The Great Flanker Group Build - Now until 2010??
Posted by blkhwkmatt on Monday, December 19, 2005 4:10 PM

I have long been a fan of the Su-27 and all it's variants. So I am wondering if anyone would be interested in a Group Build?

Here are the basic rules: (the rest we'll make up as we go!)
     1.  Must be one of the many Su-27 variants  in service with any nation or a "What if" scheme
to include the Su-47 Berkut.

     2.  Any scale, AM, scratchbuilding, and Photo Etch are ok, so is OOB.

     3.  Can be built in conjunction with another group build, project or anything.

     4.  Have FUN and post your pictures!!!!Smile [:)]

A Group Build Badge will be designed at a later date, and I am open to any and all design suggestions!!!!

Tentative dates: start date: Sept '06       end date: TBD

The List
Blkhwkmatt:        1/72 Su-27 Flanker B(RoG), Su-47 Berkut(Italeri), Su-37 (Zevsda)
                          1/48 Su-27B(possibly with a conversion to Su-33)
ygmodeler4:        Undecided
Osher:
1/48 Zhengdefu SU-35 (on hold)
rudy_102:            Italeri Su-27

Pruz:                  Trumpeter 1/32 Su-27 converted to SKM config as seen at the '05 Paris Airshow
SoD Stich:          Hobbycraft 1/48 Su-27, PRU markings

Thunderbolt379    Encore Su-27, 30  Possible Su-37 (Zevsda)

Seeing that this Idea created no ripples in this pond it is formally canceled until further notice, or until I get that wild hair up my Censored [censored] to try it again!!

Happy New year and good luck on all your modeling adventures!!!

Ok all, just testing the waters once again.  I will be willing to oversee this Group Build, with the above stated guidelines, if anyone is interested!! I think that the timeframe should be September 1, 2006 until July 1, 2007.  That should allow all of us plenty of time to see to our other commitments, modeling and otherwise.

If you would be interested just let me know!!  Big Smile [:D]

I'm interested.

I need to get money and a few other GB's out of the way but if this thing starts I'd be willing to jump in.

Count me in!  Not sure which kit yet.  Probably the Zhengdefu SU-35 in 1/48.  OK, I know it's a pretty poor kit, with an even poorer conversion to SU-35 standard, but it's one of those itchy kits that just needs to be done, so it's done, else it just sits there, as a challenge!  Busy for now, but a 1st September start is good for me, probably have time in mid to late September.

Pruz,

Welcome to the build, I wish that I had the space available for a 1/32 Flanker!!  I saw the bird that you are talking about in person at the Paris Airshow, very impressive, and very large!!!Big Smile [:D]

I'll add you to the list up top, and please post some progress pics!!

To all, I am thinking about extending the ending date to somewhere in the distant future, so maybe that will help to attract some more participants!!

Count me in, too! I just started a Hobbycraft 1/48th Su-27, so the timing should be about right; I'll post some pics. It'll be OOB (I haven't graduated to anything more complicated!), so don't get your hopes up. I plan on painting it in PRC colors (it's easier!).

SoD Stitch,

Welcome to the build, and OOB is quite alright, most of my kits are still that way, built more for fun than anything else.  Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Osher, Godspeed and a safe return, who knows, this GB might still be going on when you return!!!

Here is a shot of the scheme that I'll be trying to duplicate on my 1/72 flanker.  The RoG boxing is a rebox( I believe) of the Hasa kit down to the decals.  This is the second option that you are given.

I'll post some WIP pics soon, just gotta upload them to photobucket.Big Smile [:D]

I really have the flanker bug, however I have a F-15E that is staring me in the face every time that I get the chance to even look at my woorkbench, which hasnt been that often as of late.

Oh and, BUMP!!!!!

Anyone out there making any progress?

Hi Matt,

Just noticed this group build -- I have the Encore Su-27 and Su-35 kits, which will probably be a real challenge, I remember they have raised panel lines which will need doctoring. I also have the Zvezda Su-30 with antishipping load, which would be quite a colorful job. As the time period is so relaxed I see no reason why I couldn't tackle one for this effort, if you'll have me aboard. The Flanker is truly one of the most spectacular planes there's ever been.

(Currently building a Fw 190 for the Farewell Airfix GB.)

Cheers,

TB379

Here's where I'm at with my Su-27; not very far, I know, but I'm getting there!

I painted the rear fuselage over the engines, but I wasn't happy with the results, so now I gotta strip it; I'll post some more pictures when I'm happy with the results.

Can anyone recommend a good color match for the Su-27 pit? On the newer models it's a kind of turquoisey-bluey color, not the same as the pale blue of the other interior areas. There's a pic from this helpful site here

Cheers,

Al

Hi Al,

What about Testor Model Master TS2135 Modern Russian Interior Blue/Green? If the shade used in Flankers is anything like the aquamarine in the office of the MiG-23, it should be a fair match.

Cheers,

I would agree with TB379, the TS 2135 color should be a fair match for that lovely cockpit color.  As I was glancing through the photos on the page that you linked to, I also noticed that one of the cockpit photos showed the instrument panel in a light grey color.  So you might have to do a bit more research on sites like that one for the color found in the pit on your bird.

Looks to me like a good start, I have dug mine out of the box that it was in for the move, now I need to snap some more photos of it.  I would say that you are almost as far along as I have been for the better part of a year.

Thanks for your help matt and TB! I will get hold of some ASAP.

Thanks matt for also extending the life of this GB. The Flanker is a fabulous plane and the more people can join in the better we can do it justice!

For reference: the SKM is definitely the bluey-green pit with two large MFDs (instead of the steam driven instruments with one small MFD of the standard Flanker B). The IR sensor on the front of the canopy is also offset to the right hand side, not central as with earlier variants.

Enjoy! Cheers,Make a Toast [#toast]
