Ron,

As a curiosity, what are you using to thin the oil washes? And how long do they typically take to dry before you apply the next wash? Since these are oils, do they "cure" when they are dry meaning subsequent washes won't erode them and allow for layering or does the overlapping wash provide a mix of the two? Nice to see the breakdown of how you apply them.

Bill, this is the thinner i use i get it from the hobby lobby, it dries quickly maybe 30 mins or so if it isnt pooled so i can then begin a second wash which if i chose i can layer or if i want it to mix i can work it in its a really very flexible method also i can clean the previous wash of to a large degree if i dont leave it long, plus this way i get to see the results fairly quick and in a single evening i can put down all my washes without the wondering. this thinner will not bother acrylics at all but if used on enamels it will soften them so they will scratch but i have never had peeling. once the washes are finished a couple of days to cure and then a dullcote seals the deal.

hiya ronBig Smile [:D]-- i think your build looks as usual-- absolutely superior---!!Approve [^]--i am really fascinated with your paint system-- I think it would translate really well to 1/16 scale -- don't you?-- thanks so much for sharing your knowlege and expertise-- the t-34/85 looks awsome dude!!Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] and the paint tutorial has enlightened me -- my '85 has only a first base coat on it, but it is acrylic so maybe a prime candidate to try the artist oils-- thanks again man--- treadBig Smile [:D]Tongue [:P]

That looks really impressive so far.... you really cranked right thru that kit....

Ive seen alot of people using that oil spot technique lately, and I love the results... I'm working on a mech kit right now painted in acrylics that might be a good candidate to try on, maybe expreiment on some scrap first.... any advice for a first attempt?

Ron,

I'm wondering how it will react to enamels with a Future coat...I'm thinking that as long as the enamels themselves are cured and the Future has also cured, there should be enough protection provided it isn't roughly handled in the wash process to stand up to the treatment. I've got the same odorless thinner and some oil paints sitting around in small tubes I picked up way back when but never got around to playing with. Might have to give this a whirl on the next available test subject. Big Smile [:D]

Its fine on future Bill as long as it has had a day or so to cure its about the only time i use future is when i use enamels for the base coat which is only when i dont have the right colour in acrylics but definatly test it first that goes without saying Smile [:)] also i have used it on cured enamels without future and as long as i dont work it and just let it lay it as never gave me any problems such as peeling or wrinkling.

Tread thank you for the kind words, personally i think the paint and filter method would work fine i would definatly build a few test beds to get some practice on and find out for sure if you like it before painting yours, it is too much of a work of art to practice on, it would scare me to death to have to paint that. Smile [:)]

prometheum, only advice i can give is practice on something first find out what look you want, i basically concider every build i do practice for the next one, sometimes things go great other times i have to regroup and try a new approach because they dont work too well but for me that is a lot of the fun. also i dont use the spot technique on every build its just russian green really works well also US olive drab works well, when it comes to camo schemes i tend to go more for fading.

Ian i used to apply chips with a toothpick i think it was paul (fingerseddie) that gave me the idea of the scouring pad and ive used it since trick for me is go slowly and lightly leave it for a while then see if it needs more or not, its real easy to get carried away heh.

long post but i got nothing to do heh no builds on the bench and waiting for the tracks and last washes to dry good then a final mulling over and its done, sitting here trying to decide what to build next.

well here are the last stages of this build,

time to get the tracks done, here i once again used the powder and piled it on liberally

then used the brown wash to soak it all and sludge it around

once this dried i used a muddy coloured wash followed by a light wash

finally another brushing with the powder scrubbing it into the tracks then hard brushing the loose away

the tracks were finished up with a light redrybrushing of the steel and they were finished.

back up on top i used a rust wash very lightly for some rust marks here and there.

at this point the whole thing looked a tad flat for me

so i used a very watered down future mix to add just a very slight sheen and the whole thing was finished up by scrubbing a little of the powder here and there mainly where the bedsprings were attached to the tank and travel areas to show crew wear.

well that basically concludes this project i would like to thank you all for the support and input and tagging along, it was a wonderful kit to work with and i would definatly recomment it.

from this

to this

and the rest.

Nice work on both the finished item and the write-up Ron! The bent up nature of the bedsprings is a nice touch and they look just like I would imagine exposed steel would under the conditions. Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]

Sigh [sigh] You make everything look so easy. If I were to follow your steps, I doubt I could duplicate your results. Just me talking, but that's how I feel.

Anyway, it looks like it should in all it's glory, now it needs to go in a dio with a hungry Panzer-Grenadier peeking from behind a wall with his Panzerfaust at the ready. Muhahahaha  Evil [}:)]
