I am really looking forward to this build/challenge, or at least I was before I started to read the post from the MTD build....no just kidding, I’m still really looking forward to it. I’m already planning strategy in my head and I haven’t even seen the kit yet and the starts still a couple months away.

Since I’m on the west coast of the United States I will be one of last one to start, this will either be good or bad, don’t know, we’ll see. Haven’t figured out which gloss coat I will be able to use if any, future wouldn’t cure in time.

It’s going to be a blast…just like the one the MTD builders are having. Big Smile [:D]

My wife's first ever model was Eduard's Fokker Dr.1 and she managed all right. The kit is nice and easy to put together. Don't go for the profipack as it brings more troubles than benefit though.

However, Revell's is the latest out and that's the one I'll be building. The critics have been very good about this lil' one. But if you go Revell, make sure you get the one shown at the top. The older kit can still be found (swap meet and the like) and it's not that easy nor as good.

Got my kit today and all I can say is that’s one lil’ airplane. It is the Revell kit. I was having a hard time visualizing just how small it would be; now I know. It’s been awhile since I built a 1/72 aircraft. The lighted magnifier will be getting a work out on October 17th.

Domi: i got it for about 250 Philippine Pesos, Which translates to a little less than $5 USD. Not bad at all. I guess it's because my LHS owner orders her stuff from Hannats, and gets a bulk discount . I was tempted by the Fokker D VII, but when i took a peek inside, the wings and fuselage were covered in injector pin marks... Yuck!

a ww1 plane for awhile... the only problem is the Sunday date,
so i won't b able 2 join in the Mad Day madness, but mite just
look 4 the revell kit & build it at my usual 'snail in molasses' pace.
but thanx 4 the info & inspiration, as usual...
any suggestions re: 1/72 SPAD or Sopwith Camel as a companion piece ?
what did Nungesser fly ? probably a Nieuport or SPAD...

Rafael and Gsharp: welcome aboard!

Rafael, we'll be starting around the same time since we are on the same time zone!

Gsharp, Eduard's F.1 is fine by me, as it is definitely an early Dr.1. Be aware though that the F.1 had a top wing and the horizontal stabiliser that had different shapes from the 'production' Dr.1 that followed. I can e-mail you some drawings showing you what needs to be done as I'm pretty sure the Eduard kit doers not come with those modifications. It's not a hard conversion though and with superglue, I feel it can still be done in a day!

Frosty, Well we can give you another full day if that makes it easier for you. I realise some people have other more important things to do on their Sundays! I'd love to see you joining this! As to Nungesser, he is best known for his Nieuport 17, all silver with the skull and coffin insigna.. Brrr! A cold customer, this Nungesser!

HR Models have (had) one Nieuport 17 but Hannants' website says it's discontinued...

You could try a Nieuport 11 'Bébé' ; Toko have one beautiful 1/72 model of this bird, with Tsarist Russian markings. Hobbycraft of Canada have a 1/28 model of the Bébé too!

Nungesser aso flew the SPAD XIII (camouflaged with the same insigna). The SPADs are much more difficult aircraft to model because of the many strings that come with them! My advice would be to start with the Fokker Dr.1, then pass on to a Nieuport 11 to hone in your skills then go for the SPAD XIII. After that, you'll be ready for the Ilya Murometz four-engined biplaneTsarist bomber... Smile [:)]

Ok, I'll do it too, have been here a few times and somehow every time I misread the date, actually thought it was already over.
In fact if my memory serves me right, the Fokker Dr1 from Revell (or it may have been Airfix) was my first kit ever, this will surely be a trip into the past for me.

One question though, the title says Mad Fokker Day, not Mad Fokker Dr1 Day, does this mean, other Fokkers are welcome too, if so, I would considder building a few different ones simultaniously, if allowed... Big Smile [:D]

Dan, first of all welcome in this mad enterprise! Well, this first ever Mad Fokker Day will be for the Dr.1 but I can not stop you from building another or several other kits! I chose the Dr.1 because of its rather simple design (in terms of scale modeling) and the amount of easy color schemes it affords, since we only have 24 hrs to complete the project. Also, the Dr.1 is easy to find in kit, and cheap.

