Mad Komet Day
Posted by djmodels1999 on Monday, December 13, 2004 3:40 AM
Mad Komet Day. 16 January 2005

24 hours to build a 1/72 replica of the diminutive rocket-propelled interceptor... Or 24 hours just to see how far you can go..!

But this one-day build is also open to any other variants of the diminutive aircraft, from its paper and prototype forms, its glider ancestor, to the two-seat version, and its proposed development into the Me-263, and its Japanese little brother.

There's scope for lots of colour schemes, from the very simple, overall light grey and overall red, to "what if" Komet (remember Upnorth's Italian Komet??!), or even machines used by the Allied after the war (France, the UK, the USA, and the Soviets), gliders or rocket-powered aircraft, single- or two-seater Komets.

As of today, 9 January, we have 19 members interested in this MAD concept...Blush [:I]

Please feel free to use the Mad Komed Day Badge..

And here's a round-up of available (or at least at one time available!!) injected kits in 1/72, accessories, books and a few sites to get you in the mood..!

Happy modeling!

KITS

Academy Me-163 B/S

My recommended choice for the basic operational interceptor, but note that the kit comes with the optional parts to model the twin-seater (Me-163S), and also feature the little tractor that was used to move the aircraft on the ground. Decently priced (£4.99 in the UK), well detailed and finely engraved.

PM DFS194

The only kit of this glider, forerunner of the Komet. Simple kit, limited details.

Condor Me-163A

The kit includes a little PE set but apparently has a few problems in terms of shape.

Aerodrom Me-163A

No PE but this 1998 kit may be the better option for a quick build Me-163A.

Lindberg Me-163B

Probably the one NOT to go for. Nearly 40 years old, the kit is grossly overscale and inaccurate. Also released under the Revell name.

Airfix Me-163B

A 1970's kit, typical of Airfix's kits of the time. Raised panel lines, and the armoured windshield molded in one piece with the canopy. Probably not worth the efforts;

Heller Me-163B

Probably the best Komet kit until the arrival of Academy's. Raised panel lines, general shape OK. Provided with the tractor but unfortunately, not a very accurate one.

Maquette Me-163B

Although released in 2001, this kit is not a major improvement on earlier kits. Lots of flash.

A&V Models Me-163C

Kit number 72323, in resin. Released in 1998, it is the best and easier Me-163C around.

Airmodel Me-163D (plus bits for Me-263V1)

Lots of confusion regarding this D variant. Maybe be best to wait for more info to come out before buying this kit. Vacuform kit in any case, probably not the best choice for a One-Day GB..!

CzechMaster Me-163S
Nope, no pics of this one as yet...
Resin kit, for an early style of two-seater Komet, without the little windows between the two canopies (not suitable for a Soviet machine).

MPM Me-163S

1998 kit, probably not as good as Academy's..

Pavla Me-163S

Reportedly not as good as MPM's.

Huma Me-263 (Ju-248)

Probably the only good Me-263 available. Short run, but pretty good quality overall.

A&V Models Yokosuka MXY8 Akigusa

The glider ancestor of the J8M1; resin kit.

MPM Mitsubishi J8M1 Shusui

Short run, but still a decent offering.

Hasegawa Mitsubishi J8M1 Shusui

Apparently an excellent little kit!

DECALS

ESCI Sheet 43

Probably hard to find; over 20 years old.

Techmod Sheet 72061

ACCESSORIES

Falcon Vacuformed Canopy, set 0105 (includes many other canopies for WWII German birds!); a must if you are building the Airfix kit!

Squadron Vacuformed Canopy, set 9122
For the Heller kit only..!

Airwaves PE set, set 72059

Eduard PE set, set 72099

For Heller kit only, also includes details for the tractor.

Eduard PE set, set SS136

For the Academy kit, includes details for B and S variants; not complete as it does not give details for sides of cockpit, but overall, reportedly, a very good set.

PART PE set, set 72-121

Review of the PART set:
http://www.kitreview.com/reviews/me163reviewbg_1.htm

CMK detail sets 7039, 7040 and 7041
7039 is interior details for Academy's Me-163B, with PE and resin bits, film for the instrument panel, plus a vacuformed canopy;
7040 is interior details for Academy's Me-163S, with PE and resin bits, films for the instrument panels, plus vacuformed canopies and decals for 2 aircraft;
7041 is exterior details for Academy's Me-163B, resin and PE bits.

Kora wheel set, set 7203
Set of wheels for Academy's Komet

S&M Model engine set, set SM07

Resin Watler rocket engine. Reportedly this engine only equipped the Me-163C; Shame..!

Eduard mask set, set XS088
Masking set for Academy's Komets.

Little over a month away and I’m still looking forward to this build…about the same way I’m looking forward to my next root canal. Just kidding, I said it before these “Mad” builds are a lot of fun so grab a Komet kit and join us other mad builders!

I also got the Academy kit, probably do the B version. What version was the famous 'rot' flight (the most famous colour scheme only ever used for one flight for any aircraft?)?

Osher, I suppose you're reffering to the overall-red Komet. It was prototype V41, identical to the production B model as far as I know but I'm not certain it carried any armament...

Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the info! I bought ages ago the Xtracolour RLM 23 paint specifically for building this particular aircraft flight. I guess I don't need to state now which colour scheme I intend to build in!

