Budget Group Build Challenge

Budget Group Build Challenge

Here’s an idea for a group build inspired by forum posts about what can be the high cost of building model kits and those reality home improvement/remodel shows. Pretend you are going to build your very first model kit. You don’t have the kit or any tools, supplies, glue, paint etc. Now lets say you have a limited budget, let’s say $25 for everything, what could you build?

Here are a few ground rules.

1. Take the challenge seriously. Build the very best model you can while still staying within the $25 budget.

2. Don’t cheat. While no one will be looking over your back don’t be tempted to fire up the compressor and break out the Badger 450 airbrush.

3. Before the build starts everyone that participates is required to list what they’re building, and the cost of each item used in the build and we’re it was purchased. If you mail order a kit, accessory, supply etc. the postage must be included. You don’t need to run out and buy all new items but any thing that you have in stock and use must be included in your budget.

4. Common household items do not have to be included in the budget. Fingernail filing boards, masking tape etc do not need to be listed in the budget, and no, an air compressor and Badger 450 are not really everyday household item

5. Time frame. I know there is a lot of group build going so I’m opened to suggestions on the time frame.

6. When you’re done building your kit post a picture of your completed model. (If you can’t post pics email me and well work something out)

7. Subject matter is not important, build what you like but stay in the budget.

So how about it? Any takers? Any more rules needed? I think it could be a fun experience. Are you up for the challenge?

Here's a list of people in the build to this point. Sorry I'm a little late with this, please let me if I need to make any changes.

Hmm...a throwback to the good 'ol days? A pocket knife and the tree in the back yard? Could even splurge on the bottle of wood glue.

Sounds like an interesting idea for a build.

I don't know.

Let's see:
$2.50 - MM Flat Black - needed on just about everything
$2.50 - MM Flat White - for details and to lighten other colors
$2.50 - One other color (TBD)
$3.25 - 1 Spray bomb of any base color
$1.20 - Tube Glue (although, I refuse to make spiderwebs with tube glue again!)
$2.75 - Brush
$1.20 - Small bottle of thinner, doubles as brush cleaner

$15.90 so far, and haven't even mentioned a kit yet.

I think I'll have to pass on this one.

Good Luck and enjoy modeling,

Robert Foster

I have a question, Is the kit supposed to be the first kit we ever built?

either way I am still intersted. Looking at some my first models is funny, they are before i discove CA glue.

i may be interested in this one, i got a revell P47 for £1 (about $1.80ish at a guess) would discount kits like this be allowed or should we use the normal retail price. plus $25 is about £14 ish isn't it. great idea btw. the only thing that will stop me getting involved is getting my other g.bs finished in time.

Kits can be discounts, close outs, garage/yard/sidewalk sale/flea market finds, second hand store, LHS sale table, mail order (including postage), Walmart etc. My kit will probably come form either a garage sale or Goodwill (second hand) store. Just be honest about what you paid and list where it came.

It's part of the challenge, your going have to buy and "think out of the box." I just know that there can be some great builds on this budget.

As long as the date is fair for me, I can get in with, what i would like to build, a 1/72 Italeri M4 Sherman. Wich was also my first kit. So far it has been one of my favorites.

lets see,
kit- about $10.00 + shippingDead [xx(]
spray can of OD- about $5.00
and a bottle of dullcoat- ?

I'll probably be in on this.

My last build was a Monogram 1/48 B-25.
Kit - $8.99 from Hobby Lobby 1/2 price sale.
Paint - $1.89 can of Krylon Olive Drab
$1.89 can of light grey primer
Hobby Lobby "Americana" acrylics (IMHO better than MM) .58 cents each on sale, needed soft white, safety yellow, safety red, grey, and aluminum. Came to $2.90.
Bottle of Amboid liquid glue - $3.39
$19.06 + $1.55 for tax = $20.58

Some other items I already had - Tube of Spot Putty from Walmart automotive section, a roll of masking tape, and a bottle of Future all coming to about $8.

We got hit with some huge med bills and taxes this year plus a cut in pay, so I'm back to living like a kid again and found this can be done, and is quite fun.

Count me in...especially since I want to build something else, and was looking at around 10-12 bucks...Oh, by the way, since I buy all my stuff on base (no sales tax) is that OK?

BTW, I paid $3.00 for my first airbrush at a yard sale. One of those that takes the propellant for about $6. My father in law worked at a dump and brought home another Badger 150 that was a little rusted, so I cleaned it up and I use it the most. So I think you can airbrush on a tight budget.

Hmmm...Since we do not have a sales tax (but every other tax known to mankindAngry [:(!]) here in Oregon you do not have to include it in your budget.

Looks like there is some interest in the challenge.

I will get my list put together by next week. I have decided to build the Corning Corvette as my kit and just need to put my supplies, tools and accessories together.

What kind of time frame do those interested want work in?

Maybe someone more computer literate then I can design us a Group Build logo/badge/flag for our post, any help out there?

I am going to join for sure, but if i cant oder the M4 I'll have to look for something else.
Also, I painted figures before my first model, i know that i had A set of testors military colors, steel, silver, red, and gold. So i had the paint for the details. I aslo had a testors hobby knife and assorted paint brushes. no sanding sticks thoughSad [:(]. so do I have to include these items in my budget?

If yes... then I will probably not paint with the testors, if no.....I will paint wit the the testors. It really makes no difference to me.

aw hell, i forgot about sanding stuff. i have some sandpaper of various grades that i use on cars (real ones that is). i'll also stick to just using one brush though god only knows how because i also need some filler. i will have to sort that out price wise. probably will drop the gunmettal from my paint list too because i can mix that from the others on my list.
off to do some re-calculating

There is a forum for figures here at FSM so I think I have to disqualify your paints, sorry Rebelreenactor. Remember only common household items count as freebees.

Yep gregers looks like you might have to sacrifice something to get under budget.

This is going to be tougher then I thought. It’s been a little slow at the shop today so I’ve started working on my list; I have had to cut some items I really wanted to use, like my super glue.

i have scrubbed the gun mettal paint and one brush from my list, going to price up some "green stuff". if this will send me over budget i can use some kids modeling clay called plastercene that the kids don't need anymore (at least thats my excuse for pinching it from them LoL) and seal it with gloss paint (either the red or green). i will be using the white as a primer to check that everything is smooth then the black to undercoat the silver on some panels.

I posted the following because when I read the article, I thought about this group build. Perhaps it'll be inspirational in that this guy built this diorama practically out of nothing but common materials. Check it out.

Very nice build and a perfect example of the spirit of this challenge! Hope it will inspire more builders to join the BGBC (Budget Group Build Challenge).

It’s also food for thought. Alternate building materials, I have been scrambling trying to fit the cost of the kit and supplies into the budget, this should help with ideas on how to stretch our dollars.

Alright, so ill exclude the paint. What about using my sisters paint brushes, she is sort of an artists with oils, here brushes were the ones i first used, secretly.

About sanding sticks and paper, my mom has nail files, and we have, always, alot of sand paper in our shop, so does that count as a household item. let me know. either way, im still in. This is going to be sooooooooooooo much fun. Just to see how much of a difference the tools make, or skill level.

Do we have a start date yet?

Can we use "liberated items" from the workplace? Since this is not only a challenge in budgetary management, shouldn't we be able to use our resourcefulness in other ways? I'm not talking about heavy duty stuff like air guns, etc... but little bits of wire, etc... for detailing, maybe?
