The Airfix Welcome Back GB from Jan 07 to Dec 07
Posted by osher on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 7:06 AM

Yes, 2007 we welcome back Airfix!  New kits include a Nimrod, a Canberra, and, er, well, other stuff too.  Hornby have taken over Airfix, are moving the headquarters to their own site, in Margate, Kent, and have out-sourced production to China.

There is a rumour that the only reason that Hornby bought Airfix (and Humbrol) was due to the Airfix Farewell GB Smile [:)], so let's all jump in, and build another Airfix kit, and remind ourselves what's so good (and, not so good), about possibly the oldest surviving kit manufacturer.

This GB is for any kit marketed under the Airfix name (including Arii, Trumpeter, etc kit that Airfix sold under their name), from trains, figures, space, aircraft, birds, sci-fi, buildings, cars, tanks, to just about anything else that takes your imagination. If you want to start now, well, I do say that it can be already started...(just don't finish before the start date!)

Badge:

Rules (almost the same as the Farewell build):

1. Must be sold as an Airfix kit, or be from an original Airfix mould.
2. OOB, bar ariels, rigging, decals, and seatbelts (in other words, plastic stays the same)
3. Can be combined with any other GB
4. Kit can be already started
5. Any kit, any scale
6. Make it a celebration of the wonderful Airfix company!
7. If possible, a scan of the box art

A Spitfire Jon?  I'm surprised!Cool [8D]

Hey Dave, cool, let me know!

Glad to have you two onboard!  Naturally I'm on, with a 1/72 Spitfire, one of the special 50th anniversary edition ones.  As I'm off a few days into the new year (to the Caribbean for 2 years, hence, without modelling), I'll be starting it before the start date (but finishing during the build)

Let me see...sun, sand, sea, gorgeous women, hot weather, new enviroment, chance to explore, and earning twice what I would in England.  That or modelling due to foul weather (is that why modelling was born in England, because of the weather?)?  Hmmm, tough choice...

Hi Osher,

Count me in, I'll be there like a shot! Not sure what I'll build yet, I'll review my stash and see if I can run to that Spitfire 24 I've been lusting after...

I picked up some RLM 83 today for my Farewell subject, I still have hopes of getting the little feller done by year's end.

PanzerWulff's MTB set me thinking -- there was discussion on these boards not long ago of the Airfix (?) Air Sea Rescue Launch kit, and I may be of help on that subject, as I photographed the preserved ASR boats at the RAF Museum, Hendon, in London, a couple of weeks ago, during my all-day visit to the museum. The weather was grey and the light poor, but I got four detail shots of the boats in external storage there. If anyone wanted to tackle that subject, I could make the photos available.

Cheers,

TB379

Hey Osher, here we go again. I was wondering when this GB would pop up. Glad to hear all the great news about Airfix and eagerly looking forward to the new year and new items from the new makeover of Airfix. I started a Spitfire Mk V/ Seafire MkIII but had to stop due to other commitments on other GB. I will not be able to work on it until Jan anyway so I will be doing it as a Seafire MKIII. Good to be building with you guy's again. Steve.

Hmmm... I shook the stash pile and the only thing to fall out with the airfix name on it was a Do 217 E/J with a couple of cracked canopies.  Not sure I'll be into building that one for awhile but put me down for it anyway.  I may have to find something else to inspire me.

Count me in as well. I have a Airfix 1/48 DH Mosquito FB VI that should fit the bill. Will post a photo of the box soon, it is a little large to scan. Mike

Hmmm...  I didn't realize that my kit was the 'TOP SECRET CRACKED CANOPY" version.  It might be a collector's item! Wink [;)]  Thanks for pointing that out Osher.

Well, I did the farewell GB, I guess its my moral obligation as an Airfix fan to do the welcome back GB also.  Besides, sounds like fun.  Count me in for something a little more modern kit-wise this time, a Seafire FR.46, though it may be a month or two before I start while I clean off the bench.

Hi PanzerWulff, I'll sort out those photos of the ASR Launch for you and get them up at PhotoBucket (it'll be an adventure, my first image posting!) Glad to be of help! The Fw 190 is going together well, it really is one of Airfix's better classic kits, and the molds have really aged well -- barely any flash, and the bits line up real close. I must take a dive at it and get the beast done. I've lots in my stash but nothing that begs to be built just now, at least nothing I've got room to store... The C-130 in New Zealand markings would be a great build, but where to put it until I have a display case has me beat! It's not just space, either -- dust is the modellers worst enemy, and I'm paranoid about longterm open storage spoiling the finish we work so hard to acheive. You can dust them off, but eventually dust will find its way into the paintwork, especially matt finishes. I'll go for something a bit smaller -- we'll see what comes along. I was considering the U-2 they released, probably Italeri in origin (I'm guessing), with unusual markings, but in the weeks I was away in England my closest outlet seems to have (finally) a serious run on Airfix. Cheers, TB379

Hi,

put me down for this GB. I've already signed up for the 'Once were Warriors' GB using the BBMF boxed set I got for last Xmas, so I might as well join this GB as well since it is 3 kits. I won't be able to start the build until the summer though.

The set consists of Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster in 1/72. I'll build all 3.

Just for something different, I'll do their 54mm 1776 British Grenadier. I don't think that mold has seen the light of day for a decade or two. I've actually started it, will post a picture soon.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

Got a digital camera for Christmas and still need to post a pic of the box top, so here goes:

1/48 scale Seafire FR. 46/47.  This is one of Airfix's more modern kits, and most reviews I have found of it have been generally positive.  I'm going with the FR46 mainly because I don't think the FR47's camo scheme is as cool as the FR46, and the FR47s chin intake spoils the planes beautiful lines somewhat.  And darn it, thats what its all about -- looking cool on the shelf Wink [;)]!!

Looking forward to building with you guys.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Well, I stuck my foot in my mouth and said I would build a 1/72 IL-28 Beagle for the Fairwell GB and didn't even get it started.  How about I try to redeem myself and get it built for the Welcom Back GB?
