Revell-Monogram 1/48 P-38 GB

I've heard a lot of bad things about this kit and it doesn't look good as I look at it.  But my daughter bought it for me, and now I'm stuck with having to build it for her.  Anyone with me?  Gotta be this kit but you can add stuff if you really want to torture yourself.  Misery loves company, so come on, it's only like a $10 kit.  :)  I love my daughter, but I need some help here.  I think I can talk her into letting me put it off for a month  or so while I finish a couple of other builds.  How about a May 1, 2006 start?

This one is on my "to do" list but I just don't have any time for the next 6 months or so, I've committed my self to way more GBs than I have time.Sad [:(]  I built it many years ago and seem to remember that it actually wasn't that bad.  But then again I was 12 and back then I wasn't too concerned with seems matching correctly and the like Wink [;)].

You did a great job with yours TAdan.  I tried to build it a long time ago when I first started modeling and had a hard time with it.  But most of that was probably due to the fact that I wasn't very good.  I'm not much better now, but I think I've learned some tricks since then.  I had also heard from others it was a tough kit.  There doesn't seem to be much interest in this subject, so I'll probably go ahead and throw it together unless I can find another GB to get it into.

TryingtoModel, I just checked and there are no P-38s being built for the Allied Aces GB, I know you're doing a P-51 but if you wanted to do two builds, it wouldn't be bad, infact I've seen numerous people do multiple builds, I did two for the Canadian GB, Rick I think has done three for the BoG GB. I think the decals with the kit are for McDonald who would definitely quailify.Big Smile [:D]

The kit includes decals to build U.S. Ace Richard Bong's P-38. That is how I finished mine. I did not realize the GB was going on when I built mine though :-D

Just starting mine, but I am doing the conversion that the kit has to make it a two seat "M" model.  The first thing that I was reminded of the thick, hard plastic of Monogram.  Also, the clear glass appears to be more brital )sp?) that others.

If you haven't started yet, all I can say is GO SLOW. Sleepy [|)]  This is a typical Monogram kit Shock [:O] in that if you take some extra time (and putty, and sanding, and extra $$$ for the resin and photo etched); you can get a good looking plane.  Just be patient with the kit; it being a Monogram, you need to work with it slowly. Banged Head [banghead]  Don't try to set any speed building records with it. Sleepy [|)]  Since it is to be built for your daughter, make it a "labor of love".

I personally am not wild Disapprove [V] about the decals that came with the kit.  I would recommend looking for a new set from one of the usual suspects.  Thumbs Up [tup]  Since you said that you are making this for your daughter, get her involved in the decal selection.  You might wind up with some crazy Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] ideas from her.  Who is to say that someone would not have painted a P-38 in lemon yellow for the race circuit?  Or she might surprise you, and get into the research of the plane, and might, gasp, like history!Shock [:O]

I will post some photos here as I get better progress done on mine.

If it has Bong's decals it would qualify for the South Pacific GB.... but I kinda like the idea of the lemon yellow P-38.. everyone does "normal" kits.. I'd like to see more Pink Kates (as seen in the aircraft section) and Lemon Yellow P-38's now and then!!!

The night fighter variant might also fit the Interceptor GB... I think we only have one prop right now.  Plus I've never seen that variant built up so I have my own motives.

Hi mph34,

After the intial lack of interest and the fact that I commited myself to a few other GB's since, I figured I might build it for the Allied Aces GB if I have time after building the P-51 I originally picked for that GB.  If you want to have a GB for the P-38, I'll build mine with you, but it may be a couple of months before I could start.

I also meant to add that my daughter has completely forgotten about the plane, lol.  We have been busy with other project, so no, I'm not neglecting her.  Smile [:)]  I'll still include her when the time comes, but she has been having fun with her brother putting together old snap-tite kits.

Glad to hear that your daughter is having fun doing something "boy-ish".  My daughter can be the same way. Smile [:)]  I agree, with all of the other GB going on, let's put this one on hold till maybe come fall/winter time.

One of us can get the 'motivation' to start it up then. Smile [:)]

There's a great review and build-up of this kit here.

I have this kit too. Looking at it, I don't think it could take any more work than the Glencoe MB-2 I just finished -- and probably would take significantly less.

Regards,

-Drew

A fall GB sounds good to me!  I'm game.  I'll save the kit for then.