Kempf's Dr.1 was awesome I think! If you have the Squadron Signal book, there are 3 pics of two of his Dr.1s. The first one has the left part of the horizontal stabilizer white, white 'K' on the fuselage, 1917 style national insignas and a streaky camouflage that appears, on the wings, to run perpendicular to the axis of those wings; the second one, probably a later machine, has the white part of the stabilizer on the right side, oblique streaky camouflage, fat and straght German crosses, dark (black?) fuselage 'K' and the white vertical stabilizer has a black outline; the back of the fuselage of this later airplane (or later two picture in any case) appears to be of a lighter, plain colour too...

Eduard's Kemppf Dr.1, if that's the one you're going for, is definitely the earlier aircraft.

Well worth thinking about is this PE set marketed by Tom Modelworks to detail/replace the plastic machine guns of the kits (Eduards's profipack Dr.1 has some PE for the guns too):

The above set retails at $4.50, and can be used for other WWI aircraft too.

Each of the two Dr.1 guns can thus be replaced altogether by two superb little kits on their own. However, it's in the cooling 'mesh' around the gun itself that those PE sets make a real difference with the plastic bits...

w/ his candlesticks, coffin & skull & crossbones insignia... & indy is credited w/
giving the baron the idea 2 paint his plane red, LOL !
so if i can find that revell kit, i'm going 2 try & build it !

i am not sure my gf is ready for that kind of modeling!! [:0]
and probably too ticklish for brush painting! Tongue [:P]

i think i am going to order Blue Rider's for Jasta 2,
which has the Kempf markings & square crosses (i think).
naturally the decals cost more than the plane!
and if i go for the guns, i will have tripled the cost of the project!
but the total will still be at or under $20 US . . .

but the guns may be a bit ambitious for someone like me.
short time frame, and my PE experience is limited to 1/32 Aircraft & 1/35 armor.

here is a pic i found for square cross bird, but i think these stripes are oblique.

Ok, I just got one Dr1 today in Antwerp, I was going to get the Eduard Profipack ; guess what, right out of stock.

But... I've found the Striptea...euh, Strip down model from the same manufacterer.
I think I won't be making this one for the Mad Fokker Day though (I just can't wait that long Big Smile [:D]

).
The reason I tell you this, is that you actually get two kits in this "box" ; the PE parts, and a complete plastic kit, from which you only need a few little parts.
What I'm going to do, is this, I'm going to get the cheap Revell, and use only the parts that I will mis in the Eduard kit (which is offcourse very nicely detailed).

The Revell-parts that I will use are :

- landinggear
- prop
- struts
and engine
all the rest will be Eduard... Big Smile [:D]

Oh, and yes, the thought had crossed my mind of making the V3 prototype, that would have eleminated the need for interwing struts, but that plane is so unknown that you guys would have probably thought that I forgot those useless struts.
Yes, the struts on the Fokker Dr1 were useless, Fokker just added them because pilots didn't trust airplanes without them Smile [:)]

(Look who did his homework)

By the way, did somebody allready mention that this is a very small airplane ? Laugh [(-D]

Well, usually it takes about 3 to 4 weeks for me to put together a simple subject, such as an Albatros DV... To do a Dr.1 in 24hrs, even with the small amount of rigging work.... its a chalenge... Therefore mine will be OOB, all-red, no thrils...

Now I´m in the process of explanining to SWMBO (she, who must be obeyed) why I'm suppose to start modeling such a tiny little bug at midnight, instead of being in the bed sleeping.... She thinks I'm really going nuts this time....

Just a question: how do we know what kind of read to use if all the refference pictures of the time were black and white? I suppose any-old red will do... ? Tamiya only makes 2 or 3, so i'll have to be content with that. Big Smile [:D]

Hi Shrikes,

The good thing about WW1 modelling, is that if you are not sure about the tone of red to use, most probably neither all other people are!! The matter of colours is even today, a most subjective one, so by going back almost one century... I did the Roden Dr1 a few years ago (I would post a picture, if i found how to do it...), and then I used Tamyia acrylic flat red. And it looked good to me....

