2008 Airliner Group Build

I would love to join also..

But I guess I should ask. Are we allowed to resurect kits that were started and shelved, or does it have to be a fresh kit?..

I have a half built Revell 1/144 A380 that I will do in Qantas markings, and I also have a Revell 1/144 747-400 to be done in JAL markings..

Thanks, the January start is also a bonus as I have a whole heap of stuff to do before then.. But they have been sitting in the big box with about 50 other projects wanting to be re-done and completed..

I've had a build in progress posted in the Aircraft section for several days now, of the 737-200 kitbash I'm currently doing .   I also posted an easy scratchbuilt fix to the CFM engine nacells on the Revell 737NG, but again, spider webs have filled the rooms that they're in.

I know a year seems like plenty of time to build a kit... But, alas there never seems to be enough time!

I will endeavour to strategize, synergize and create a turn-key airplane...Sorry folks, just had to get back into that Boeing speak in preparation for this journey  !

Frank, I know how you feel mate.. I dont know why it is with Airliners, but there is a cult following out there for them, and in saying that, people like taking pictures of them. But they dont like building them?.. Its a strange one for me..

I have always loved building them, and collect everything from kits to diacast display models. But as I enjoy building many different subjects, sometimes the Airliners take a back seat at times..

I saw the build you are working on and was impressed with what you have done so far.. I had planned to do a full detailed version of the A380, but I sort of lost interest and other priorities took over. It is the same with the 747-400 I was building, and so thats why they have sat in a box for so long.. I would suggest you add the kit you are doing to the group build, as I am sure if mine are already started, then I guess you fit in there as well..

I'm excited about this one. The Caravelle has always been a favorite of mine- dates me I guess. When I was a kid we flew all over on employee passes, Convair 440's, Caravelles, Viscounts and DC-4/6s. Dad recruited engineers to UAL with promises to work in the Concorde program, which he headed at UAL.

Someones gotta do a what-if Concorde. There was a great story on that a while back (sorry aaron) that is still available. I think it was Continental had their colors on one side and BA on the other, in reality. Pan Am, UAL, Delta all had mock-up schemes. JAL, Royal Saudia.

Yes, you can sign me up. My build will be a Revell 737-800, kitbashed to a "-900" in a "down & dirty" configuration with deflected Spoilers and Reverse Thrusters engaged (no aftermaket accessories will be used). It will be mounted something like this:

(I know that's an -800, but it's the correct pose)

Meanwhile, I will continue coverage of my current build and post pictures and illustrations of my progress, in the event they may be of use to someone, if that's okay?

Also, please feel free to post stuff from your build here. It's funny that you should say you're doing it in case it might help somebody, and then you post that landing light pic, which is just what I needed to solve a problem with my two 707s.

Aaron, could you confirm for me that your 767 is going to be in Australian Airlines colors? I'm not aware of the Aussie Government/military having any 767s, but I could very easily be wrong.

BTW...if it is AA that's a great choice. Their livery was just gorgeous.

Real looking landing lights r e a l l y make a difference in the overall appearance! I know your '707' will like 'em too!

I haven't decided if the -900 will be a Continental bird or not... trying to get that thin, fragile gold decal all the way around the model in a straight line, without breaking into pieces, still spawns nightmares!!

Here's some progress shots... I still have to do the rivet lines (accomplished with a selection of metal gears from and old wind-up pocket watch), then maybe I can finally get the first coat of slick stuff on.

It sure sounds like there's going to be a nice selection of Airliners in this GB!      I'm looking forward to it!     

*Jeaton, and any others who were part of the "General Aviation GB":  I apologize for disappearing halfway through that.... I got away from modeling there for a while when the wife and I found ourselves dealing with a bout of "Empty Nest Syndrome" and I just kind put everything up.     The Cap20 is probably within a couple days being finished, but I just haven't picked it back up.      After we got home our x-country vacation in September, I felt refreshed so I bought one of the Revell B738's and built it after the one we flew across on... and that project helped get my mind right again!      I saw your BEAUTIFUL Staggerwing built before I disappeared, and the others that were completed!   Very inspiring!

Frank, I also know your feeling when you lose interest in this hobby at times.. I basically went most of this year, starting Nov 06.. I didnt touch a thing over the Xmas break and then only picked up a kit about 2 months ago.. But its always good to rattle the plastic after a lay off and get the juices flowing again..

Frank, glad to see you are back, glad you liked the Staggerwing.  Sounds like you and your wife went on a nice adventure.  We had an empty nest for awhile, but now my mother in law lives with us and we play with the grandkids a lot, so it didn't last long.

There is a pretty active airline newsgroup on Yahoo, AMD or Airliner Modeling Digest.  Quite a few model builders there and lots of conversation at times.  Who knows, maybe general aviation and airliners are the wave of the future!

Although it may be a little while before I can begin on this GB, I thought I would go up stairs and see if I could find the box with the started kits that I will re-do for this build, and I was surprised with what I found..

I must have been drunk or in a hurry when I was building these two, and so will definately need to re-do them.. For starters, the QANTAS A380 will have a completely different kangaroo logo when it first fly's on the tail and the paint is what I would describe as bad.. So it will be re-sanded and re-done.. The JAL 747-400 has a big hole in the tail from putty being spilled on it and melting through, and the home made decals I made for it have changed colour.. So it will also be re-done..

The problem now is, that I will need to get a new set of window and door , as well as cockpit decals for both of them...

Hey, here's a question related to Frank's landing light technique that I hope one of you can answer.

I'm looking at using household aluminum foil to simulate at least some of the metal on my Braniff and Pan Am builds. Though the Microscale adhesive is pretty inexpensive, the hobby shop here in town doesn't carry it, so I'd have to take a road trip or pay shipping, and I'm considering materials close at hand.

Would spray adhesive or Future work for this task? If so, should they be applied to the foil, or to the surface of the model?
