AUTOS - Auto Forum Group Build Tamiya Williams F1 BMW FW24! in 1/20 Scale...
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, November 1, 2003 11:40 PM
Ok the kit number for this build is 20055. We will be starting this build on November 3, 2003 and Ending it January 3,2003!

Anyones allowed to join in on the fun...Rules? Ummmm they're arent any! Go as far as you wish to take your model....Sky's the limit. Let your imagination as well as your wallet run wild.

Does that mean everyone has to buy aftermarket stuff. NO!!! Personally Im basically going to do it OOB with aftermarket Decals.

Be sure to ask any questions here and post your progress with any pics as often as you like. And Enjoy!

She threatened to not only take away the credit card. . .but she threatened to tell all your wives/girlfriends/significant others what we are doing!
Luckily, I quickly set up her tape of her favorite soap opera and she settled down. . . she won't remember a thing!

Hi all

I have already built Tamiya's 1/20 Grand Prix Collection No.55 (ITEM 20055). There are a couple of decals sets and also an PE set from studio 27.

To complete any carbon pattern use Tamiya's tips for airbrushing here http://www.tamiya.com/english/howto/car1/tip1.htm

Here is a link to show you some after market parts http://www.hlj.com/cgi-perl/hljlist.cgi and Studio 27 makes PE parts for this kit. 1/20 FW24 Grade Up Parts. There is also an FW24 decal set, FW24 Sponsor decals (compaq and other) and FW24 High Tech decals. All offer different options when working on this, yet another fine Tamyia kit.

Here is a like to all those options...they are about 1/2 down that page.

http://www.scaleracecars.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=s27f1

One last note...The kit calls for the blue to be TS-51. This paint is the exact copy of the real car. The white is just X-2 White.

I have a ton of reference photos of the reasl car. If anyone wants one or more email me and Ill send them out to you.

As far as decals, Ive decided to have Compu Graphix make some custom ones for me....least thats the plan. They do all of my business printing and have made decals for me in the past....1 great thing about thier decals....No silvering or setting solution required LOL.

lol chris, IAMCDN, you should find the kit priced aroud $34 to #36 , the photo-etched is around $12, and the aftermaket decals (Compaq sponser) about $12....

This kit looks REALLY challenging...... I LOVE it!!!!!!

I'm going to be a late starter, maybe December. However I was going to use the Compaq decals but in my research I discovered that there are some aerodynamic differences between the early season (Compaq) car and the later (HP) car (mainly in the front wings and the mid section wings by the rear wheels). So if you are one of those people who crave accuracy and precision you may have a little scratch building ahead of you.

For those interested in how others are doing with an FW 24 check out www.cifesystem.com/fw24-1.htm

Its a build sequence for the Studio 27 FW24. It goes over 8 different pages and I haven't read them all but it looks impressive and gives a few pointers which may be of value for the Tamiya kit.

The current Tamiya magazine (Issue 101 Oct/Nov) also has a detailed build of the kit but I'm sure you're all aware of that. That has some comments on the carbon fibre decals choices as well.

Well it would depend on how great the differences are, for me anyway... can you perhaps, set me in the right direction on some of your references???

Thanks a million...

BTW.... that link above doesn't work, sorry

Hey Moe,
( I had to do that, love those stooges!)
I once tried to get an F1 car "right" for a race, but there are so many little things that change for each race, some moments before the lights go out, that you are really at the mercy of after market guys. Now I stay, for the most part, to the version in the box, even though these are mostly the cars as run in Japan for some unexplained reason?LOL.
I am in the process of converting a MP4/8 Ford McLaren to an MP4/9 Peugeot McLaren Late Version. Luckily, if I just screw it up horribly I can put the original decals on it and call it Michael Andretti's McLaren from (insert one of seven races he crashed out of here).

Don't worry everyone, I can take care of all the photographing and posting of the pictures! If your not familiar with my special brand of talent, you can check it out on another thread in this forum.

Just kidding of course!!!Tongue [:P] I couldn't resist poking fun at myself.

I will be getting my kit in the next few weeks. I need to make some progress on my Enzo first.

Hey Chris,
If we all ahve to build the same kit shouldn't we all have the same decals to use too?
I'll give you my address so you can send a set of those custom made decals out to me.

Sorry guys as usual I didn't check the spelling of the web address. It should have been .html. Try www.cifesystem.com/fw24-1.html I did test it and it works now!

Littlemoe I checked Autocourse 2002, other F1 annuals and various motoring magazines. The differences aren't striking the site adve also shos some of the differences. My preference is for the Compaq decals because I think the red outlines just add theat little extra.

Nicholma,
That FW24 is a Studio 27 resin kit! I can't miss a car payment to buy that! My wife stresses over the price of a Tamiya kit, $150-$170 would put her over the top.
I'm afraid it may cause death- MINE!

Non-scientific poll, how many here are going to use After Market parts?

Straight box build on this one for me. :)
