phroosh,

I don't know if it will help your research at all, but I found the following picture of a 13 SQN Hudson stuck in the mud in 1941.

I also found out that the squadron serial was changed from N to SF in 1943, which was also when the squadron began to replace their Hudsons with Lockheed Venturas

The other thing that I found out about 13 SQN that I didn't know was former PM Gough Whitlam served as a navigator-bombaimer rising to flight lieutenant with 13 Squadron Ventura PV1's.

Cheers

Well, the Spitfire Mk.VIII is moving along at a reasonable clip.

The cockpit is done and the airframe is now sealed with the wings attached. Next will be the tail area and then a heavy dose of pre-shading.

I was going to post a couple of progress shots but unfortunately the few photos of the interior that I took were all out of focus when I down loaded then to the PC (still working on the old close-up digital camera skills).

Oh well, stuff happens.

Cheers

Looks pretty darn good to me Thumbs Up [tup]. I'm really going to have to extract the digit now to catch up.

Tell me, what color did you use to pre-shade and how much filler did you have to use in the wing roots and gull wing?

Cheers

Darren i used plain ol Tamiya flat black for the preshade and painted Testors polyscale acrylic Earth brown FS.....ummm whatever over the top,i tried to lighten the brown with about 10% Tamiya flat white but it would't mix, kinda just floated around in tiny little globulates......
As for the wing roots i had to use some filler on the trailing edge half of the wings but the leading edge half of the wing sat snug as.......
Incidentaly i am in the process of making the Tamiya Spit MK1 Battle of Britain Flown by Aussie ace Paterson Hughes of 257 SQD i think and i had to use filler on the wingroots of that one to....
I also have the ICM Spit MKV111 which has great detail including the wing cannons and Merlin and that sucker needed filling in the wingroots tooDisapprove [V]
BTW thats the only part of the Hasegawa model that i needed to use filler on.....
Cheers J.S.......

Hey all, just some pics of how the Sabre is going. Anyone with the resin kit will gain the most from this.
This was a week ago, been a little busy, but all seems to be on schedule.
Fingers crossed!

The grey areas are covered with Tamiya putty, which bonded well to the resin.
The black texta shows the areas I had to sand out ALOT to make the kit pieces fit properly.

After nose alteration.
I also added strip styrene and putty inside the intake to smooth it out and make it look like an intake!

This shows the section that has to be removed to allow the resin part to fit, and also makes the air intake larger so the resin nose cone can fit (sorta!!)

Hopefully this weekend, the 2 halves will be assembled, and the hellish fitting of the lower wing ass'y will beginDisapprove [V]

Thanks Darren, that info on the changing of the serials is great, as my Dad was seriously wounded on the 3rd of March 1943, ending his service. I didn't know the timeframe of the serial change. It is quite possible that they were carrying the SF on the rear fuselage as the Ventura is in the second picture by then.

Every little bit of info helps, thanks a bunch

Mate, the flash or panel question is still going on!!!Sad [:(]
Wait till you have the halves together, and try to figure out how much to remove for the wheel wellWink [;)]

And the word 'vague' doesn't even begin to explain the instructions. My personal favourite is the photo's.
So well defined aren't theyTongue [:P]

Someone should tell them how to turn the toner down on the photocopier.

Just a couple of progress pics, showing the cockpit so far.
There are a few tings I need to fix, like the bezels around the instruments, and a seat cushion and belts, but so far so good.

I have to admit the Academy instrument panel didn't impress me much, but after some work, it looks ok, not great, but ok will do for now.

That said, for the next Sabre I do, I will definately get the Aires and Eduard kits to suit, the factory stuff really isn't up to scratch.

Hi all

My first foray into the world of airliner modelling. I have chosen the 737-300 kit after winning the Virgin Blue "reverse livery" decals off ebay. Produced by Hawkeye, they look nice on the sheet. Let's hope they perform ok!

Virgin Blue 737's are generally all over red with a white and blue tail and logo. However, this ex ANSETT ship was never repainted and after a red nose was added to replace the original nose damaged by a bird strike looked even stranger! Livery was all over white with a red/blue tail and the Virgin logo. Pretty interesting scheme which I hope to compliment with a 1:144 Revell 737-800 done out in the all red VB livery.

Pic shows the fuselage and engine nacelles with the white on and the primer coat on the wings and horizontal stabs.

not much to see really at this stage but here it is anyway

more pics to come

cheers

Mike

The TD item is pretty cool, but the Aires item I liked the look of a little more.

