F1 Group Build
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 12, 2005 5:48 PM

Start your Engines!

After seeing the recent interest in F1 models, I decided to start a F1 Group Build. The starting date will be far away to try and interest other members into trying their hand at building an F1 car instead of something used by the military.

Rules:
1)All members are welcomed to join, but rude behavior and profane remarks and topics will get you kicked from the build.
2)Any kit, any scale, any car is welcomed as long as it is a true F1 car.
3)Aftermarket and photo etch parts are allowed.
4)Models must remain unstarted until the start date, but research, buying AM and PE, and opening and looking at the kit are welcomed.
5)Have fun!

Start Date: October 17th
End Date: N/A (Will be decided once the GB gets into swing.

I will make the badge and you can wear it during the time the build runs even if you have finished your car. The badge shouldn't be worn when the build ends. I plan on having voting on a couple of different things if the build has enough members and is popular enough.

If you wish to sign up, please provide the following information:
Brand- Scale- Car-

Also feel free to list any AM and PE items you plan on using.

wow, I thought I was the only F1 fan here. I've been a McLaren fan since I can remember. I'm in with Mika Häkkinen's McLaren from the 1997 season. I'll let you know of what kit it is later (I got it out in the storige).

I'm interested I'm currently finishing up on the Heller 1/12 Ligier but I have several other Tamiya 1/12 kits and Revell 1/24 kits. I 'm not sure what I'll build maybe the Tamiya 1/12 McLaren M23.
When in doubt just build it. Mark http://www.ipmslivonia.org/ipms/

Would anyone here mind if I moved up the start date? I originally planned on building the Tauro 1/48 Macchi MC205 Veltro, but I don't feel like working with that much flash and fit errors right now. Of course, it's not like I have a million other kits in my closet to work on. I'll have a finished M-26 tank next week, and a finished P-51 once I get around to finishing the body work and painting it. I also have a Gundam model which has been off and on. I would like to scratchbuild a lot of detail for it, but I don't have the skills to do so right now. I also have a Bf 110G partly done, but I put it on hold till after Christmas so I can get the new Eduard PE set for it. I'm a mess, but I still haven't lost parts for any of the kits yet.

My favorite team has been BMW Williams, but since both Ralf and Juan left I decided to follow my favorite driver, Juan. I still love the look and power of the BMW cars still. The FW24 was a real radical design, but had constant problems with the brakes.

Ryan, I'm in! Just don't ask me at this stage which one I'll build! Will be able to tell closer to the time...

By moving up the date - is that moving it earlier or later?

mkhoot, I've heard that McLaren is a very nice model, looking forward to seeing it!

I would be moving the date earlier. I'm thinking of October 17th which is the day after the F1 season ends.

It'll probably be between 2 to 4 months from the start date. I'll make sure everyone has time to finish.

I'll reveal the badge on the day it starts.

Does anyone have any objections to moving the starting date from November 4th to October 17th?

It's depressing that Montoya earned the Pole Position for Belgum, but finished 14th due to an accident. I really thought he could easily win it. There are only 6 points between McLaren and Renault! McLaren has earned 10+ points in their last 4 races and average15.25 those 4 races. Renault average 8.75 for those last 4 races. McLaren could very well take the lead by their outstanding performance late in the year.

Yes, yes, yes......I love F1. I've been waiting for an F1 GB for a while, didn't know there were so many people here interested in F1. I might be able to do a Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312T4. No carbon fibre on that one, it's all aluminium...... The dates look good to me too.

Jules Didn't know you were interested in F1 mate.

ryan Mclaren and Kimi should have won both championships by now. All those engine failures and stupid mistakes have killed them. They've had the best car since the fourth round of the season......BTW, I'm a Mclaren fan too, so it doesn't make me happy.....

