Cold War GB?
Posted by Townsy11 on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 2:44 PM

Hi all,

Would anyone be interested in a "Cold War GB"? Both Armor and A/C? with the entry requirements being that it belonged to either the USA or the USSR and served between 1955 and 1990.

I have several in my stash that would qualify...I'd be happy to be a part of this one.

What is the time frame for this Group Build?  I have several kits that would fit the bill for this GB, and I am interested.

Aggieman-I was thinking February 1st to August 1st for the dates? (maybe longer if ships are involved)

Jmart- I was actually considering doing a "all fields" GB (Armor, A/C, Ships, Subs, Heli's etc.) Is that ok for everyone?

Maybe make it longer lasting, up to a year? May encourage people to make more than one type of build? I am fine either way, was planning to start a cold war era destroyer, Charles Adams (Dragon 1:700), I can also do (down the road a few months!) a Tamiya M41 bulldog for armor... anyways, I am in either way :) thanks

I dont mind making it up to a year in length, I actually already have some badge idea's in the making.

I'd like to do it too, as it lands square in my interest wheelhouse. I can't add any models to the queue for a while though, and I'm sensitive about dropping my own builds on other peoples GB's. If you allow crossovers I'd be happy to double up my AN-12 for the Heavy Lifters GB w/you. It's going to be a monster.

Sure bondoman, no problem.

Here are a couple of badge ideas:

(sorry about the size, I'm still trying to fiqure out how to resize themConfused [%-)])

Armor:

A/C:

Ships:

Heli's:

Subs: (once shrunk you won't see the wavy lines)

Or if you guys dont like the "specific" badges then I have a normal badge:

I might change the font colour on that one...

If you guys feel you have alternate badge ideas by all means say them!

I have a number of entries that fit the bill:

USS Oriskany 1968-Converted from the Trumpy Essex kit

USS Orleck 1968-Converted from the Skywave Gearing

USS Laffey 1968-Converted from the Skywave Sumner

All 1/700. Might enter some Sovie-era armor too, after these.....

Here's my vote for the badge, resized twice.  Yeah, I'm a bit airplanecentric..

John, I like that Thud.

Chris, put me down for a Hasegawa 1/72 P2V-7 Neptune anti-submarine aircraft.  I was going to build that kit anyway for my step-father, who served in Vietnam in a unit that was phasing those birds out when he arrived on the scene.  I already did the P3-B that replaced the Neptunes in his unit, complete with self-made decals of his squadron insignia.  Going to do the same thing with the Neptune.  But I might as well build it for you guys and gals first!

Thanks John for resizing the badge, I'm still having trouble with it, If somebody wouldn't mind resizing the rest of them to roughly the same size as the smaller A/C badge that would be great! Also I'm going to make a participant list along with an "Official" thread for this GB sometime next week.

Thanks guys (and gals),

Yeah, I figure eBay is the best way to get a "D" at this point. When I do get one, I'd like to do an early BMF scheme. I've never rescrived a kit before, but the F-105D might be a nice candidate to try...although there are many panel lines.

I'd be interested to see what scheme you're doing.

OK...I joined the Cold War Group Build that we had a couple of years ago, and screwed up completely and had to drop out. Depending on the time frame of this build (if it's long, I'm in) I have a couple of ships and an F-4 that will qualify.

Chris, here are the rest of them sized to 90 pixels in height, had to crop the red square image to keep it large enough:

Awesome, Thanks alot John! Alright I was thinking the time frames for this GB would be Feb. 1st 08 to feb.1st 09, is that okay for everyone, or is it too long?

Chris, I think those dates are sufficient to allow for those of us who are already committed to a bunch of other group builds to be able to complete this one as well.

Chris, thanks for putting this together. Yes, time frame is good, gives a chance to us serial GB joiners to clear some builds, also allows people to build more than one type of kit.

In the meantime, you can add me with the 1:700 Dragon USS Charles F Adams DDG-2, a little destroyer who took part in the Cuba blockade during the missile crisis... Cheers! James

I'm not much of a ship guy, but I have to say: Neat subject! I'm actually looking forward to seeing this.

looking back at a GB like this, the selection is almost endless! There's even a lot of prop planes to choose from as well as jets. Armor would go back from the M-1 tank to the M-41 (I think the M-46 was gone by 1955). One could even drag out the battleship New Jersey and a couple heavy cruisers (Boston comes to mind right off the bat). Plus all sorts of PBR's and small craft. Wonder if any of the NG outfits were using WWII M-4 tanks as late as 1955? How about some of the British armor? or even Isreallie armor? I know an M-8 or an M-3 half track would work in that time frame.

My mind is turning in an utter state of mass confusion now!

gary - I know what you mean...  I am starting with a US destroyer involved in the Cuban missile crisis blockade, and was thinking of using that as the theme... aircraft, maybe the downed U2, or the a/c who overflew the missile sites and took the pics? Maybe research what soviet armor was present in Cuba at the time, ready to repell the invaders? I know MUCH less about this time than ww2 and other 'war years". For sure I am looking forward to the builds in here! Cheers, James

Chris, if those Feb 1 to Feb 1 build dates are official, put me down for the Dragon USS Ticonderoga in 1/350 scale, and the Aoshima aircraft carrier Minsk in 1/700.  I won't be starting them right away or using the group badge right away, but I shouuldn't have any problem finishing them. Please note that the Tico is partially completed--Ive built some of the lower superstructure and joined the hull halves--so if that's out of bounds I'll just do the Minsk.

Just found this.  Love the time line.  Lets me complete other GB's that I'm envolved in.  I would also build the Charles F Adams.  Reason is a personal one.  My father served on her in 68.  I believe she also was envolved in the search for the USS Scorpion.

Thanks JMart, I'll share those pics with you even though your boys polished off my Packers a couple of Sundays ago. Sigh [sigh]

I won't be doing any aftermarket stuff PE stuff, but I might have to use AM decals...the ones in the kit are in sort of poor shape.