The easiest if you do not have a website of your own, is to download your pics onto Ron's site (there's a link on that thread). It's real easy. You need to fill in the two fields on the log-in page: type "newfsm" in the top one and "models" as the password, then go into the uploading gallery (there's a scroll down thingy at the top from where you can select the "add pictures" option).

latest report:
i have been searching 4 the new revell Dr.1 kit online &
in a couple of hobby shops w/ no success... Sad [:(]

i mite have 2 either do a special order thru my LHS
and they r really bad about special orders, so i'd rather not.
or else get the eduard kit, the kempf one most likely ...
but while i was looking 4 the Dr.1, i found something else:
a Nieuport 17c kit... it's packaged in a Testor's box,
but the bottom wing says Hawk on it.... it's a basic kit
& it's in 1/48 ( i promised Jeeves & kik36 i'd build a 1/48 plane, lol !)
but it will hopefully make a nice 'warm-up'...
now i just need 2 find decals 4 Nungesser's markings !

Frosty, there are some decals for 1/48 Ni-17:

Aeromaster have 2 sheets, regretably not with the famed Nungesser machine: Sad [:(]

Sheet 48504:

Sheet 48521:

Blue Rider have one with 2 French Ni-17 (+other birds): Sheet 48503 (haven't located a pic yet!), plus one for Italian Ni-17 (48504), Russian birds (48507), Belgian ones (48513 - probably the famed 'Comete' Squadron) and yet more Rssian ones (48524)...

Dutch Decals have a sheet with, surprisingly, two Dutch Nieuports..

Illiad have a very neat sheet for various Russian Ni-17;

thanx 4 the info on the Ni-17 decals !
too bad about the Nungesser markings, i was liking the kind of
Goth effect, LOL ...but some of those other birds look pretty neat too.
using a rattle can, i put a base coat of tamiya german grey on the 17,
& will spray some MM german silver over that this weekend, most likely.

This is the 1/72 Roden DR.1 representing August Raben machine of Jasta 18 as of Summer 1918. Decals are OOB, and quite good, which is surprising for Roden. Some of their decals simply desintegrate when soaked....
I've made this kit a few years ago, and as far as I can recall, it was a quite streightforward build, as most Roden kits are. Nevertheless, I remenber some pieces to be quite fragile to remove from sprues.

It is tiny....

I'm not sure. I know he flew a DVII with the same red decoration but with a black bird, while in Jasta 18.... I suppose it is possible he had flew a blue one. I´ve seen decals for the blue one, or at least something in my literature. I´ll check that and get back to you.

The Squadron Signal book shows in the colour profile Raben's Dr.1 (well, one of his), in white and blue with a white bird. I have to admit both blue abnd red versions look quite stunning!

Thats right, djmodels1999. I remembered when I saw decals and references for it... in my shelf.......... Oops [oops]

....

They came from Kagero book Fokker D.VII, from Tomasz Kowalski.... The decal sheet that comes with the book has the decals for a Fokker D.VII (OAW) machine red/white for August Raben, when he was commander of jasta 18 (this should have been quite late 1918).

Oh... and by the way... I recomend this and other Kagero books if you're interested in WW1, specialy "Kaiser Aces" and "Sopwith Camel" (larger books). This and Nieuport are smaller. (usual disclaimer: nothing to do with Kagero, blablabla...)

interesting 2 see the Nungesser plane w/ camo scheme...
and i found a back issue of FSM w/ a pic of an Ni-17 model
that shows the rigging pretty well...
i was able 2 spray the german silver onto my Ni-17,
and hand paint the V-struts, prop & machine guns...
so far, so good !
except that this is the fokker thread.... Wink [;)]

Not part of this GB, but thought I'd mention this. The September issue of Scale Aviation Modeller has a comparison build on both the Eduard & Revell Dr1s in 1/72.

I've just read it, and thought it might prove interesting for all those involved in this GB.

ok, i have decided 2 go w/ the eduard Dr.1 profipack,
since it comes w/ p/e & extra decals i can use on other projects...
i will probably end up spending the entire 24 hours trying 2 put
the machine guns together, LOL !
(ohmigosh, i was actually on topic 4 once !!!)
meanwhile, on the French front, i found a great article online about accurizing
the testors Ni-17 kit & now i have 2 decide if i will b incorporating a few of those trix in my model... information can b a dangerous thing ! Wink [;)]

Larry, you still have a bit of time to get more people joining in... I wonder what happened to the planned Mad T-34 Build..? But yes, you need to keep it going by adding little messages and the like.

