You're right edog. It's fixed, we see what is in store, and we are spiraling out of control. I say we move on before someone calls the SPCA for beating this horse.

WOW!! This is getting way too political!! When people are using the Nazis and Joseph Stalin for comparison, the topic has gotten way out of hand. Let’s face it; we all agreed to use suitable language when we signed up. Let’s all be grown ups here and follow the rules as we have agreed to do.

As far as mentioning the two that led us to possibly have a filter placed on the forum… My guess is that the two parties are younger and were “testing” the rules. Lord knows that I have “tested” many rules myself. Actually, I have done faaaaaaaaaar stupider things than use inappropriate language at the wrong time. They know now that it is not going to be accepted and let’s leave it at that.

I hope that the community has not chased those two off. Now, aren’t we supposed to be building models or something?

I agree with Robert 100%. There are a couple of threads on this very subject and the concensus has been pretty much that the filters are bad, self policing and more importantly common courtesy, good.

Muzzleflash. I understand your point, but bad analogy. These filters are not even close to Poland 1939. Now round the offenders up, run them into a ditch and shoot them.....thats Poland 1939.

You definately make a good point, but this is not a case of the 1st ammendment being infringed, its common courtesy. I sincerely hope you get this concerend about speech and perception when it comes to the Patriot Act, the accusation that you are unpatriotic if you question the curret administrations foreign policy and decisions regarding the middle east, or that you support terrorism if you are against the Presidents policys. Those are more closely related to Stalins policies, Joe MacArthy's communist witch hunts, Goerings statements about propaganda and popular thinking and support, the conservatives right's censorship in libraries, tv, movies, literature and information taught in schools. Thats closer to Poland in 1939 than this is.Wink [;)]

We have seen the simple solution, the application of the filters. Then it isn't a problem anymore. (Stalin was quoted as saying Get rid of the man, get rid of the problem) Sure its a pain, but I could learn to adapt. I'd rather not. Those that couldn't would be gone. Again, problem solved, much to our detriment. Why cut off the arm to heal the hangnail?

I think we handled it well. The members of the Forum were very forthright and up front about their displeasure. I think we did a good job of self policing and hopefully lessons were learned, behavior corrected and we can all move along.

I agree with Sherm. When we decided to join FSM, we have basically agreed to go with the rules of the site (whether we have read/understood them or not). We may not like the rules but since we have agreed to abide with them (by being a member of the site), we have to do so.

And sometimes when members break the rules, those in charge may institute measures to reprimand the rule-breaker and to prevent the rest of the members from doing the same. It is their right as it is their site. And as members of the site we should respect that right.

I agree with Sherman on all counts...and the one I'd like to see is giving certain respected members on here the ability to moderate the postings and relieve some of the burden that the FSM staff already has to keep this great forum running smoothly.

Shermanfreak, THIS is the most important point FSM is involved so even if we DID allow that type of posting THEY should not have to worry about it as it DOES reflect on them.

I love your models and your impact to this community, but i disagree with you. I am not in your home, you are in a public place. You can install software that will censor your own internet experience without having to force it on others.

Kids should not be on any computer connected to the internet without adult supervision. The adults should have filtering software installed. This would not be a problem if you all took care of your own censorship.

If we were building models of mickey mouse while singing kumbaya then I might have a different view on the tone for the forums... but if words in a forum online bothers you personally, then you can personally fix it yourself.

Two very good points made here muzzleflash. Kids should not be unsupervised on the internet. But if I am on a site where the rules of what is and what is not acceptable language are clearly stated to all who join. I should not have to worry that if my granddaughter is sitting on my knee looking at all the pretty tanks.

Personally .... yes they do bother me. Once again it falls back to the rules as stated. When I joined, I read them, saw that they were acceptable to me and I have abided by them. If they had said "use any old type of language you want" .... I would not have joined.

You may disagree with me .... and that's quite fine. I still feel that you all are invited guests in my home. The rules in this part of my home are the rules that are stated when you join the forum. As long as they are abided by, then you are all welcome.

I think a friendly reminder with a "don't do it again or you will be banned" would have been sufficent.

SoapBox [soapbox]

Ok ... guess I'll throw my 2 cents into the fray.

First of all, I'm one of the ones who doesn't like to see off-coloured language used in the forums. Every message that is posted here at the forums that I open is invited into my home. When you are invited into my home, and use language that is unfit to be heard, you will be asked to leave.

But I'm also a forgiving sort of fellow .... an appology carries a lot of weight with me. And a promise not to do it again will gain you access into my home once more.

But I also don't like filters. Filters have been proven time and time again to fail. I also understand that the staff of FSM have far better things to do with their time then to spend hours of each day patrolling the site. I think there are enough responsible members, as proven by the responses to the language used the other day, to handle the policing of the site.

Kick the offending members out ? .... not this time ... but the next time.

There will always be others to come along and do the same offensive posts.

Have a filter running on the site that cuts out more info then crap? Like I said earlier ... they don't work.

Have the staff of FSM on constant guard? .... a total waste of resources.

Assign a number of responsible members to moderate these forums? This is something that I have advocated since the beginning .... and it may well be the time. Give them the ability to clip, delete, and maybe even warn when something like this occurs.

This is our Forum ... graciously made available to us by the good people at FSM.

Let's keep it clean in here ... a place where we are happy to show our children and grandchildren our works.

Oh yeah! This trend hit my work site (the public schools here in cool ol' Portage Wisconsin) last year. It's called a filter and won't let you go onto any sites that the government thinks are no-no's. This includes one with all the information about MY M7 SNOW TRACTOR!! OUCH! History is a BAD thing. You can LEARN from it. Shame on you all for wanting to learn.

Oh yeah. Thanks 6th holers.

Did any of this make sense to any of you? If not, oh well. It's just the old guy rambling again.

Ron.

That reminds me of when my family was driving to Holland for a vacation in 1972. I saw a policeman in black leather cap and jacket stepping out of a Porsche 911 to hand out a ticket. I just thought that was the coolest "cop" that I had ever seen....

they should have a little button on each post that reads "report" and if you press that little button, it sends that post to the forum gurus for review.

Maj Rob, I saw your post too. It's just one of those things when you turn on the auto filter it's got the default settings that filter it all out. You can see now that they either have it turned off or Dave and crew have been modifying it. It's a shame they even felt the need to turn it on but givin enough time there's always going to be someone who has to spoil the party. I kind of like the idea of a temporary ban of offenders, say for 3 or 4 days then see if they can behave themselves. Of course that's still more work for Dave and them to "monitor" people so....

Oh well, we'll get by, it's still a great site with great people!

I brought this up in the admin forums, but the post was deleted. I noticed it when reading a posting in the helicopter thread when words like "assault helicopter" and "assigning Native American names to US Army helicopters" resulted in in asterisk edit.

While I do think that the flagrant profanity posted by pantless here a few days ago (should be "classless") was uncalled for, making any word that contains those 3 letters in a row as censored is a little overboard.
