Classic Kit GB [Official Thread]
Posted by viper_mp on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 2:02 PM

Ok guys, changing from an idea to a go. So here it is:

This is a classic kit build.  Rules are simple:

  • No aftermarket parts [decals are allowed ONLY to replace kit markings if unuseable]
  • Must be a classic kit or reissue [pre 1980?]
  • attempt at making all working features function correctly
  • Must attempt straffing/bombing run on family members [jk]
  • DATES: Feb 1, 2008 to Dec 31, 2008

Kit can be any manufacturer, as long as its old.  Post your pics here and lets have some fun! Perfection is not required on this one.

LOL, I was actually thinking of using that exact kit for the GB.  I have over a dozen classic kits.  From rockets to space vehicles, ships, planes, even some armor.

C'mon people, I know there's interest out there.

I posted in the Aircraft forum for this, but please put me in this gb with a Monogram F4U Corsair.  It is a re-issue but having built the original and inspected this particular kit, it is the original mold.

I might have some qualifying kits, but how do we find out if they're original molds or for that matter the issue date?

I've frankly have no idea what to look for.

Oh, and you should transfer this over from the aircraft forum to the GB forum.  Two places to post will be a nightmare, not to mention this is the appropriate forum now since this seems to have taken off.

Building Now:

1/48 Academy Bf-109G6 - 100%

1/48 Tamiya F4U-1A - 5%

Upcoming:

1/48 Revell F-14D

The older Monogram kits usaully have a copyright stamp on the molds... even the recent re-issues still have the original date.

Check Ebay.... if you search for a kit, you'll often find a picture of the old, old releases, and it'll let you see the age of a kit. You don't have to buy the original, of course, but it helps research the age.

AFAIK.... I think re-issues of the old kits are OK. I think the emphasis is more on the fun! [;D]

If you're not sure- ask about a kit. Sure bet somebody here knows! LOL

HTH! Big Smile [:D]

BTW- I'm planning on doing the old Monogram F4F. It has folding wings! I just got it off eBay. The original molds date back to '60 or '61, I believe.

Well, the only "older" kit I have that doesn't have any AM already allocated for it is a 1/48 Monogram AT-6 Texan.

The only copyright stamp I can find anywhere on the parts just indicates "MMI", no date.  Copyright date in the instructions says 1979.  Given that, I would assume I'm squeeking by.

And if so, I'm in! Thumbs Up [tup]

If not, well that's all I have.  Bummer. Thumbs Down [tdn]

I found an example on Ebay from 1979.... so it's good! Thumbs Up [tup]

That's actually supposed to be a great kit!

Jon, it looks like it will be.  The detail in this older kit rivals some of today's newer releases, particularly in the cockpit.

I'm gonna go stir up trouble in the aircraft thread to figure out where the heck this build thread will finally thrive.

I dunno guys, seems like we need to go with one thread.  But the AC forum thread seems to be the main thread.  So I think we should use it.  But I dunno.

I'd say just post something that says "Please go to the GB thread for further posts" and link to this. People will figure it out. Big Smile [:D]

That way when others are looking to join a GB, they'll see it here.

Viper and the Gang:

These pics are of what I believe is a Classic Revell kit of the B-26 Marauder....#04525.....mine is a reissue...still sealed, but I built this 25 years ago, I know it! I'll open it up if I need more evidence....

....What am I saying? I'll open it right now!

(time passes)

ahhhhhhhhhh! I can't tell!

But if this qualifies....I'd like to add it to my GB project. No one seems to be building these right now.....and I recall it was a bear of a build.

Whaddaya think?

Looks good to me, nam.  I know thats an old kit.

As for the Badge, my computer has been acting up.  I'm trying to get something with all the classic kit logo's in it.  Mono, Revell, Heller, Airfix.

Hello,

Can I join in ? I have an old Revell P-40E that has been collecting dust for years . Sounds like a good excuse to break the seal and open it up.

AWWW Heck, put me down for an Airfix HE-177 that has been in my stash for more years than I care to count. I know its from the early 70's.

Ok, the computer seems to be responding now.  So I should have a badge sometime in the morning. As it is nearly 3am and I just came off duty for the night, I am going to bed.

Ahh, one of my questions answered. 60 or 61! Can't believe it. I'll either have to do this same kit, or find dates for a couple of others. Have the 1/48 Monogram BF-109G as well as a 1/48 Arii P40... Anyone happen to know when those first rolled out?

Monogram had a 109E out in at least 1968..... not sure about a G model. Any copyright stamping on it? Sometimes it's on the underside of the horizontal stabilizers, or on the lower wing piece.

Ahhhh, I'll have to look there. The instructions say 1990, but I wasn't sure if that was just from a reboxing, or the actual release date. Going to raid the stash now. Wink [;)]
