Tamiya 1/48 Willys COMPLETE *Figures WIP*

I know.  This is seven years later .  But do tell us how you fared at the convention.  What about the paintedbfigures and the design of the passenger?  I'm one of those guys reentering the hobby after 50 years; hence I am new to these sophisticated and artistic skills

Top job. She'll be nicely rounded off when the figure is in place! I think it was a VERY good idea to stretch his leg into a laid back relaxed pose-that should really give you the edge.

Thanks Wabashwheels! I have yet to see any serious amount of flash.... There has been none that I can remember even!

Then with several layers of oilwashes and a run with a sponge loaded with black-grey paint, and a final dusting with pigments, it is as good as done. It just miss it's crew now and it's all done, ready for the IPMS national competition the end of this very month! :D

The scale is 1/48, and that is a roughly 3-4 inches long.

Lasse,  I put this little beauty together back in the fall.  I didn't do the job that you've done.  I just wanted to comment about the amount of flash that appeared to be on the legs of the sitting soldier.  The kit I got of course had the ejector marks, but the figures were very clean, with a minimal amount of flash.  I'm sure that will be no problem for you, but that can become a great aggravation for some modelers.  Great work.  Rick.

Lately I have been doing alot of chipping, and touching up a few parts. I have also painted the grain on the M1 Garand found on the windshield. I managed to have a rather bad accident with one of the windshield brackets - so have to fix that aswell....

No pictures - but they'll come!!!

Lester: Thanks for the comment! I am aware of the fact that they should have the same colour, and I may change it. I just thought it gave a little more colour to it all!  I'd be interested in your pictures of your Willys too. As I mentioned, a friend of mine has a Willys he just restored. It's a 1942 with a '43 body, and the hood off of a Hotchkiss. It was recently featured in a national magazine for historical military vehicles aswell. He says that it was salvaged from the bottom of the English channel in '45-'46 and rebuilt be someone in England, then shipped to Norway, where it has been ever since!

So, a new update, anyone?

I got all the decals on, with a very good result! I got a slight crack up in the circle on the huge star, but filled that out carefully with several layers of very thin white paint!!

I tried to find out what all the hood numbering was, but could only find out that the first "20" was the weightclass.. Anyone could help me here??

Also added some scratsches on the side, front, rear, underneath and inside.. Some places more than others.. First I added white, and then a dirt layer inside that. Quite successfull:

And that was all for now! The windshield is also doing a great recovery, according to Doctor Willy...... What, that joke wasn't that bad??

BTW, are you planning another Norway WWII GB?  I'm still itching to get that Armo Neubaufahrzeuge and build it!! 

Lasse,nice work,however I must point out that the straps on the seats should be the same color as the cushions.On the real cushions these are sewed to the cushion.They have metal snap buttons that mate to snaps on the metal seat frames.This is based on many pictures and the 1/1 scale 1943 Willys MB jeep I am restoring.Just for your info.Great work,Lester

I'm loving this build Lasse-she's looking great!

I nearly picked this very same kit up at a show on Sunday but ended up with the Tamiya 1/48 Hanomag. It was a very hard desicion but as my LHS don't stock the halftrack and do stock this kit that factor decided it for me. 

I'll be picking this kit up on payday and if it's ok I'll be following your blog and maybe picking a bit of your brains too!

Thanks there, Hoffmann!  You better go and complete a model!  I remember before, when it was to simply rip the parts of, glue them together more or less after the instructions, and then shoot them outside! :D

As the IPMS National competition is getting dangerously close, perhaps it is time to start building -a lot-...

Here's a grouppicture of the spare wheel, the jerrycan, the chassis and all the wheels. Wheels were painted quite simple. Black undercoat and a quick drybrush of black grey. Olive Drab did the job for the middle parts.
The Jerrycan itself was painted German fieldgrey. What a sweet shade!
The engine was painted a little, tiny dab more blue (I found it better) than what is futured on a friend of mines Willys Jeep..
The muffler has an ugly red colour, but with some extra work it will look like rust! :)

I dryfitted the body, the chassis and the wheels to see how it looked (Dryfit = no glue), unt mein got!! It turned out to be an absolute great show in my opinion!


And here it is with the modified, not-yet-done foot:



Absolutely great so far. The windshield was not attached as it is healing up after an incident.....!

Hans: I know what you mean about the Bandai kits! My dad was lucky enough to actually find a Bandai one with the swastika printed on the box. This was a 1/48 Schwimmwagen found and bought at IPMS 2009!

Not too much of a progress right now, as school always comes first! But here's a little one.

I drybrushed the entire vehicle to get some more variation in the colour, and to further more see the details better. The headlights were also painted, with Citadel's Mithril Silver.

 The seats are also well underway, painted in Vallejo German WWII Fieldgrey, with the straps painted bestal brown, also from Citadel. I think it looks great!

I also painted the tools in Vallejo Black Grey, and the wooden handels in Vallejo Buff in order to prepare for wood.

And then the last picture here, taken this morning after it dried overnight. The buff handels were simply streaked with a brush loaded with Raw Umber oilpaint. This creates a very nice wooden pattern! And I do have a more detailed tutorial for this here on the forum. The streaking on the shovel I will change to the other direction, as this is not the way it really goes!

Lasse,  the Jimmy is an excellent kit & a fun build.  Only issue is a plethora of ejector pin marks that need filling/removing.  I dislike that kind of grunt work, but can't be avoided.

Although the figures aren't what I wanted (Tamiya screwed the pooch on these guys, they're way too short), I had to snag a few of those Jeeps... I'd spent years looking for the Bandai 1/48th kits to no avail, so this kit was a Godsend..

Looks like it is coming along well.  Keep up the good work.

I knew from the very beginning it came with a Jeep...It is badly labeled as Tamiya wanted to avoid any license fees to JEEP....

This is not the case.  Tamiya has fully licensed their Jeep kits.  The 1/35 version has the Jeep logo and trademark right on the packaging and it says it is licensed.  Sounds like just bad marketing strategy. 

Thanks Wingnut!  Yeah, I hope the leg will add that little extra detail that makes the model all so better!

Rick, gotcha. I knew I had heard "Jimmy" before! I've always wanted to build that kit.. How is it?

A jimmy is just a nickname for the U.S. 21/2 ton 6x6 Cargo Truck.