I went to the Gold Coast Indy a few years back and mate it was AwesomeBig Smile [:D] Fast cars and an Ocean of Chicks in Bikini'sCool [8D]Tongue [:P] Oh and of course "Ice Cold Beer"

OK I'm definatly in with the Tamiya Lotus 25 in 1/20, not much to the kit but i do have my work cut out for me, all the Chrome bits have gotta go so they will cop a coating of Easy Off oven cleaner and then be recoated in Alclad II and maybe some BMF, I'm also going to have to wire up the engine and brake lines as well as remove the cast on springs from the shocks and replace them with copper wire, apart from that the only other thing i think i'll do is to add some mesh around the fuel injectors......
This is gonna be fun, My first Car BuildBig Smile [:D]

Car builds are fun mate. I like the painting most. Trying to get that perfect finish on the model is great. I'm gonna try the super-detail thing on my 312T4. BTW.....I just won my kit on ebay.Party [party] And for those who don't know, the Ferrari 312T4 was the car that Jody Scheckter drove to the world championship in 1979 (Gilles Villeneuve drove the car too). According to legend, Enzo Ferrari thought it was the ugliest Ferrari ever.......

BTW, Jules I have a few photos in my collection that might be helpful when you build your 25. I'll send them to you if you want them.Thumbs Up [tup]

I've never seen chrome parts in a Tamiya kit, except for the thin PE like ones. And they don't require any clean up and look great.

All you guys are talking about adding brake lines and wiring the engine. I haven't built many car kits, and I never even attempted this. I wouldn't know exactly where to put them on a F1 car. Does anyone know where I can find some good pictures of the engine in the BMW FW24?

The starting date has been changed to October 17th. Everyone please make sure there are no errors in your names and projects.

You'll have some probs finding good ref pics on the FW24, esp interior. Bit too "new". Check over at f1m though, there might be something...

Ugliest Ferrari...? Well, I might be biased (due to Jody winning in that one!) but I'd say the 92/93 one (unsure as to the exact year) Berger and Alesi - that thing with the white stripe running along the lenth of the car! What a way to bugger up a nice thing! Ugly or not, it got the results... Wink [;)] (The T4, that is...)

ryan I have a few shots of the FW24 that I'll post in a few days. It's hard to find high quality pics of modern cars, but they are out there.

SeaBee I quite like the looks of the T4. It's not a great looking car (like the Lotus 79 was), but I don't mind looking at it. The thing I remember most about the 79 car was that amazing battle between Gilles Villeneuve and Rene Arnoux at Dijon (I can't imagine that happening these days Sad [:(]). IMO, the ugliest Ferrari ever was the F310 used during the 96 season. Everything on that car was ugly, and it was made even worse later in the year when they added the raised nose.Yuck [yuck]

Okay, time to commit: Just ordered, but it seems to be on back-order. So if it pitches up more or less in time, I'll be doing a S27 1:20 R25. Will be my first resin experience, so bear with me if I ask stupid questions. If it's not here in time, no worries - I'll do something else.

Daniel, as for the T4's looks, I referred to the comment you made about Enzo Ferrari. I actually like the look of it. (Being red helps... Wink [;)]) As for the "old days" - we have a series of progs running here now prior to each GP covering the 76 season... man, did Lauda drift that Ferrari! Awesome! Nowadays, sadly, it's a bit too much scalectrix and too little racing...

So far, there are 7 participants in this group build. Sounds like a pretty good number, but I think we can attract more. F1 car kits are fun to build and can really highten your modeling skills from detail painting, assembly of small parts, nice looking glossy paint jobs, and decaling. You don't have to be a model car builder to build a F1 car.

Just discovered this GB and it reminded me that it has been years ago that I built an F1, so IF the end date lies far enough in the future I might be able to join later on with a Tamiya, still unknown model.

I got my 312T4 today so I'm good to go. The Tamiya kit looks awesome in the box. I might have to do more of these big scale cars in the future. All the detail looks great, and the extra detailing wires and mesh screens for the intake trumpets look very handy too. I also got a few sheets of bare metal foil to cover the chassis in. Looking forward to starting it.......
