Update: Expanding Get Schooled! (Trainers) GB into 2006.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the aircraft Group Build focused on building planes used for training. Any era, any scale, any nationality, military or civil, just as long as it is done with a training theme/markings, it's good.
Crossbuilds are permitted as are What-Ifs (I'd be fool to not encourage creativity in our hobby). The intention of this group build is to provide a platform for people to share their builds with others regarding a subject matter in aviation (Trainers) I felt gets overlooked from time to time.

Just email me or post here with the following information if you are interested in joining.
- Scale of kit
- Kit manufacturer name
- Conversion kit manufacturer name (if applicable)
- Plane manufacturer name
- Plane designation or model name
- Plane knickname (if applicable)

This sounds like a great GB, but unfortunately I don't have one in my stash and I recently built one. But as an unofficial entry, here' s a picture of my A5M4-K trainer. It's a classic Airframes 1/48 kit.

I would love to see the Mig21-UM, or anybody with an I-16 trainer?

Nice work on the 2 seater Claude. I didn't know they made any of those. I just started a 1/72 Mig-21UM for this build. It is an Aero Team kit, I think from Russia. Fairly crude, but not too bad. About the same quality as the early Hasegawa Mig-21 F-13, but with a moderately better cockpit.

Since I got my T-1 from Chris, I might add that to the GB, too. But I'll finish the T-2 first & see what kind of time is left! ;-)

I believe the Pilatus PC-9A kit is 1/72, however I'm not sure of the manufacturer. Will let you know asap.

Hey Calvin. Just curious.. I didnt miss any of the decals when I sent that kit did I. They are all there?.. If not, let me know, and I will go through what i have left from that sheet.. To be honest, I wished I had taken the Blue Impulse colours rather than doing the 50th anniversary scheme. It was a bear to do, believe me.. Also curious, if you do the T-1B, will you stick to that scheme, because I have plenty of reference pics of the everyday red trainer scheme for that bird if you go in that direction..

Well this sounds like a good time to start my "Trumpeter 1/32 MiG-21 UM mongol B". It will be the Czech version just not sure on the paint/decals yet.

I have a few pictures to post of the progress on my 1/72 Aero Team Mig-21UM Mongol B. I think the kit is from Russia and it is fairly crude with moldings that are not at all crisp or clean. The cockpit was just some slabs of sheet styrene. I painted up a couple of pilots from the spares box to cover up some of the emptiness in the pit. The SRO-2 Khrom IFF antenna (odd rods) on the tail fin and under the nose were grossly oversized, so I cut them off and replaced them with thin copper wire. The various auxillary air intakes around the rear fuselage were very crude. I carved them down and drilled out the interiors. The canopy fit obviously needs some work yet and I need to build a HUD or something to fill up the deck in front of the forward cockpit. The closeup photo of the pilots magnifies the imperfections of the molding. They are sitting in front of a #11 X-Acto blade.

Well, the Mongol is ready to fly, now all we need is a student and an IP insane enough to go up with him. Ooooppps, they are already in the cockpit!
I think that this is the only Mig-21 trainer in 1/72 scale, so it is the best and the worst at the same time. Quite a bit of the molding looks like it was done by Atilla the Hun, but the decals were excellent. They offered the choice of Russian, Czech or East German. The finish is Model Master Metalizer, buffing Aluminum Paste. I buffed selected panels as soon as it was dry enough to do so, (about a 1/2 hour). A coat of Future preceeded the decals and a coat of clear flat followed. The outside of the exhause is MM metalizer titanium and the inside is Burnt Iron. Someone must have installed the engine backwards because the exhaust looks a lot more like the compressor face inlet fan.

Thats the 1/48 Monogram. FYI, the new rerelease still has the parts for the Harvard on the trees, so if anybody is interested in that option, they're there.

Just to make a correction.. The T-4 that I had planned on doing was actually the Japanese Kawasaki T-4.. But I have since decided against that one for time costraints, and will focus on the BAe Hawk in Japanese markings..

Hi folks, just to let you know I've gone Hawk mad!!! I've just started building 3 simultaneously. One will be grey scheme, one camoflague and one gloss black. Actual aircraft are undecided. This is the first time I've tried production line modelling. I'll keep you posted.

I get bored, really, really easily.. If I had to just build one, and sit around waiting for something to dry. I would go mad!.. If its the same model that you are doing, then construction will be a snap.. Its the painting that will take its time. But you will never be bored!.. Good luck with the Hawk factory!

Hi guys,

Write me off on the Alpha Jet...
And make it a Spitfire Mk. IX from the Belgian Air Force. I'll use the Revell 1/72 kit with DACO Belgian roundels and markings.

This is a trainig a/c in NMF colour and a yellow band around the fuselage and wings.

lodni_k - Please correct me if I have misrepresented your T-1 and T-2 builds above on the chalkboard.

roadkill - What is the scale and kit manufacturer for your T-28?

johnforster - I think your kit manufacturer is L&M. That's the most recent release of that plane in 1/72 scale. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Anyone interested in doing a T-33, T-34, or a PT-20. Thought for sure I'd see one of those by now.

Hello Ya'll,
Sunday Galveston, TX., about 70 miles south of Houston, TX. put on a great little Air Show. There were many TRAINER aircraft out there that I managed to get pictures of. And sence this is a trainer GB I thought why not show ya'll so of the real planes.

Aus - I think the JASDF T-2 was actually made by Mitsubishi... the fighter version being the JASDF F-1, both based on the Anglo-French Jaguar. Not sure what the T-1 is though? Do you want me to add your T-33 from your Coming Soon list to the chalkboard, Aus? I'd love to see a T-33 up there and we've got the rest of the year on this build.

Another T-1?.. I have a heap of pictures of the fluro red trainer T-1B's if you are thinking of a cool livery!.. Can I have mine back now?? hahaha, just jokes!.. Cant wait to see it done mate!.. My Academy 1/32 Hornet arrives tonight.. Very excited!.. Although I am in the process of building a 1/400 Fujimi replica of Kokura Castle, and also I got my hands on a Mirage III for my Australian RAAF collection.. Havnt done anything today, as we have started the World Schoolboy Rugby tournament here in my city, so I was at that all day!

ps, yes his is the Hasegawa kit.. I got the double pack and Calvin got the second kit..

If crossbuilding and What If's are allowed, put me down for two more trainers. I'm doing a grey (I think) Saab TF-37 Viggen for the RAAF What If GB, and that "Could have been" should be just right for this GB also. It's a 1/72 Revell #4365 kit.

I'm also going to build a 1/72 Revell 4381 as a Saab 35GT Draken in FAV markings and camo scheme, circa 1971. It's also a "Could have been" ...
