WWII "what if" birds GB Idea

WWII "What if" birds Group Build

Start:  5/01/06  end:  11/01/06

Hey all,
Been thinking about this concept. See what you all think. A GB with these ideas could produce some interesting stuff. If nothing else, it would be fun to produce your own paint scheme and modifications.

* Any fighter, bomber or recon used or not used in WWII. Thumbs Up [tup]

* Make up a new paint scheme for your bird. Something you may feel would have been "better" or more functional or just plain looks cooler.Cool [8D]

* Switch your bird to a different theater than it participated in originally. Then, paint accordingly (maybe a carrier based p-40 with tri color pacific scheme?)Wow!! [wow]

* Switch your bird to either Allied or Axis and paint accordingly (what would a p-40 look like if the Luftwaffe got ahold of some to use)Disapprove [V]

* Modify the bird if you want with additional parts or weaponsWink [;)]

* Keep your idea or plan for your plane a surprise. You can then explain when you reveal your build : Question [?]

Participants:

Wulf:  Tamiya 1:48 F4U Corsair (completed pg. 4)
Panzerwulff :  "Birdcage" Corsair - Tamiya 1:48 (completed pg. 4)

Jaypack:  Question [?]

rudy_102:  AMT Tigercat

What is your time frame for this build?

The Germans did get their hands on some B-17s and I have seen some of the repainted birds in photos.  But what about a B-29?  Now that might be fun... Mischief [:-,]

The Italians got a P-38 I know flying again and used it against some of our bomber formations.  Maybe an Italian Me-262?  You think Germany would have shared?Mischief [:-,]

If I can't find any unit history on one of the three units that I have found that flew the P-38M (two seat night fighter) for the Pacific GB, maybe I will move that plane over to this one....

I can't really commit to another build right now, but this one does sound interesting.  If I did it, I'd have to take my favorite WWII warbird, the Corsair, and put it in an Atlantic paint scheme, AND leave it in Marine markings.  That'd fit the "what-if' aspect pretty well, I think.

Always could add a couple of tank-killer gunpods to it, too...

A day in the Corps is like a day on the farm; every meal is a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade... The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy? Yeah...The Men's Department.

It would be interesting to see some 'what if' USAAF jets in WW2 markings. Take an F-80 (P-80) and basically do a Luftwaffe '46 into a USAAF '46.

Cool idea.

I 'll see what kind of response this idea gets and then set a start and end date. I'll probably give a fair amount of time since others are commited to other GB's.

Put me down for a Me-262.  I am leaning towards giving it to the Italians (I like their desert coloring).

Have you set the time frame for this build yet?

Let's go ahead and do this. I'll set the dates and hook us up with a badge for this GB. I'll post the dates on my original thread. Anyone else may join whenever.

Hey PanzerWulff....

Do you know where I might find a photo or two of an example showing the "smoke ring" cammo?

Otherwise I am thinking of using the Italian "Spinich & Sand" cammo.

I am leaning towards building a 1/48th scale Me-262

How about "WWII - What Ifs" with a globe as a background?

As I research the cammo scheme for the Me-262; 1/48th scale, I got another inspiration......

A Ju-87/G-2 flying for Japan,  1/72nd scale.  Will have fun with the cammo on that.  Big Smile [:D]

By the way, any bonus points if we make our own 'what if' history to go with the plane(s) that we do? Question [?]

mph,

So are you gonna do the 1:48 262? If you are, I'll add it to the head thread.

1/48th scale for the Me-262, I want to use the Tamiya Kit (my birthday is comingBig Smile [:D])

I have an old Revel 1/72 scale Ju-87-G-2 that I will also build and turn into a IJA attack plane, probably in CBI theatre....

Thanks mph....

Also, I've added a new rule:  Don't reveal what you will do with your plane. Keep it a surprise and you can explain when you present your build. Sound good?

I guess I'll have to be in on this one...

I might rebuild one of my old 1:72 or 1:48 kits I have laying around...

-Josh

Current Builds: If I were to list everything I have in progress, it'd take way too long! Some notable inclusions:

Hasegawa 1:48 KI-84

Tamiya 1:48 P-51D (in Iwo Jima long-range escort markings)

4 (yes, four) Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1s (1x -1D, 1x -1A, and 2x -1s)

OK guys, I need some input here. I'm kinda stumped as what to do for this GB. I'm leaning towards a WWII bird with a different theater scheme. Any ideas? Banged Head [banghead]

What is your favorite plane?  Now, what is your favorite theater?  Did the plane fight in that theater?  If not, there you go.  OR, maybe take your favorite plane, and it's main theater, but have it flying for the other side.... My 2 cents [2c]

Give the Axis a Long Range Heavy Bomber?  Give the USA a Stuka?  Have fun!

Panzerwullf:  Be sure to post some progress pics! But remember not to give your final idea away. I think we all can post progress pics along the way. It would be nice to see some of the offices, construction, etc.

Jaypack:  Have you decided what you're going to build?  Let me know....

Also, I really don't know 'how' to create a badge from scratch. If someone wants to volunteer to do itBig Smile [:D] that would be great. Any idea is cool with me. Then, we can just download them to our sig. Thanks