Frosty, glad the postman is involved! I'm curious to have your views on that kit. I just bought the Eduard strip down Fokker E.III.... I'm trying to devise a way to make it with the experimental transparent cellon covering. I need to experiment with my trusty Ross's blue gel glue... I'm also wondering how to mask the markings, because of course, water-slide decals will not work over water-based glue...

Domi, i'm not sure what the cellon looks like, but if it's totally clear
maybe sandwich wrap, and if it's frosted, wax paper ?
i think they used the same stuff 4 clear panels in the upper wing of some Nieuports,
& it would b a cool effect if u can figure out how 2 do it !

Frosty, Sandwich wrap is an option, definitely. Not sure how this thing react to hobby glues though. Will have to experiment... I think the Ross glue or similar products such as Clearfix would work quite ok on the fuselage ant the fin, but I have to cover both sides of the wings and I think that's where I'm gonna run into problems because at one point or another the space between the two layers will be too thin and I'm gonna end up with a single, overly thick, layer of glue/clearfix. That's where the plastic wrap has the advantadge because the two layers will not stick to each other....

Ohoo! Happy Birthday, then, Dan..! I hope you are still in 'good shape' to take on this project after the party!

Well, first update, an hour and 34 minutes after the beginning of the day... The main parts are all off the sprues and have been cleaned up, the inside of the cockpit has received an airbrushed coat of a sandyish colour, the engine built and 'primed' in black, the wheels, engine cowling and ammunition box primed in white. I'll wait until after the fuselage is assembled and the two lower sets of wings are on before priming the aircraft in white or grey.

The kit is very nice (it's the new Revell kit), the parts really finely molded and detailed, but the red plastic is a major pain...

I'm off to bed for a short while.

An extra hour of work clocked in and I'm just about to close the fuselage. Just a touch of drybrushing needed on the seat. While my oil wash is drying, I've started a little plastic base for the future completed model.

So far so good. The kit is really excellent. I've only added the seat harness so far.

Will post more pics within a couple of hours.

Just past mid-day here. Less than twelve hours to go.. The wings are on, the undercarriage too. The seam at the top of the fuselage was dealt with - I used superglue to do the assembly and only had to file away the excess glue to obtain a smooth surface-. The seam at the bottom of the fuselage was left more or less as it was: after having passed on a coat of liquid glue along the seam, I only engraved some little lines all along to represent the sewing. It won't be seen anyway...

The tailplane and the fin are still off at this stage. Because of the decoration I chose, and the ridiculously small size of this kit, I think I'm gonna paint them separately.. They are overal black but part of the fuselage is black too, and masking could be difficult or even dangerous with all those flying surfaces...

Before I start painting, I'll add a touch of Milliput at some of the joints between the wings and the wing struts, and at the joint between the fairing of the undercarriage axle and the struts there.

Revell provides a little strenghtening bar for the undercarriage but this was a field modification and as far as I can see, Von Tutschek's Dr.1 (404/17) did not have it.

The base is painted. Just have to add the pilot's name.

8 hours and a half to go... The base 'blue' has been on for nearly an hour. It's enamel so it will be a little while before I can do more on the camouflage...

A very detailled book I have here states that the Dr.1 were painted a very light blue on the underside, while upper surfaces only had the green streaking added over the doped fabric. Indeed the doped fabric apparently showed through the pale blue... However, other sources state that the streaking was applied over light blue...

Well, I mixed some pale blue and a bit of sand to obtain a dirty looking light blue, which I applied overal. I think the streaking, which appears to be rather 'strong' in th case of Von Tutschek's machine, will cover most of the upper surfaces base colour.

I also painted the fin and tailplane in black; the fin will soon get its German crosses. The propeller is done too; I'll be adding the propeller logos next. The machine guns provided by Revell are just beautiful. I won't be using Tom's Modelworks cooling jackets after all... Plenty of other kits could benefit from them! Makes me think that I may buy more Revell Dr.1 just for those machine guns!!

