It would be great if you could join, Harv...you can sign up any time between now and the end date if you feel you can finish it by the end date. Of course it's not a rock solid end date, but meant to give a little structure to the group build so we're all working to the same dates.

I'd love to have your character in this GB.

Sure this shouldn't be called the F-86 GB? Laugh [(-D]

Love to get in on this one, hoping I can clear out my current GB pile...got a flamethrower Sherman or a pile of a/c that might qualify. Will be keeping tabs on the build, and hopefully I can get in on it! Big Smile [:D]

I am going to keep this as a Korean War GB...I've done some research on the air war in Korea, and would love to see some Migs, F-84's, Shooting Stars, Corsairs....and then there's the whole realm of the ground war of which I know very little. I'm hoping to learn quite a bit through this GB.

I think some Dupes armor (and a Sabre?) would fit in nicely here.

I can't believe this, but I've been shopping around online for a Sabre. That Academy F seems to get pretty high marks...Big Smile [:D]

I was only joking about changing the GB, btw. Wink [;)]

Being the eternal optimist that I am, I'll go ahead and throw my hat in.....probably won't get started until mid build at the earliest, but I'll give it a try.

Dupes, have you considered the KINETICS 1/32 F86? I`ve only seen one built and its supposed to be the best to date. I would love to see someone build one here. There is an AM cocpit out for it also...............Harv

Charles...hope to finish the Academy Hornet soon and was planning on a Dog Sabre next. If that doesn't qualify, I also have an F-86F in the stash. Haven't joined a GB in a long time...sounds like a gas.

The Korean War Mustang is a great addition. As popular as the Mustang is, I rarely see them built as the F-51. I'll be looking for yours when you get around to it. Glad to have you on board, Bob.

    Dupes:

I've built the Academy F-86F this year and found it to be a great kit. THe cockpit suffers from bareness and you'll help yourself out by starting with aftermarket decals, but the rest of the kit was nice...especially for the price.

I've just ordered the Hasegawa Sabre today so I can do a comparison with the Academy kit. Even if the Hasegawa kit turns out to be a "nicer" kit, it will be hard to beat Academy dollar for dollar.

Jerry: It would be an honor to have you in the build. From what I've seen, the Sabre Dog never made it into the Korean War (I'd love to be shown otherwise...I have a "D' in my stash as well), but the F-86F would be welcome. What scale and kit do you have?

I plan on doing something a little special. I've had some custom decals made for Robbie Risner's mount and this being the 35th anniversary of his book "The Passing of the Night" (highly recommended), along with the airing of the Dogfights Season One episode "Mig Alley", I thought I would build it as a tribute.

Hey Mucker, thats my build!. I plan on using those decals for my build(1/32). Not to be too nit picy, you have the wrong wing for that bird. It should be the slatted short wing. I have to do some sugery to my wings to make it right. But a very nice build!!

Harv, where'd you ever come up with decals for 1/32? It took me forever to find references on-line. I know what you mean about the wing. I don't think I'm up for major surgery (assuming I can even find the Cutting Edge kit), so I may just leave it as is. I also have the 1/48 Italeri kit, but the wing isn't correct here, either.

By chance, have you read his book? It really humbles you when you think you have it rough. I can't even fathom the things he and his fellow servicemen went through in Hanoi.

Mucker, they are EAGLE STRIKE #32046. It has CAPT Fishers "PAPER TIGER" FU-958 and MAJ. HAGERSTROM`s "MIG POISON/ NORINE" FU-341. I know there still available, but off hand couldn`t tell where, but I have seen them. I got mine about 8 months ago.

And no, I havent read his book but sounds good. I may just get it!

With the HASEGAWA kit you just have to cut about a 1/4 in out between the wing tip and pannel line by the outer flap. As a matter of fact, the decal sheet has the instuctsions on how to do it included!............Harv

It seems like a nice excuse for me to build a Gabby's Sabre Smile [:)], however I may ask you gebtlemen for some help. Seing so many Sabres on a list I hope you will know the answer to my question.

There was a Sabre F-86E-10 with name "GABBY"on a port side.

What would be a kit available for this aircraft and decals , all in 1/48 scale ?? Any hope ????

Wow. That is SHARP! Make a Toast [#toast] Did you go paint or foil for the NMF? And who's decals did you end up using?

Someone Dirtball asked if I would consider the 1/32 Kinetic Sabre...no, but just because I don't build in 1/32. HOWEVER, I do have a 1/48 Kinetic F-84 on order currently - that suitable? Wink [;)]

    Charles,

I might like to join but it would particularly lighten my load if I could enter my partially started F7F Tigercat (roughly 10% done) that I'm doing for the Grumman Iron Works GB.  It will not get any more work done on it before the start date as I'm leaving on a southeastern US tour, er, vacation, next week and will not be back until just about the start date.

Otherwise I'll have to check my stash and see what fits ... maybe a Bearcat, maybe an F-84 ...

oh I love this idea, since I have always been a fan of Korea as the "Forgotten War" (Had 4 uncles and 2 cousins serve in it, one of them did not come back, young lad of 22).

of course I am absolutelly swamped and behind my ongoing GBs... TENTATIVELY I can put together the old Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog and I also have the old monogram "century series" super sable. Um.....

    Hey mucker,

Please put me in for a 1/72 Hase F9F-2 Panther. I plan to do it as the F9F-3 that made the Navy's first jet kill of the war. That will provide some history for the completion blurb. I signed up for the Mud Movers GB with a Skyraider, but he's not allowing crossovers so I'll go with the Panther here for now. I've already put a history blurb over there if you'd like to check it out.

Should I manage to complete these two, I have a number of other eligible kits I might try here, but first things first.

    Thanks

    Dick

    Greg:

There is not a kit in 1/48 with an unmodified E wing, or in any other scale for that matter.  I have been mapping the wings on an F-86F-20 with the 6-3 hard wing mod and an F-86L, which has the 6-3 slatted wing with the 1 foot tip extensions, dimensionally the same as an F-86F-40.  Photos are the only reliable method of determining the wing for a Sabre. Some E's in Korea got the 6-3 hard wing mod, so it depends on time frame too.

What I plan to do is combine the wing from a Pro-Modeler F-86D with the Academy F-86F to get an E, so far it looks do-able.  I believe the F-86D kit has the most accurate wing for a Sabre of the available models, and it has separate slats.  I believe the sweepback and root chord of the Academy kit to be considerably off, and will be posting some comparative photos and drawings I have made of the wings at the McClellan Museum.  I wish there was an unmodifed E or D near me to also photo and measure.  There are drawings for the Sabre from North American, but they generate more questions than answers in my mind.

Someone asked if F-100's, and another F-86D's got to Korea.  The Hun was too late, and so was the D, and like the 2 seat Voodoos, F-89's, and F-94C's, F-86D's were only used stateside with ADC.  F-94B's did work in Korea, and don't forget the F3D-2, it also was there.

Harv, I too would like to know the source of the Risner decals you have in 1/32.

Here is a list I compiled from articles about Korea in the first 4 volumes of Wings of Fame.  There are undoubtedly others, and many of the North Korean types were used in only minor roles, the main aircraft being the MiG-15, Po-2, AND Tu-2:
