Joe...

Just wanted to thank you for a great Group Build. This was my first and will for sure NOT be my last. This is what modeling is all about sharing with friends and enjoying and learning from each other. Incredible work was posted!!! Congrats to all.

If you start another GB count me in.

Thanks Again.

Richard - I agree... I've been in more than a few GB's but this is the first time I have built with most of the people in this one... I have thoroughly enjoyed conversing with all of you and sharing what little knowledge I have... Thanks to everyone!!! especially Joe for hosting this!

I have just re-reviewed this build and I must say that you folks put out some super work.  Congratulations to all of you.  I was extremely glad to be part of it.  Thanks Joe, you did one fantastic job setting this up and the subject was fantastic.  It presented a good history lesson for each of us.  I am looking forward to your next build if you decide to have one.

Scott, Joe - thanks!!!  There's been some slow building the last month or so but once I finish this baby I will post the final result.   You can bet there are going to be more of these in the future... a really fun build!  I am probably going to leave her pristine like this because from all accounts in the interwar years the planes were kept immaculate to stir public interest in flying and its use by the armed services.  Especially the Marines....

I thought I should go ahead and post my progress even though I haven't finish as this is the day that gave us a reason to build these aircraft.  The rudder if it is showing in these shots has been stuck on with fun-tac just to give a view, it is lacking 90% of the vracing on the wings and the canopy pieces.

This really was a good kit I think I got too rushed when it came to the PE.  But I am enjoying scratching the rigging with evergreen.  You can kind of see on one of the sides where I have connected a few pieces and one leg hanging waiting to glue.

at approximately 6 am on december 7 1941 six japanese carriers.  the akagi, the kaga, the soryu, the hiryu. the shokaku.  and the zuikaku.  began to launch the first of two waves.  358 a/c.  these aircraft formed after what was termed the most flawless launch recorded began to head to hawaiian islands.  at approximately 7:55 am the first attack began.  the only flaw of the execution of the plan occured at this point.  the dive bombers formed to attack the airfields as the torpedo planes formed to attack the harbor.  both groups attacked their targets at approximately the same moment.

when all was finished the dead and wounded numbered well over 2400.  the backbone of the us fleet lay in smoking twisted hulks.  and the us was ushered into world war 2.  for this the japanese lost 45 airmen.

Looks good Scott, what kind of base is it on?

Furniture grade white pine board painted with azure dark blue latex with two parts evergreen green added.  Then a fine layer of acrylic gel with a light coat of satin sprayed over it.  Got this recipe from Jeff Hern and was the first time I tried it.  I really like this process because it was so clean and easy to use.  Urathanes are really hard to use and are toxic, and with clear sillicone, although cheap, I seem to get more of it on me then on the base due to it being so sticky.

A frame will be put around it using crown molding which will be stained and coated with gloss polyurathane.  I ordered a plate to be engraved from the local trophy shop.  Hope to have the whole deal wrapped up in a few weeks.

Well guys, I finally got use of a camera that works and here are the final results after blowing off all the cat hair, minus some touch-ups, rigging, anchors, a few additions to the crew, and a new floatplane being built to put atop the turret.  But she's as good as I can get and is ready for sea trials.  Joe, sorry to mention that she's in her 1938 appearance, umm, I saw one done up like this at the IPMS Nationals website and was quit impressed, so I changed mine over to a backdated Arizona as well.  So whats a few missing radars, top guns, and Kingfishers eh?  Those old O2 Bipe planes are a lot of fun to build.

This one couldn't be easier:

Unlike their army the Japanese Navy settled solely on the Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

Tamiya's kit is very comprehensive inasmuch as they give you a nice color plate and decals specific to that event, as well as two complete pilot figures, one standing and one seated Smile [:)]

I've been done with the Kate for about two weeks now but haven't been able to post b/c I don't have a proper camera.  Unfortunately I don't think I will have access to one in time so I guess I'll have to post these regrettably crappy pictures from my camera just to document that I actually finished.  I hope to get a new camera for xmas so I might post some decent photos in a few weeks.  Anyhoo here's the 1/48 hasegawa B5N2 Kate with Edouard PE kit finished with Gunze and Tamiya acrylics.  I know, the photos suck.  Hopefully I will make amends for this soon.

Just wanted to update my progress. I've gotten to the point where I'm about ready to throw some paint. I'll post some pics as soon as I can. I no longer have my digicam, so I'll be using a regular camera and I'll have to get them developed.

well there was at the very least 3 different paint schemes during the raid on Pearl Harbour first was the all Gray paint scheme that seems to encompass at least 50% of the aircraft while the other 25% had the Green upper fuselage and 25% had the Green Mottled Gray camo pattern. And I am pretty sure the color coding on the tails were similar to pre War USN color coding.

Mike - cool!  I like that red and yellow tail on the first one.. I might have to look into doing one for fun down the road and try that pattern.

I also like the second one.. I guess in my mind when I think of PH that is the scheme that comes to mind.  I was surprised to find there were so many schemes the Japanese used besides that type or the all dark green and gray.  On the Shokaku decal set I have it even has a scheme that looks something like german mottle on the upper fuselage of a Kate...

I hope to have semi complete pics by tomorrow... I think I still have some decals left to put on it as well so I better get off of here and check real quick!!

hmmm good idea.  All I have is the F3F at present but the Avenger was on my short list of planes to do... and a Hellcat was in the longer list of kits.  That would be nice in my entertainment center.  I have just enough shelves to put one at each level starting with the F3F and moving down...  better than the Avenger might be an F8F the end of that line of fighters...  it would be interesting because you could see the evolution of the same basic designe refined into a very powerful fighter...

cool... well I am all done with the F3F (except for some minor things and the struts and bracing)  I will take pics of the *almost* complete model in case I don't finish it.  12 pieces of tiny plastic strips are the only obstacle to finishing it.  I guess this weekend I can put it into high gear and try to get that done, but will post just in case.

I kinda liked doing this colorful little plane.  I just need to get better at long thin pieces of PE because cutting and mounting all the individual struts is a real pain!

The tape idea sounds like it might work.  Hope to see it when its done.

I'm on the home stretch with the Arizona.  Just a few more railings, paint and gel the base, and take some pics before the cat makes another straffing run on it.

Joe, thanks for hosting this build, it has been fun and challanging.

well I actually decided to scrap painting on the yellow horizontal stripes and have gone for cutting the Tamiya tape into the right size strips and also since the tape is the exact color of the decal (LOL)
