As I sit here sipping my mint julep (actually, it's Super Chill soda, 50-50 mix of cola and fruit punch) and gaze out at the increasingly frigid landscape of Northwest Illinois, I have decided that the perfect antidote to the depths of winter will be a visit to a warmer clime. So I'm going to spend my evenings during the depths of winter down South, and I invite you to join me.
Southern Fried Group Build
Subjects: All
Periods: All
Proposed start date: 1 January 06
Proposed finish date: 1 June 06
Sole requirement: Your model must have a connection to the American South. For now I'm defining "The South" as the states of the Confederacy, but if anyone wants to build something from Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland or West Virginia, I have no objection.
As far as badges go, I can probably put together a generic badge in the next few days, but if you want a badge with your particular subject, go nuts!
Alright y'all, who's in on this one and what are y'all building?
Edit: 5 November
Here's the generic badge for the build.
Here's the lineup so far (updated 23 October):
cdclukey-- Lindberg
Robert E. Lee steamboat
rebelreenactor-- Confederate figure dio or CSS
Virginia
roadkill_275-- In, but still waiting for the subject
Chaparral 2F-- Jim Hall's Chaparral 2F race car in 1/24
Edit: 23 October
If you have any doubt in your mind about whether a subject falls under the "Southern connection" rule, read on. If not, don't bother.
To clarify, if your subject qualifies for any of the following, it can be in the build. If anybody comes up with any other connections to the South they feel are legitimate, let me know and I'll probably include them.
1. Served the Confederacy
2. Served a Southern state after the Civil War, such as a plane with ANG markings.
3. Is named after a Southern state or city (examples: USS
Missouri, USS
Galveston or NS
Savannah)
4. Has some other Southern reference in its name (such as the B-17's "9 Yanks and a Rebel" and "Memphis Belle")
5. Is or was stationed/based in the South (such as a plane stationed at Barksdale AFB or MCAS Cherry Point or a Mississippi riverboat)
6. Was built or designed by a Southerner
7. Was driven, conned, flown, crewed or commanded by a Southerner
8. Was named after a Southerner (such as USS
Patrick Henry or the M3 Lee tank)
I've used mostly military examples, but civilian stuff is great, too. For example, NASCAR subjects qualify and then some. For another example, if you build a Chevy Corvette, the real thing was made in Bowling Green, KY.
Please note that there is an exception to the "stationed in the South" angle: Union Civil War subjects that operated in the South are only eligible if they're in a diorama with something Southern. For example, an ironclad that was under Farragut at Mobile would be out, but USS
Monitor would be kosher if she were in a dio of her famous battle with CSS
Virginia.
