Great Jules, glad you could find something you can work with! Looking forward to the pics.

Well, almost finished the wheel wells. I have to attach the engine nacelles and then a little bit of masking and to the paint shop!
Hey for pre-shading, do you put a base coat on (in this case the light gull grey for the undersides) then paint your dark lines on then another layer of the light gull grey? I'm going to try some pre-shading for my beaufighter. Never done it before.

Jay I preshade all my builds and the standard colour i use for it is RLM 66, I don't normally prime my models only if i've had to do a lot of filling and sanding i normally just spray on the 66 straight on the plastic and then put on the base coat layer by layer until i'm happy with the shadeThumbs Up [tup]

Whoa, I found this build lurking on page 3!
Jules, Yes I'm doing the Tamiya A6M2 zero for the Pearl Harbour GB.

Update on my Beaufighter, I got the engines on and now I just have to add the airscoops on the top of the nacelles then it is time for the paint shop!.

Jay sounds like progres on the Beau. How about some update shots before you slap on the paint?

As for me, I picked up some reference books at the local library on the weekend, primarily a two volume on RCAF history by Canav publishers. I think its a 3 volume but they only had two and they were the two I wanted anyway. I picked it up because they had some cutaway drawings of the Lancaster mk.X so that I can compare it to the Hasegawa offering. As far as I know the only difference between the Canadian built Mk.X and the British built Mk.III is the mk.X used some American made elctronics and stuff so the basic airframe should be the same.

Anyway, the book is loaded with other information and original photographs of aircraft used by Canadian's during both world wars. I had no idea how many different types of aircraft we flew Shock [:O]! I have my eye on a P-51 1a as I just built one in American markings for the North Africa GB out of the Academy kit (great kit - 1/72). Also some interesting P-47's in the far east. I think my scanner is going to be busy for the next couple of weeks Big Smile [:D]. I'll try to post some of it here when I get the chance.

Hey, Dave, could you do a check in your book to see about Beaufighters from RCAF 404? I am looking for one flown by Sqdn/Ldr Sid Shulemson. I know he flew the aircraft with code EE*S but as for serial, I have no idea.

A P-51 mk1 eh? I think RCAF 400 and 414 flew them in the recon fighter roles. I want to do one in the markings of FLt Douglas Irving "Sammy" Hall. There was a story I read about how on returning from a photo mission, he found his airfield being attacked by a groupd of fw-190's and he promptly shot down 4 of them! This put his total kills to 7 and he finished the war and ace! There are a lot of neat stories and pilots and aircraft the Canadians used.

I don't hink any Canadian units used the P-47 but many Canadians were in RAF units in the CBI theatre. I want to do one of those P-47s Particularily one flown by Bert Madill (who lives in Edmonton). He was one of the pilots interviewed for the book at the bottom of my sig. He was credited with one Japanese aircraft but he claims he never shot any one down. Some bomber crews were eyewitness to a P-47 shooting down a japanese aircraft and since Bert was the only one in the area, they gave it to him.

Got a start on the Cutting Edge Resin Pit for the Hobbycraft Sea Fury today. It actually looks like it will fit without major surgery Shock [:O]. Only problem with the pit is that it's gonna be mostly black. I know that's true to the real aircraft, but it's kinda boring in a model. I'm going to be out of town for a few days, but hope to post some progress pics next week.

Jay took a look for Sid's plane but no luck. There was a picture of what looks like EE*X (NV173) and another nice shot of an unidentified 404 sq. readying for take off. I'll scan them for you when I get a chance.

Oh ya... was troling some other GB's today and hear you've been published in FSM. Haven't got the latest copy yet with the move and everything so I haven't seen it but congradulations anyway! Propeller [8-]

Rick & Anthony stop teasing and post pics!!!!

Yeah guys, I'll show mine if you show me yours...
progress pics guys, geewiz, get your mind out of the gutter! You'd think Tom and Kremps were influencing you! Speaking of Tom, has anyone heard if he's found a kit to join us with?

I'll try to get some pics up tonight.

edit- I had totally forgotten I had sent in the tip. That was way back in the first few months of the BoB GB! I also didn't even see it in the reader tips (I had read the mag front to back over the weekend), I remember reading the tip before it and the one down the page but I must have sub-consciously skipped over it. It is kinda neat to see my name in printing like that! I'm famousApprove [^]Big Smile [:D]

Here's an update on my "scary" Airfix CF-18.

1. Leading Edge decals arrived in less than 2 weeks, and well before the start date. They are beautiful, and the C-47 scheme is even nicer. Speaking of which...can we make this an annual fall group build? Big Smile [:D]

2. I thought the decals for the stab (bright blue with a very slick fade effect at the bottom) covered the whole stab. If I'd just looked at the picture of the set on their website, I would have had a clue, but I didn't.

So, I'll have to figure out how to do the effect myself, but as long as I experiment a lot first, it should work out. The plan is to paint the whole stab blue and then use a soft mask to spray some light gray on.

3. On September 1st I primed all the parts with the Wal-Mart house brand. This past weekend I bought the Testors Bright Blue for the stab, and Rustoleum Winter gray and Pewter Gloss for the camo.

