Proposed figure GB
Posted by Dodgy on Saturday, August 13, 2022 4:07 AM

Figures are a modelers nightmare for many people, but this does not have to be the case. They are no different than any other model subject, it's all about practice, skill development, techniques and patience. Wether you want to specialize in the genre, or just produce something to help dress up another model, figure modeling can be very rewarding. Figures are my favourite subject although I'm only an average figure modeler, but I'm much better at them than aircraft or cars, so I have entered some GB's related to those subjects in order to take me out of my comfort zone. The result? I have had my frustrations, but I've also had a lot of fun and excellent support from other modelers. I have learnt new techniques, refined some old skills and learnt about new products and how to use them.

So I'm putting out feelers for a figure GB in 2023. Wether you are an experienced figure modeler, or have never tried one, it dosen't matter. This is an opportunity to share and/or learn new skills in a subject that many modelers avoid, or feel that they are no good at.

The proposed start date is December 1st 2022, finish is 30th November 2023. There are no limits on scale, period, or genre. Fantasy, Sci Fi, historical what ever. Busts are also welcome. Crossovers are also good.

The main idea is to have fun with a subject that some may think is not fun at all.

I like figures! Count me in!

You know, just recently my wife asked, "How come you never add people to your airplanes?" I honestly didn't have a really good answer. As I thought about it, I realized that I never really attempted any figures beyond the (very) few pilots I've added to my cockpits. Why haven't I? I guess I'm one of those I'm-No-Good-At-Figures guys.

Well, since my conversation with my wife, I have decided I should try a figure or two.  I think I'll start small, in my preferred scale of 1/48. Maybe a small vignette.

So, count me in. I figure (See what I did there?) this GB will be a good place to give my first plastic humans a try.

Ok folks, that's seven of us, (dare I say the magnificent seven),........ maybe not. But with 7 starters I'm going to call this a go, so will set the GB post up in the morning. If you can let me know what you are going to enter I'll get the roster happening. If you're not sure, I'll just list your name with TBD.

Thanks fella's it's going to be fun. Don't know if we can out do Bakster on the banter, but we'll give it a shake. I'm going to call the GB 'Go Figure'.

Hi Dodgy,

I'll have a go at this; finished my first figure recently leaving a lot to be desired, approaching figures as a bit of fun in a new direction. Bought some more figures recently so this is very timely now to decide on which, will let you know.

Thanks! I thought it was pretty good too and then got destroyed at our IPMS show last weekend...

That's awesome John, I love that figure- looking forward to seeing him painted up.

Dunno what I'll enter. I picked this up about three years ago and got really frustrated on cleaning up the seams and having to figure out some way to replace the scales where I sanded them out. I really need to back to it- only painting done is some primer on the seams.

And I picked up a pile of 90mm or so figures from AliExpress a few months ago. They're great figures and pretty cheap running from fifteen to twenty US bucks. Here's a few that I'd assembled, this gives me an excuse to get some of them painted.

OK I'll throw in as well.  I also have a bunch of figures across a wide range of genres, from WW I aces to anime characters.

I don't build a lot of figures.  But when I do, I have fun:

Yep Gamera, I think the GB theme is a great chance to stretch those model skillsets.  Judge Banana really speak to me (but it's all gibberish, so I have NO idea what he's saying).

On the anime side, I have been steadily collecting those Plamax figures, mostly the Macross characters.  I'd like to finish them in the "cel-shaded" technique that emulates animated 2-D art.  Never tried it, but I have seen on-line builds that look fantastic.

Also, for those who love old comics/horror, X-Plus from Japan is going to release a 1/8 scale injection plastic figure of Vampirella.  When I saw the product photos I assumed it was being done by Moebius or Polar Lights due to the subject and scale:

Vampirella Jose Gonzalez Edition (Plastic model) - HobbySearch Gundam Kit/etc. Store (1999.co.jp)

Perhaps a liitle risque for the forum, but the kit is based off of a well known iconic illustration.

Sorry, my mistake - not literally destroyed but after I set the figure down on the table a dozen or so people showed up with much better figures. I had hoped I'd get at least a third place and didn't place anywhere. Oh well, I'm happy with it in any case....
