrink wrap and box were intact and undamaged, it is not logical to assume that Romulans attacked. A more plausible theory would be that Harry Mudd beamed a colony of Tribbles into the box where they wreaked havoc until they departed, presumably in the same way they arrived...
Real G Are the plastic bag pieces brittle? If so, daaaaaang, it's the Romulans crossing the neutral zone again. They are using their cloaked ships equipped with plasma torpedoes to destroy Federation outposts. And model kits apparently.

That's wild. Perhaps it got dried out over time and just decomposed.

So I get a 40+ year old kit off ebay, still in shrink wrap. But it sounds very weird, like a box of loose parts. I suspect it has been re-shrink-wrapped so I open it up (was going to anyway). Yep, there are all the parts loose in the box; but wait...the inner parts bag is in hundreds of pieces. I mean, it looks like someone dunked in liquid nitrogen then hit it with a hammer. Looks more like shattered glass that a plastic bag. Instructions sheet looks never opened and decal sheet looks like it was printed yesterday. So I guess it was the original shrink wrap Lots of parts fallen off the tree from years of being bounded around it looks like. No idea what made the inner bag explode...