Can't wait to see your Komet, Osher. I've been reading that info on the Red Komet and found it quite interesting. Obviously, since the red was soon removed after the first operational flight, it's got to be a very neat, clean scheme!

I think I'm gonna go for V21, in a light grey overal scheme, wearing just the crosses and the svastikas and tiny V21 'numbers'. It does not wear any of the large black letters near the fuselage crosses, which I do not have anyway with the kit or even in my decal bank... That will leave me more time for what I have in mind... V21 was the aircraft used for the first flight with the engine running.

I think when it comes to the decals for V41 I have 3 options: create my own, using a generic decal sheet of German lettering; find my old Heller kit (or buy one); or assume that the lettering was left out when it was repainted (which luckily could have happened, and can't be disproved!). Unless that is, someone knows of a good decal sheet? Hannants don't have one.

On another note...I guess it's not cheating to build the tractor unit before the MKD?

Yes, there are some open-ended possibilities offered by this red Komet as there are apparently no photographic evidence and only the word of its pilot... Since it was done a bit as a joke, I'd have thought the markings (other than the national insignas) and stencils would have been covered up... Can't even think they would have left the V41 on the fin either... But the Heller decal sheet is obviously based upon the 5 view drawings in the Profile booklet and this shows all the markings. I have the Polish book (shown above in the original post) that's much newer than the Profile and that shows on the front cover another profile of the red Komet with all its markings and stencils, plus a touch of weathering that can't just be right...

Yep, makes sense. I think I'll build mine with just the crosses and swases. It was painted in a hurry, so it's reasonable to assume they wouldn't have bothered with everything else (there again, it's just as reasonable to assume they might have!). I'm going to assume too it was finished in gloss.

Osher, to answer your question about the tractor, yes go ahead and start it now if you want; as it's not a feature of all Komet kits, I can not expect the tractor to be part of a 24hrs build for those who have the Heller or Academy kits..

As to the glossy red, I'd be careful not to make it too glossy. In 1/72, high gloss will make your model look toy-like. I'd go for a mat red (covers better too!) and give a one or maybe a couple of Klear/Future coats to give it a 'hint' of a shine.

A very neat choice, Joe! Luckily for you the Academy kit feature the stronger attachment point for the pitot tube! With only 24 hours, any additional work can be a problem!

Looking forward to seeing your Komet completed!

Well the thing is, Joe, this guy is only giving away his own theory, given that the Komets operated from bases where older bombers where used, hence the 70/71 on the wings, and possibly the fuselages of the Komet... The 74/75/76 combo could be right but there are few - I can't think of any - representations of Komets showing a two tone grey camo on the wings... But who can say..?

In any cases, the 70/71 combo would only have been applied on early Komets while White 14, the one you want to model, is a later production aircraft and may have had a later green camo of 81/83 (mauve/green and bright green kind of colours... ).

Difficult...

Here's some more info on camouflages for Komets... (from D Brown on HyperScale):

"The slow production and delivery of the Me 163B resulted in it wearing a variety of camouflage colours from the time of the first deliveries (December 1943) to the cessation of production (February 1945). It is known from the many published photos and other documentation that most of Ekdo.16's aircraft were Me 163 BVs (V: "Versuchs", or test/experimental) and many were uncamouflaged, being painted in either RLM 02, or more likely, RLM 76. Other aircraft are known to have had very dark, low contrast upper wing colours, which do not suggest the 74/75 greys, but more likely the 70/71 greens. Their fuselages are interpreted as being painted in 76 with a mottle of 75.

The well-photographed aircraft "White 05" is thought to be a Me 163 BV variant, as it and other similarly painted Ekdo.16 aircraft appear to be missing their Werknummern. However, photos indicate that all V-aircraft did at one time have their Versuchsnummer painted on the tail in black, but given the dark colour of these aircraft's tails could be difficult to see. Alternatively, if the aircraft were delivered directly to the unit initially in overall 65 and soon in 76, the number could easily have been over-painted at the unit level when the camouflage colours were applied.

As Me 163 production slowly increased, aircraft with moderate-contrast schemes suggestive of 74/75/76 begin to appear. Aircraft with such schemes (or variations) have been documented during the restoration of these aircraft and faithfully reproduced (Merrick and Hitchcock, 1980, pp.48-49). There is also colour photographic evidence of Me 163s painted in the 81/83 scheme (Merrick and Hitchcock, 1980, p.50; Sheflin, 1983, pp.18-19). What is unknown is when this change-over to the late-war colours took place and if it was officially documented. The date of this change could not have been any later than February 1945, as production of the aircraft ceased during this month with a total of 364 aircraft completed and delivered to Ekdo.16, I. II. and IV./JG 400 and IV./EJG 1 (Smith and Kay, 1972). It is thought likely that an order authorizing this change must have been issued sometime in late 1944-early 1945."

Note that Mr Brown only says 'use of schemes suggestive of 74/75/76'... Since the wings were delivered painted and attached to the primed (RLM 76???) fuselage, it is possible to think that at one time, maybe for White 14, the mottled camo consists of 74 and/or 75 over 76, but that the wings are still 70/71, either with 76 (light grey) or even 65 (very light blue) undersides...

Thank goodness I bought the Huma 263 model, only two options to worry about. Unless of course you consider all the Luft. 46 possibilities? Hmmm...