As for the c/pit colour, it's actually Gunze RLM 65 Light Blue!Wink [;)]

I tried the grey, and it didnt seem to look right with the research pics I have found.
Black didn't seem right to me, seeing as all the instruments and control knobs were black mostly, it would have been hell to see.

The blue actually looks close to spot on.

As for the wheel wells, a few people have said it is green, zinc chromate to be precise.

RLM 65 for the c/pit eh,cosidering the amount of research you've put in to this i'll trust in your judgement and paint the same colour,RLM 65 is a colour i have plenty of...
zinc chromate is that like the colour in A6M Zero wheel wells.....
hey i hope you don't mind me saving your pics for future reference....J.S

The main reason I went for the RLM 65 was for scale effect.
I mixed 10% white white with the grey, and checked it against the RLM, and it was nearly spot on. Saves mixing. And I'm lazy at heart!!Tongue [:P]

As for the green, I intend to use Model Masters 1734, Green Zinc Chromate.
This is the enamel one, same as I used on an earlier P 38.

The inside of the wheel bay doors is the same as the outer skin, BMF.

Mike, I like the look of your project, can't wait to see more pics!

Havn't done much to the spitfire lately, only put a coat of gloss over the Brown so now i'm back to where i started from before the mask pulled all the paint off.....

Finally I have some progress to report on the Spitfire and a couple pictures to post. After a bit of mucking around it's sealed up, masked, seam filled, sanded and now pre-shaded.

I used MM RLM 66 as the pre-shade color as a bit of an experiment after I read an article on someone doing the same thing (can't hurt anyway).

J.S, if you are having trouble getting hold of MM Zinc Chromate, drop me a line and I'll pick some up and mail it up to you.

Also, if these pics are too big or take too long to load etc, etc, let me know and I'll make them smaller next time.

Cheers

Progress report on the Mosquito and A-20, pictures to follow as soon as I can show an improvement.

I have finished the decals on the Mosquito thanks to David Edwards and am about to give it another coat of clear varnish prior to weathering.

The A-20 is just waiting a coat of 'One Go' prior to putting on the decals.

I am very slowly assembling the 1/48 Liberator. And I mean VERY slowly.

Avon Sabres
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 2, 2004 9:21 PM
Hi Folks,

I see a few Avon Sabres on the go, very nice.

I can recall black cockpits on the prototype A94-101 and also the early Mk30s. The primer grey for the rest is quite pale, well captured. The very front of the cockpit floor and side console walls is also black, tricky to paint. Can email pics if they're of interest.

All the Avon Sabres I've seen (6 or so) have silver lacquer wheel wells, same as the rest of the airframe. There are some good detail shots of the Classic Jets Fighter Museum Sword on their site and at ARC.

Cheers,

David

Darson your spit looks just like mine cept the colour of the preshade right down to the blue tac in the wheel wellsLaugh [(-D]LOL....
I went for the black preshade cause of the dark colour scheme on my model....
From memory( which is not that good ) your'e scheme is Green/Grey so RLM 66 is a good choice for it.....
I'd Better get a move along on mine,i want it finished in a couple of weeks before i start the British and Commonwealth Armoured GB....

David thanks for your input mate, seems to me that the Sabres in RAAF service were quite varied which can make it difficult to get an accurate picture of what to build and in what colour.....
BTW if you have pics by all means post em up,there's a couple of us here with Sabre feverSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Sabre fever huh.......gee j.s., I have no idea what you meanTongue [:P]
Mind you, what you call fever, my wife calls addiction!!
She is just so understanding of my personal needs. (not!!)

Anyway, Im planning on going with Alclad II White Aluminium BMF (yeah, I ordered some...), and MM Chromate Green wells, this seems to have turned up alot more in my research than anything else.

G'day everyone,

Heres my entry for the Aussie Group build all finished. It is a Beaufighter Mk.XXI from 93 squradron. It is A8-116 'Babs'. It was built from the Tamiya kit with an Aires cockpit and Aussie decals.

I've gottas say thanks to Lobbie for all the info he sent my way as well as the resin exhaust pipes and pilots seat.

Thanks for having a look and I'll see you all for the Aussie GB round 2.

By the way... some of the other projects I've seen in here look great. I'm interested to see how they turn out. Just goes to show we Aussies can match it with the rest of the world (don't know about me though, but I'm still learning).

see you all later...
