Kinda new to the forums and have questions on GB's

As for fermented beverages, 64 what you describe is "pruno", not torpedo juice. Torpedo juice is just that- the alcohol used as fuel by torpedoes.

And Stik, don't ever buy beer on steep discount. It usually means it sat in a boxcar in Tucson in June for a week...

That can go either way- in distilled spirits, yes age is supposed improve the drink. In beers and ales, it is not. I think most of us here have opeend that cold one that was not as good as it should have been because it sat for too long...

Stik: I was under the impression, when alcohol was involved, the older the better.  which would explain the taste of the "torpedo juice" that one of my army buddies (his father had been a navy man) made using canned fruit rations, stolen yeast and substances unknown.......

I hope their liquor or fermented beverage of choice is more current ;-)

Welcome bones!  Looks like you got the answers to your questions.  I will reiterate that GB's are great ways to make friends and learn a ton of tips and tricks.  That's the whole purpose of this forum and for GB's.  I lurked around here for some time because I didn't feel I could "measure up" to the quality I was seeing here.  But once I jumped in, man, the folks here are awesome!!  You don't even have to ask a direct question, these guys and gals are more than willing to share their wealth of knowledge.  There is no doubt I have learned a TON of things since joining the forum.  It's also great for reviews of kits!  Just ask about a kit you have or are thinking of getting, and somebody here has it or has built it and you can see if you really want to get it or not.  Bottom line, great group of folks here!  I would advise to be careful with the GB's!  They are addicting!  

All that is left now is...to have fun! (and post pics!)

Welcome, Bones!! I see everyone has you well answered there. So, jump right in and join a GB. You'll see how it works as you go. Just be prepared to snap alot of pictures to post for Work In Progress (WIP), required in most GBs. And ask ALL the questions you need to in the GB. Learning from one another is the main point of a GB.

reference question 4. sometimes you will see GBs with an year such as SUBJECT 2013. other time it will be a number such as SUBJECT II. this may mean someone else wants to start a fresh GB or, in many cases, it means a bunch of us didn;t finish SUBJECT I so this is an opportunity to complete a project. should be an SP ARTILLERY III starting up soon.

And, it's a great way to make friends. Of the online kind, but people who follow your interests.

IMHO, courtesy and a positive attitude will carry you far. You'll see workmanship beyond your imagination, good historic knowledge, which by the way I've yet to see bad info on FSM.

FSM is the only forum for me because its moderated, and all of the folks tend to be really thoughtful, honest and considerate.

I can't add much to the previous posts except to say that I would like to see your models- and when you need to find out how to post pics, let us know!!

1.  Yes.  We're equal opportunity for all.

2.  Rarely are GB's graded or judged.  In fact, it's usually discouraged.  The badge is nothing more than a visual, uh, badge that you've participated in the GB.  The rules of when you can claim the badge vary from GB to GB.  Frankly, if I could give a word of advice...forget the badge.  I see far too many newcomers to the forums get OBSESSED with badges.  The point of the GB is to build to a common theme, learn something, have some good comraderie and HAVE FUN!  Badges should be a low priority.

3. See the rules of the particular GB to determine when.  As far as how, there are sticky's on the forums already on how to display pictures.  If they've disappeared do a quick search and you'll find a ton of good info.

4.  Sorry, but the GB police won't allow that.  Just kidding.   No one is going to disallow you from participating in another GB just because you don't finish one.  Life happens sometimes. 

5.  Yes, but I'd definitely wait till later on, much later on, when you've have some experience on the whole GB process.  It takes more work than you'd think to run one and frankly there are too many ill-thought GB's which slowly die out due to an inexperienced GB mod.

6.  HECK YES!!!!  One of the main points to a GB is the opportunity to share research, techniques, etc.  Participation is strongly encouraged.

Yep, this is only a hobby and life often gets in the way of good intentions so no one is going to get down on you for not finishing a GB but it is good manners to only sign up for GB's that you intend to follow though on.  It is also very easy to get caught up in GB fever and to sign up for more than you are able to follow through on so take it slow and easy to start. Late on when i'm not so new to this can I set up a GB ? If you have an idea for a GB put up a post and see if there is any interest.  It's that simple.  If your new you might want to do a search of past GB's to see if it's been done recently so you don't repeat it. Are you allowed to ask for help on your subject from other people during the GB?                                                                                               That's the whole idea.  The sharing of research and information, tips and techniques is what it's all about not to mention the commradery and friends that you'll make along the way.  Have fun and enjoy.  I think that is all of the questions I have for now on this .                   Thank you !                              LEE

In answer to your questions:

1.  Yes,

2.  The GB badges are usually worn by people participating in the build just for participating.  However there are some builds where owner won't want you wearing a GB badge until the build is complete.  None of the GBs I've ever been in have awarded prizes, it's more about taking part.

3.  See my answer to Question 2.  If you're asking how to show the GB Badge in your sig, there are some excellent tutorials located in this forum which will tell you haw to do that.

4.  Absolutely, remember this is about having fun, it's not life and death.

5.  You bet all you need is enough takers to make it worthwhile, so you might want to post a thread in the Armour or Aircraft forums asking how many people would be interested in an XYZ GB before you post the GB thread.

6.  People on this forum love to help out and you will not find yourself belittled as a noob if you ask lot's of questions.
