Group builds
Posted by Clifford on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 9:23 AM

     Hi,

I'm new to the forums but not to modeling.  I was wondering what a group build is and what it's about. The IJA/IJN WWII build of last year sounded interesting. I have a 1/32 scale Entex Willow plus about 60 other Japanese aircraft kits to build.  Thanks.

Someone comes up with an idea and makes a set of criteria like the start date and an end date, and maybe limits on aftermarket goodies.  It can be as broad as something like "P-51 Group Build" or it can be more specific the "yellow Nose Mustangs of 361FS".  As long as the model fits the criteria, that's about it.

and you are expected to post photos of at least the finished build, and WIP is also nice.

the work in progress pictures can get you positive feedback on how your build is gong, or what you might want to change, not to mention the inspiration seeing some of the other work going on.

some current examples are the HUNTERS Group build, any scale, but it needs to be specifically a tank hunter/killer like an M10 tank destroyer Or the Winter GB. this is more a cross over, the main thing is that it is in a winter camo paint, it can roll or fly.

A wild one right now includes planes and armor with badges for several different Countries depending on your model. I am working on a Spitfire in US markings, a M3 Honey tank for the British badge and a Bf 109 for the German.

Group badges are those things you see in many of the posts at the bottom. Some builds allow immediate use, others you must complete and post before you claim the badge.

IMHO its usually the moderator that makes it work. That takes dedication as an online prompter.

The IJA/IJN is a good one. The moderator has a lot of good reference material and takes the time to scan and post it. The FAAM build's got amazing commraderie. Others wither.

The key seems to me to be that our failures make us better, and these forums currently seems to be really positive, so join up and get out the digicam!