4. I also picked up, for only 97 cents Big Smile [:D], a craft base that I'll paint in a Canadian scheme. I figure I'll do a flag, or the old-style red, white and blue roundel, or do the red and white zig-zag lines in a way similar to the layout on the decal sheet above, maybe with a small roundel or large maple leaf between the two wide ends. Decisions, decisions...

5. I decided to do very little weathering, all the photos I've found of these airshow circuit birds are really clean.

6. My son has announced that he wants to build the Revell snap-tite Blue Angels F/A-18 and paint it as an operational jet. So, I'm just going to hand off the weapons, drop tanks and decals from the Airfix kit to him. Nice how things work out sometimes.

7. If you haven't dozed off by now...It will be awhile before I'm back (but no more novel-length updates!) because I am going to finish my Revell USS Lionfish before I do too much more with the CF-18. The Lionfish only has 30 parts and 3 colors, but I want to take extra care because it was the last kit my grandad worked on, and it's going to my parents. That said, if everything stays on schedule (HA!) the CF-18 should be done by the end of the first week in October.

Hi There

I've been following your GB with interest and wanted to pass on a web site you may find interesting for RCAF/CAF Aircraft, SQN codes & SN it's http://www.ody.ca/~bwalker/

The guy running it has been of great help in my research on 401, 429 & 438 Sqn aircrafts, codes & Sn for my builds. Keep up the good work.

Cheers
Bear

Jay She is looking good, especially those resin radials. well worth the extra effort I'd say. How'd the tail wheel work out?

Dave, as for the tail wheel, I cut the hole for it and then glued in a piece of stock styrene so as to make it recessed a bit. I'll drill a little hole for the tail wheel when I'm ready.

I didn't get to painting yet as I thought while I'm at it I should 'fix' up the wheel bay doors. I used my rotary tool to cut down and thin the doors and then I hollowed out where the buldges were. I added some strip styrene for the structure of the doors. It looks a lot better now.

I'm going to be getting more modeling in now as my wife has to get up early to get to work (she had a slight shift change, she starts work at 6:30am now). If I get up with her I can model from about 6 - 7am everyday with no interuptions! Not sure how long this shift will last but it is kind of nice.Smile [:)]

Jay For all of our married life my wife has worked evenings on the weekends which has always left me loads of "MEBig Smile [:D]" time for my'projects'. Doesn't do much for the social life though. We are still trying to adjust to the new life and schedule here in BC and I am finding it very hard to get into the modeling grove. Spent some time last night to organize my work space a little better so maybe that will help.

Jay your build is looking sweet mateThumbs Up [tup]You sure have gone to the extreme on it, worth it IMHOThumbs Up [tup]

AS for me i'm still waitng for the decals to arrive before i start the camo job but i have preshaded the Spit II, i have had a little setback though, when i hit the old paintjob with oven cleaner i covered the pit with blutac and somehow it managed to get inside and strip the paint from the pit, I've pulled out the seat and control stick but the rest i'll have to paint while inside the fueselage, i won't even try to repaint the I/P i'll just use the old Tamiya decal, the decal will look ok as long as i make sure i get it in the right spot so when i hit with softener the dials will sink into the recess..............

Grat job on the Quad gun Tractor Panzer67. Jules that really sucks. I guess this is turning out be a complete build after all eh? I here you about the extreme thing, everytime I turn around I find something else I can 'fix'. It looks so much better though doesn't it.

I couldn't get to the paint shop just yet as there were a few fiddly bits I need to add that I forgot, like the fuel dump tubes located on the back side of the engine nacelles just aft of the wheel wells. It was done this morning, now I have to preshade and mask, then to the paint shop! This weekend looks to be way to busy to get any plastic time in so I'll have for wait for monday or tuesday to paint.Sigh [sigh]

Hi all. Just checking in. Looks like some good progress being made here. I just got a little bit started on the CT-133 and the CF-18 but it'll be some time before any pics are forthcoming. I'm finishing two builds for other GBs that are "due" the end of the month but I haven't forgotten this one.

Hope everyone's weekend was a productive as mine! First off I got my basement stairwell painted! It used be a pink colour - ugh! Now it is a nice creamy beige colour.

As for my model I got it pre-shaded and the light gull grey of the under sides AB'd on. I was lazy and I tried an interesting method of preshading using black marker (sharpie). I think it worked pretty good. I also got a hold of a guy who knows AC serials and I think I got a valid serial for the Beaufighter EE*S flown buy Sqdn/Ldr Shulemson in June of 1944. Now I just have to make my own decals for it.

And I also got a hold of Col Doug Lindsey hear in Alberta. He was an ace in WW2 (7.5) and also got 2 Mig kills in Korea. Hopefully I can contact him next time I am visiting the in-laws (they live in a town less than 1/2 hour from where Doug lives). I now have another project for the near future (spitfire mk9 of RCAF 403)!

as I said I was very productive!Big Smile [:D]Tongue [:P]

Sounds like a great weekend Jay... except for the house painting, did a lot of that myself this weekend.

As for modeling, got the North Africa GB out of the way and some more progress on my OOTB GB (B-17F) so won't be long before I can get started on this one. Big Smile [:D]
