Mad Spitfire Weekend
Posted by osher on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 1:28 PM
The Airfix Spitfire, whilst not the very first kit available, is possibly the most important for starting our hobby.  The first kits were the Frog kits, whilst the first 2 Airfix kits were of ships.  However, things really took off, excuse the pun, with the Airfix kit of 1955.

I'd like to propose a celebratory Mad Spitfire Weekend.  Starting Good Friday, the 14th April, at 2pm GMT (9am in New York), and finishing Sunday 16th April at 5pm.

The kit is to be the 1/72 Airfix Mk.1a Spitfire.  Sadly, the original mould was altered to be a Mk.IX, so the current Mk.1 is a re-issue.  It is this mould which also formed the basis for the celebratory Airfix kit of the Spitfire, in a bag, in blue plastic.  Of course, it's not possible to now have the packing exactly as it was then, what with bar codes, and safety notices, but still, it's a nice effort.

The kit itself is easy to put together, but there are some fit problems.  You'll need filler for underside of the fuselage, and along the top of the engine cover, plus at the wing roots.  No seat belts, of course, or instruments, details etc for the cockpit.  However, it is reckoned to be the most accurate, in terms of the overall shape of the main planes, fuselage, etc.

No restrictions (except on choice of kit), and you can throw as much AM stuff as you like at it.  Just bear in mind that you've only got 2 days and 3 hours!

On the GB:
Osher  - 1/72 Airfix Spitfire Mk.Ia
T_Terrific - 1/72 Tamiya Spitfire Mk.V
Razordws - 1/72 Airfix Spitfire Mk. TBC

If you want some of us "not from the UK" to be included in this, thus to broaden your likelyhood of getting numerous participants, I suggest that you might lift your "choice of kit" restriction.

I mean, the Tamiya 1/72 Spitfire Mk V is more common over here "accross the pond" then your Airfix.

If this post was intended for "Limey's only" pardon my intrusion.Confused [%-)]

I didn't realise that the Airfix 1/72 Spit is not readily available in America.  I was thinking of this as a single kit mad weekend, but if other's want to include other kits, sure!  However, shall we leave it as 1/72?

If you wish........

I shelved my 1/72 for a Hasegawa 1/32, but it is easily resurrectible Smile [:)]

Frankly, a 1/72 scale anything is easier to build then either my 1/48,1/32,or 1/24 kits I have in Spitfires.

What I decided to shelve it for was to locate some American Spitfire decals first, but for the occasion I am willing to forego that.Wink [;)]

If you can get one or two more Osher I will join in. I just bought a battle of britain decal set and my LHS is well stocked with old airfix kits. Don't know about the US but there is no problem finding airfix kits in Canada. I'm sure I could find an old spitfire kit out there somewhere. I'll just have to check on the weekend in question to see if I'm available.

OK, let's see if we can get some more onboard!  It would be nice to stick to the Airfix 1/72 Spitfire mk.1, but any Spitfire will do in the absence of this one.