I'm up and at it again. Started back in at 7:00 AM after sleeping for 5 hours, about 2 hours later then planned. Working in the pit at this time.

After looking at Dom’s progress I think he's done a lot more research then I, as our color schemes in the pit are different. I am painting mine as per my interpretation of the kit instructions, I bet Dom’s is much closer to true.

Wife just got up and ask if I was done yet!

Just over 5 hours to go... Dead [xx(]

I'm rushing things a little and have added the green streaky camo. Went on fine. I'll have to let some time pass before I can airbrush the black on the fuselage and top wings. The 'streaking' operation has also left some unwanted paint on the struts and in one instance too far below the leading edge of the middle wing Black Eye [B)]

. The struts will be re-painted light blue anyway, a shade slightly darker than the base colour.

I'm pretty sure I won't finish it on time, but I'll be pretty close (further than I was with at the end of Mad Tiger Day!) Big Smile [:D]

. I expect the decals will be the next major step tomorrow, followed by the varnishing and the weathering and rigging.

I'm also pretty happy with my results so far...

Here is a shot showing some smaller completed items and the base...

Well looks like you're off to a very good start.
I washed all the parts at midnight and left them out to dry so I could get to them in the morning.
I have painted the cockpit and will paint the guns in a couple minutes. I plan to use the kit decals.
Man... this is fun!!

4:00 PM and I have the little Fokker primed. In about a half an hour I'll shoot the some red. I have 7 hours and 45 minutes to complete the build at this but don't know If I can hold out that long.

This little Revell kit is a real jewel and deserves more then what I can give it in 24 hours.

Well besides some bad color choices here is my Fokker Dr. 1 before any decals. I might have to do this kit again after some research and maybe spend at least a week building. I think I'm gonna call this, been at it since 7:00 AM, but I'll see if I get a second (or would it be third) wind and see if I can get the decals on.

Well, I just finished-- and with about two hours to spare! Here are a few pics of the critter.

This is Hptm v. Tutschek's plane. I used the ID from Richtofen's plane, assuming no one would know the difference. I wanted to try that streaky camo pattern, for a challenge, and because it's better looking. The red planes look like you can bite off the tail and drink juice from the model. Tongue [:P]

The streaky camo went fairly quickly due to the extreme tininess of the model. I'm not real happy with the result -- it's a bit too dark -- but it looks ok I guess for a quickie build.

I consider this to be a fairly poor kit, but I consider all aircraft kits to be poor kits compared to decent armor models. That's not a crack, as I build both. It might have to do with the shapes inherent in the different weapons systems, but I find on average that fit in aircraft kits is relatively bad, even the raved-about kits.

It's still a bit sloppy, and I have to clean up the paint job and put the Tutschek's unique black and white wing streamers on. But it's good enough for government work.

It was fun to be involved. Thanks to djmodels for continuing on the Mad Tiger build. Never one to pass up an opportunity to be derivative, I'm running a mad build myself next month -- for Allied WWII armor. Come join if you've got that weekend free! Olive drab is easy. Finding a good 1/72nd scale Allied armor kit is hard. Smile [:)]

Forgot to mention you can click on the pictures to see them bigger. Also, I just brought the kit down to the basement and gave it a light flat coat -- i know the WWI birds were painted glossy, but my kit is way too glossy. It'll also look better when flattened out a bit -- the colors will come together a little better.

This last week was the National Modeling contest in Manila that my club put together, so it was very hectic... i had to drop out of sight for a while because of all the work i had to do aside from finally getting out of college. Larry, really like your camo. I should have picked a more interesting one but with my skill level being what it is I opted for the simple red.

Thanks Josh, good job on your first 1/72 aircraft. It was my first completed 1/72 in many, many years although there is another on the bench right now and about 30 in queue.

Shrikes, I’d say go ahead and do it next Sunday. You might not have a lot of company but we’d keep an eye on you. If I thought the wife would let me I’d grab another kit off the shelf and join you.

Josh, is this really your first 1/72 plane???! Wow! I think you may consider spraying a thin coat of satin varnish next? As Larry said, most WWI aircraft had a glossy look to them, because of the stuff they put onto the fabric to keep it weatherproof. Gloss varnish would look wrong at that scale though.

