Weekend Madness GB 2023- still going!
Posted by GMorrison on Monday, October 30, 2023 3:29 PM

It's that time of year again!

What's that you say?

Why simply, it's WEEKEND MADNESS GB time of course!  What is that you ask?  Why it's simply the rootenest, tootenest group build to ever grace these webpages.  Legends will be made, songs of victory will be sung, and mortals will become modelling gods.  Well golly, what do I have to do, you ask.  Well, I'm glad you asked.  First I want you to pick a model, any model will do.  Then, I want your time.  Oh great, you say.  But wait, I say, I don't want six months or a year I want 48 hours.  Wait a minute you say, 48 hours?  Yep, only 48 hours.  That's the goal, 48 hours from start to finish. But, you start to sputter. No buts says I, if I can do it, you can do it.  Many have sung songs of victory, and many have sung mournful dirges of defeat.  Will you join this quest?"

The start date is November 23.  But that's Thanksgiving day you say.  It's also the start of a four day weekend for us here in the States, and for the rest of the world it's as good a day as any to start.  Besides, it's tradition. This build normally peters out around New Years.

Here's the link to the 2022 GB:

https://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/191412.aspx

We had a strong turn-out and everybody (except me) wrapped up a great build. At this point it's my pleasure to be the scribe while the true builders work away.

The Rules.

1. Pick a kit.  Normally I'd recommend a simple kit, something you can finish in the allotted time.  However, there are some that like to burn the thing to the ground and pick the latest million piece wonder.  However, most of us like to watch the world burn as well and will gladly pull up a chair, pop some popcorn, and watch your attempt and root you on to either a  spectacular victory or a spectacular defeat.

2.  ALL kits will be unstarted.  Photographic proof is required.  A pic of the unstarted kit with either a working clock in the background or a timestamp is required.  Crossovers are allowed.

3.  You have 48 hours, that's it.  You start at 8:00pm on Friday, you have until 8:00pm on Sunday to finish.  I realize that some don't get the traditional weekend off, so pick a 48 hour window and go for it.

4.  Take pics.  It gives the rest of us something to look at while we're waiting for our masterpieces to dry.

5.  HAVE FUN!  This is not the build for building your latest contest entry, although some have gone on to win, place, or show at their local contest.  This is for blowing out the cobwebs and finishing something.

6.  Did I mention you only have 48 hours?

7.  Did I mention have fun?

I think we've covered every genre in this build, so all are welcome.  If I've forgotten something slap me upside the back of the head and remind me.  If you have any questions, please ask.

"The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge cry "This one's for Buddy!".

Bill-thank you for running this GB again-it's one of the traditions I look forward to.

I'm in for at least one build-I'll pick something once I figure out what I'm going to do.

I haven't had much luck with group builds as I have not finished a model in many, many years.  This group build might be the ticket to finish one!

So, I bought this model a few years back for a '*** Cancer Awareness Group Build'.  Part of the model needed to be pink.  I never started the model or joined the group.

Today, I blew the dust off and took some photos, I'll get the 'Black Friday' paper tomorrow for the date stamp photo.

SigEp Ziggy would like to join in and build the Lindberg 1967 Olds 442

Ziggy

Good choice, Dave.  I don't know anything about that ship or model and look forward to your build.

Welcome, Ziggy! LOL that beast. This'll be cool!

I have an idea for my build, need to find it. Plan to start Saturday morning

I hadn't opened the kit until today!  Great deal of detailed parts, may have to get a spare kit for a diorama later.

Off to a great start, at least for me.

Didn't quite get to painting.

Ziggy

I just might pull this off!  First time with my airbrush, so petty far from perfect, but I would normally take a year and not finish, this is just what I needed.

Sprayed with semi-gloss to make it look right.

Ziggy

Calling this one finished. Simple kit as far as parts count goes. Fit was OK at best, except for the canopy. Being we only had 2 days to build, I didnt have the time to make sure the canopy was a clean installation. So its a bit rough. Far from my best work but this weekend group build is a grind. Enjoyed it.

Doug-your P-40 looks like it took much longer than 48hrs-good job! What brand/types of paint did you use and did you gloss coat before decaling?  I'm trying to put together a 48 hr. timeline for a 1/48 plane and whatever you did worked well.

Ziggy-enjoying watching your 442 come together-a lot of subassemblies to be dealt with. Good idea to tone down the chrome with semi gloss-looks more realistic.
