Bombers & Support Units Group Build
Posted by DantheMan85 on Monday, June 30, 2008 2:51 PM

Hi,

This group build is mostly about the Bombers though out history, but also about the support units that have helped them. During World War II, the Fighter Escorts help the Bombers get to there targets, in the 50's we started to see Air refueling help add the distance to the Bomber forces.

So to get to the point, this group build will be about the Bomber, Fighter Escorts, and Tankers. Starting from World War I all the way up to the current day,

The models can be in any size and scale,

After market kits, and cross over are welcomed,

Dioramas are welcomed to,

Start date will be the first of July, and will fly up to December 7th

If your interested in this build, post to let me know what you are building. Or if your just wondering about this build that's Ok to.  Oh and please tell what the scale is for yours to.

Here are the Badges I have came up with,

I will be doing three 1/72 B-52D models, one 1/72 B-52H, and if I can later a 1/48 B-17G, and a 1/72 B-2.

FeldMarschell, Three B-52D, B-52H

Aggieman, B-25, B-26

Viper_mp, B-25

My next builds will be for the Medium Bombers GB, a B-25 and a B-26.  Are those bombers eligible?  If so I'll join in.

Well, I made progress so far on my B-25.  This is the classic Monogram B-25, in 1/72.  Its a crude kit by today's standards, but still fun to build.  The figures arent the best, so they got basic painting.  I did manage to scratchbuild some bulkheads in the ockpit and nose to block off the open fuselage [showing the nose weights].  Speaking of weights, I THOUGHT I was good when I put 4 pine wood derby weights under the cockpit....wrong.  I had to add two to each engine nacelle [front of it] and another 3 to the nose before it would sit right.  And speaking of stance, when on its wheels, should a B-25 have a nose up cant, or should the fuselage be parallel to the ground?  The kit gear gives it a very visible upward cant.  Oh, and masking the canopy was a nightmare.  The molded in frame....is on the inside. The outside is perfectly smooth.

Here's a few pics so far.

Nice job so far on your B-25 viper, I know what you mean about it being a nightmare for making, I did a B-29 at the beginning of the year, that was a nightmare.  I would think it should sit up right, on a table.

I've made some progress on my 52's, I glued the two halfs together tonight, and after lighty sandy the edges, so to better the changes of them lineing up right.

Well, though it was an uphill battle all the way, my B-25 is finally done.  This is the Revell B-25, box scale [around 1/96th] and the mold is from 1953. I built it mostly OOB, with only minor scratch building to add a rear bulkhead to the cockpit and nose gunner [to hide the lead weights.] The color is a mixture that I had made up for my P-39Q, however it came out very different on this model due to its grey primer base, versus the OD base of the -39.  Enjoy!

Now once I can get a couple of odd jobs off the workbench, I plan on building a P-38 Lightning, which I would like to add to this GB.

Just a couple of preliminary questions:  Does the scope of this GB include carrier-based bombers, e.g., single- or twin-engine jet or prop attack A/C?  Second, how about Navy buddy tankers?