Dan, superb! I like the base too.

I hope more keep coming over the next few hours!

I will post pics when I can later today when I get home.
I did run into some problems mainly with breaking some parts which delayed my progress and I also spent some time trying to figure out why I couldn't post pics with village photo but I have learned my lessons for the next Mad Build.
1. Use Acrylics for faster drying times.
2. Use fast setting filler and glues such as CA
3. Never think that you have enough time.
All in all...it was a blast!! This is what this hobby is all about!!

We probably both saw that you could use the decals for the Red Baron plane on v. Tutschek's ship and not have to paint it red! Laugh [(-D]

Just a quick list of the supplies I used in the build incase anyone is interested. Seemed to work well for me with no major problem in a quick build like this. Any painting, besides hand brushing was done with my Paasche VLS airbrush.

Glues: Tenax 7-R for fast strong joints
Testors Liquid Cement when I need a little more time.
Flash Medium CA and Flashtac Accelerator for small parts and filling gaps.

Paints: Alclad II Gray Primer/Microfiller goes on smooth and dries fast.
Tamiya, Gunze & MM Acryl acrylic paints.
Alclad II Steel and Aluminum paint.
Mr. Hobby Mr. Color Thinner for all the acrylic paints

Misc: Acrylic Lacquer thinner from hardware store to clean airbrush after Alclad.
Windex for cleaning the Airbrush.

guten tag, kameraden !
here r a couple of pix of Herr. Kempf's new mount, the national markings
have not yet been applied, but it is reasonably complete...
i began at just past midnite, spent most of the first work session painting
parts on the sprues, & that took me until about 4:30 AM...(4 1/2 hrs)
time 2 let the enamel paint dry a little, so....
5 hrs of sleep l8r, wake up, a little more painting (about 1/2 hr)...
then i had 2 go 2 work 4 a couple of hrs, then back home 2 pick up my
little bro & sis & take them 2 the ice skating rink (2 hrs of not building, but fun !)
back home again, dinnertime, then assembly from about 8pm until 1:30 AM.
so about 10 1/2 hrs. build time 2 get 2 this stage.
it's not done, but it's pretty close, i think...
it was fun trying the streaky camo... Big Smile [:D]

this is the eduard kit, i got the profipack, but decided not 2 use the p/e
4 this build... (too much 2 do w/o having 2 hunt 4 lost parts!).
the fit of the kit is very nice, & i only have one complaint:
the sprue attachment points on this lil' pup were quite substantial !
i decided i wasn't going 2 add anything extra 2 this kit,
& i only added 1 part: i had 2 replace the prop shaft when the kit part
disappeared just as i was beginning 2 put stuff together... a brief search,
then a check of rod & tube stock 4 something w/ the rite dimension... no luck !
finally, i tried stretching some sprue 4 the 1st time & after a few tries, i had
a piece that was the rite size... Big Smile [:D]

so, that was my Mad Fokker Day.
it was a lot of fun, but i think i'm going 2 bed early tonite ! Wink [;)]

& the posted builds all look great !
i wonder, did anyone choose a black plane, or a white one?
white paint over red plastic would probably result in a nice pink Dr.1..

Frosty, fantastic results you got there! Very impressed, I am! Not sure if Herr Kempf got his 'Pour le Mérite' medal, but you've earned yours. You've also earned extra sleeping time.

I've just added my black over the wings and the back of the fuselage. Decals come on next. Pics later tonight or tomorrow am at the very latest..

As promised, here are two pics taken a few minutes ago. Black panels on the wings and black rear fuselage to whixh I added the crosses.

Don't know how I did this, but I used the fuselage crosses on the fin and the fin crosses are too large for the fuselage! Black Eye [B)]

Guess what, I'm gonna buy another little Fokker tomorrow! Tongue [:P]

I have to say the aircraft now looks much better. Was afraid my green was not 'strong' enough, but with the black on, it looks just right (to me in any case).

I still have a few little things to add and paint before varnishing and weathering, and rigging (I'll finish the Floh there and then too).

I'm glad everyone so far involved has had great fun with this project (even if there were definitely not enough wheels for Larry..! Big Smile [:D]

). I've had a whale of a time, and I'm greatly enjoying your models too.

hey guys. great builds everyone. i really like the ones with the streaky green camo. i was just wondering if i could join shrikes and build this kit next Sunday, too. when i first read about his build, i just passed it over. but after seeing these builds and thinking how much fun it looks, id love to join if i can find the kit in time. i more or less live in a model building black hole. no good hobby shops, the Hobby Lobby's have almost nothing in the way of a/c kits. so, if i can find the kit, and you guys would let me, id love to build one of these in a day.

Jon, just feel free to join us. It's a lovely little project. If Rafael can join, you'll be three to build this kit this coming week end. We'll be watching with interest!

Rafael, do it if you can. If not, well, maybe for another time.

Josh, it's quite easy, though I'm not really sure it looks anything like a real prop! Ha! First a base coat of sand colour, then apply with a fine brush a few lines of a darker brown colour, from tip to tip (this means you'll go from the front side of one blade to the back side of the ther blade, twice). Then apply a coat of Future, then the decals, then another two coats of Future. The axle is painted black, then drybrushed with silver. That's it!

Ok, work continues on the little Fokker.. I've now added all the missing bits such as machine guns, step,..., given the whole thing a thin coat of satin varnish, and given it a light weathering with oils and pastel dust.

I'll need a few days for the oils to dry properly, after which I can finaly complete the kit with its rigging...

folks, here's the latest look at the Kempf Dr.1...

i painted the white background on the upper wings by hand, because i couldn't
get the kit decals 2 work around the aileron control horns.
i have added some of the national markings, but the eduard decals
have proven 2 b very much of a hassle... i need 2 get more of these
fat crosses... Sad [:(]

the K on the fuselage sides should b dark, not white, but i don't mind that part...
i think it looked better before i tried 2 put the markings on,
maybe i should have just left it alone.... Dead [xx(]

Too harsh on yourself, you are, Frosty!

I think your kit looks fine. Some work to do on the joints (top of fuselage for instance) and cleaning up your parts (there appear to be a bit of sprue left on the tip of the middle wing) but this was no 'normal' project either. Having seen the quality of your work with other builds, I would not worry unduly! I had to buy another kit to get my decals right, and I may build another one soon, taking my time too...

And as to the markings, there's a lot of confusion and little evidence when it comes to identifying and modeling those little Fokkers..

Those are two pics of, supposedly Fokker Dr.1 213/17; Kempf flew this aircraft in Sept 1917, but by Novemnber he was flying aircraft 493/17.

213/17 should have the earlier form of German cross, while 493/17 had the ones shown on your kit. However, on 493/17, the name and all lettering was white and outlined in black, as was the fin. 213 had an overal white fin... 213 had the white part of the tailplane on the left, while it was on the right on 493...

Your kit comes with mixed markings for both Dr.1 Kempf flew... But that's not your fault! Smile [:)]

Well here I am, I didn't forget this GB. Some of you probably thought I was going AWOL or that I was missing.

At the moment I'm trying to relocate my other tiny Fokker (you remember the PE-one), it has been laying around, almost finished for weeks now. But now that I have a little time to work on it, I don't seem to find it anymore on the place that I saw a couple of days ago.

I got Eduard's Strip Down Fokker E-III not too long ago, Dan... It looks fantastic! Need to gather the courage to start it though!

You'll need a lot of courage, but the build itself is not too difficult if you have a soft touch and steady hands.
Can't wait to see pics of what you make of it...

Sorry I didn't answer your question earlier, DJ. I was just going over the pages in this GB and found this.
I did Lothar (there are already more than enough Red Barons), however, when I started building, I noticed that I didn't have the right colors in my box and since my local hobbyshop usually isn't open at midnight, I had to be a little creative Wink [;)]

Just updating the original post with the round-up of kits, decals and all... The brand new 1/72 SMER Dr.1 kit:

However do not get too excited, as apart from a new decal sheet, it's just a re-boxing of the basic Eduard kit ("basic" as in plastic kit only - the eduard kit is very good!), at a slightly higher price... Dead [xx(]
