pearl harbor 2006 cancelled
Posted by fightnjoe on Friday, February 24, 2006 9:53 PM
after last years build i was to be honest very humbled by all the fantastic builds.  i was very grateful that i was allowed the opportunity to host it.  i would like to do the same this year.  i propose a bit less time than last year but that is for discussion.  i propose sept 7 to dec 7 as the time frame.  any subject involved in the attack.  civilian or military.  japanese or american.

how do you feel about this?

Hi Joe, How is everthing?

I'm in, this time I'll try a Japanese aircraft and I should, "should", be able to complete it in that time frame.

Hi Joe.  I responded over on LEM as well.  Like I said, this is a ways off, but if things work out I'll be in.  Will probably do the recent Sword 1/32 P-36 "Pearl Harbor Defender" kit.

david awesome.

now for my favorite part.  some history.

--spring 1940 the us navy moves the pacific fleets main base from san diego to pearl harbor hawaii.  the japanese see this as a threat to its expansionistic ideas.

-november 12 1940 the british attack and disable half the italian fleet at taranto.  the attack is noticed by the japanese.

-jan 7 1941 adm yamamoto writes to r/adm oikawa suggesting a plan that the japanese should strike at the pearl harbor base to eliminate the threat of the us navy to japanese plans in french indochina.

-jan 27 1941 adm yamamoto presents his plan to onishi aboard the nagato.  the problem with torpedos diving too deep puts the plan off.

-mid feb onishi presents the plan to comander minoru genda.  here is when the plan begins to actually take shape.  the plan is changed to a strike and return rather than a one way attack.  genda is given the responsibility of taking the suggestion and working it into a full blown operational plan of attack.

-late feb 1941 genda presents his findings in a ten part plan.  part ten is removed.  part ten is an outline for the landing of an invasion force on the hawaiian islands.

-march 27 1941 takeo yoshikawa arrives in hawaii.  he is responsible for gathering intellegence on the fleet and military strength in hawaii.

more to follow.

Go ahead and count me in! I have absolutely no clue what I'll build, though... maybe I'll go overboard and buy myself another Hasegawa 1:48 D3A1... Mine right now is in the green/gray scheme, It'd be nice to have an overall gray one to go along with it... Or maybe a B5N2 in 1:48 (don't have one of those yet). anyway, sounds like a great build!

-Josh

Current Builds: If I were to list everything I have in progress, it'd take way too long! Some notable inclusions:

Hasegawa 1:48 KI-84

Tamiya 1:48 P-51D (in Iwo Jima long-range escort markings)

4 (yes, four) Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1s (1x -1D, 1x -1A, and 2x -1s)

Joe, if you'll let me in I would like to try this one. Maybe if life quits intruding into my modeling time I'll actually get a kit finished.

I'd like to do a P-39 but I'm not sure if there were any in service at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack.  I've seen conflicting information on the web.  Can anyone confirm or deny?  Otherwise, I'll build a P-40B.

Scott, What particular branch of the military would you be wanting to do? From the top of my head, the US Army planes that were there, were the A-20B, B-17C, D, E, B-18A, B, B-24A (just one of these there and it was destroyed), C-39A, C-40A, P-26A, B, P-35A, P-36A, D, P-40B, C, T-6C and AT-12 ( a version of the P-35, there were at least two there). There were also several observation types there including the O-47. I have one reference of there being a few P-43s there but can't confirm or deny this. The B-24 was staging through Hickam AB on a secret reconnaisance mission to spy on the Japanese activities around their opersting areas in the western Pacific. The P-26s & P-35s had been phased out of front line service, but a few were still around being used as squadron hacks. The P-36s were also being phased out in favor of the P-40s. There is also a possibility of there being a few B-25s at Hickam. The time frame is right and two of the Bomb Squadron (Light) were supposed to have started conversion to the type from B-18s in November, 1941, but I have two sources that say that that hadn't started yet at the time of the attack. I'll post a more comprehensive list next weekend (if Joe wants me too) after I check my lists at home. I'll even be able to list it by Type, Unit, Base. Same with the USN/USMC aviation assets.

Cool, thanks for all the info gentlemen.  I have the Trumpeter P-40B, but I'm building that one for the Allied Aces GB.  I'm going to have to think about this..... might have to build another P-40B, are there any decent ones in 1/48 scale?  Otherwise I'll do another 1/32... the price isn't too bad on that kit.  I picked my first one up for $23.95 on sale at my LHS, I was very tempted to grab 2 of them, wish I had now  LOL

For the money the RM P-40B in 1/48 isn't too bad. There are AM decals for a PH build, amd there is resin and PE details available. I've got one that I'm thinking about committing to this build, but I want to make a run to the LHS (found a new one that I really like!!) and seeing whats available there. Add a B-12 and a C-33 to the list above.

kevin i am sure your list is the same as mine.  go for it.  i have a couple of lists for the units.

the trump b is a fine one.  that is the one i am going to do.  the 1/32 that is.  it has one scheme for number 62 from 18 pg.  i have the resin pit for it.  the revell kit is a great one to use also.  add a am pit and you are in buisness as the kit pit is more of a later version.

Trumpeter does make a good P-40B kit in 1/48 scale as well.  I think it only has RAF markings but not sure since I went with a P-40E from hasegawa instead for the flying tigers.

Actually, on second thought, put me down for the Monogram P-40B. I don't feel like shelling out 20-30 bucks for a Hasegawa kit, and the P-40 'll only cost me $8! I'll probably do it as either Welch or Taylor's bird, or maybe I'll get two and do both!

Ok, It's official.  I picked up the Special Hobby 1/32 P-36A "Pearl Harbor Defender" from High Sierra Models today and will build it as number 86 flown by Lt. Rasmussen who was credited with shooting a Japanese aircraft on that fateful day.  Big Smile [:D]  Cool [8D]

From just looking at the parts and instructions the P-36 looks very nice.  Seems like a good quality kit.  The true test though will be when it's time to mate up the seams.  Wink [;)]
