He doesn't have a "stash" closet - those are all kits he bought built, not kits waiting to be built.

Are these models you've built? Are they unbuilt kits that you've bought?? Are these already built kits you've bought? Who builds all of these???

Jeebus - The unbuilt kits are not yet overcrowded in my showroom and bedroom. My sympathy for your unlucky illness. What is the one you wish for Christmas?

Bronto - Even though I have 5-6 modelers working for me and 4 of them work only for me, they cannot build all I bought as fast as I buy. I have hundreds of unbuilt kits and I don't know exactly how many. Of all the 257 kits I bought in 2010, there are just a few kits that were factory finished (1:72 armors x2, 1:144 warplanes x2) and a few that had already been painted by local artists. Maybe I should pictures of my stash and show them here in this thread.

Njal - Many of the kits that I bought in 2010 have been built and shown on my website, but many many more are still unbuilt. 90% of the kits I bought were from foreign hobby sites - hobbyterra, luckymodel, hobbyeasy, hobbylinkjapan, hobbysearchjapan - just to name a few. No site sell already built kits. After purchase I'll have to assign them to my modelers:
- Armors/Dioramas to "Art Instructor"
- Warplanes and warships to "Toom" and "Niphon"
- Figures (Vignettes) to "Joh"
- 1:72 figures to "pjareanwanit"
- Anything except figures to "Tazmanian"

Phaisal, I think you are overestimating the interest here in the size of your stash, none of which you intend to build yourself.........

I got 3 new display cases in November (1x2x3'). They were placed on top of old ones. Two are for 1:35 and one for 1:72. I've moved the armors/dio's out of the wall-based cased meant fot warships to these new cases:

I'll need 3 more cases like this soon.

That's quite the collection. A small fortune no less. And my wife thinks I have too many. I only have about 35.

It's interesting that you don't have any obvious particular interest ie armour, ships or aircraft - it seems that if it's a model it goes! I suppose that's why you are called Model Maniac! 

I can see things ranging from Viking Longboats to what I think looks like a  monster 1/16th Panther?

Staggering but amazing - you should charge entry to your house to see the museum!

I guess I'm just thoroughly and legitimately confused as to why anyone would buy such a large collection of kits, only to have others build them. 98% of the enjoyment I get from modeling comes from the building process. Sure the built ones are cool, but to me they are cool only because I know what it took to build them, and jsut how I obtained the effects I'd been working all along to master.

In any case, thank you very much for posting- definitely interesting to see some pictures of someone on teh more extreme end of plastic modeling/collecting.

There are lots of people that do this.  Reasons for it range from not being interested in building, not happy with the results the have achieved, to just wanting to collect built models.  It is the reason that die-cast have become so popular.  I don't mind, people that just want to collect keep me in business.

well, IMHO, as a model BUILDER, i think you are wrong. I like to see people go through the process of building models, learning as they progress, showing off somthing that they enjoy doing and are willing to learn and pass on their knowledge to other.

In my opinion you do none of this. Simply showing off that you have lots of money and can afford lots of kits and have people building for you on a production line is not what this hobby is about. Other than showing pics of built kits every so often, i do not recall you taking part in any other threads. I have never seen you try to help other modelers, but then how could you as you are a collector not a modeller.

I like to see people with a passion for building models. If i wanted to see what you show i would join a site for the hobby of buying die caste models.

I have no issues with what MM does.....I classify him as more of a collector and enjoyer of finished products of subject matter he likes vice a true model builder.  Hey, he hires five guys to build..I am sure they enjoy building them and taking the money....a good combination.  MM always gives credit to the guys who build them.

But to MM, this does beg the question:  How do you classify yourself these days?

I am happy you enjoy you hobby in a different way then I do. We all are different people and do things differently. You are sure helping the hobby by buying so many kit.

I also enjoy your website with all it's pictures.

A great place to read the lastest FSM magazine. Hard to build here, small parts keep getting flushed.

Njal, this picture greatly disturbs me. If that indeed is a rifle, please do the responsible thing and get it secured in some kind of case or gun safe. That is no place for an unsecured rifle. That's the kind of irresponsibility that leads to unnecessary gun deaths and thefts.

Hinksy - Thanks for your kind comments. My stash is not that big. Your LHS is that small?
A model has to be military one to comply with my specs. I started from warplanes 40+ years ago and then expanded to cover all the rest. But the last running number of each category (491 AIR, 265 SEA, and 2435 LAND) should tell you that I have much more armors than planes & ships combined. The Viking longboat is a military piece, the monster Panther is 1:8, not 1:16 and it's powerful enough to haul a Honda Fit (with the help of 5kg dumbbell in its belly to increase weight). The entry to my house has been, is, and will always be free!

Bronto - that's not a bathroom, just a restroom. No bathing in there.

Njal - It's just so natural that if you want to have a big collection you'll have to find helping hands. In Thailand alone there are many big collectors and they have their own team of builders. We all can build but we enjoy collecting kits built by pros than by ourselves. They do it much better than us. It's a matter of work specialization and income distribution which you'll find in other countries too.

Karl - I have about 10 BB rifles lying here and there and that's just one of them. It's no harm. For real firearm I have only a S&W .38 Combat Masterpiece which I bought in 1977. It's kept in a secured place.
BTW, I've seen your King Tiger in the latest FSM. Very nice work!

Bish - the number of responses to this thread has shown that I am right. I think most people here read my list of kits and view their pictures. As for built kits, what I show are not die caste models, but styrene kits built by the best modelers I can find. And people just love to see them. Let me show you some figures:

In defense of Phaisal, I will say that he HAS indeed commented in some threads of mine, and I find him to be a pleasant individual who has an incredible strength of character to endure some of the critique which he gets. 

I would also urge everybody to please recognize that what he is doing is promoting the hobby. His museum is actually that; as I understand it, he is quite the local attraction in his land, and if that inspires young kids to model, all the better.

In my estimation, I have more respect for a man who buys an insane number of kits and pays other people to build them and fill his shelves than a collector who buys kits off eBay or somewhere for the sole purpose of squirreling them away in order to resell them at an exorbitant profit someday, never to build them and in doing so, denying someone who MIGHT have otherwise built them the pleasure.

I have traveled to many far-off countries and seen many things which, culturally, I did not understand, and may have found somewhat odd, but which nether broke my leg nor picked my pocket. Phaisal's love of models--built or unbuilt--could be said to fall into this category for some of you here?

I'm still disturbed about the rifle in the WC.....

Good to know that that's not a full-on rifle then, Phaisal! I'm glad to hear that you have secured your personal protection!

I have no problem with what Model Maniac does; it's just a completely different hobby. Well it is similar, but still very different. He is a collector of models whereas I am a modeler. His goal is to obtain detailed replicas of various vehicles and figures to display. I don't build with the purpose of obtaining detailed miniatures; I build ONLY because I enjoy the process of building models.

Modeling (a mesh between skillful construction and art) and model collecting (a collection for display similar to any other collecting hobby [art, coins etc]) are two very different hobbies, and I beleive that is why Model Maniac is recieving some negativity in this thread. His hobby should be supported just as much as the hobby of plastic modeling, because they both promote hobbies related to plastic models... and his allows completed kits to be enjoyed by the public.

As far as thoese who have issues with you...come on people, lighten up . Every hobby/sport/interest is whatever we make of it. MMs' collection, just like this forum, is in a way like a museum. They exibit other people's work, the artist may or may not be there, it does not matter. You don't have to go in, and if you do just look at what you want but it is up to the museum owner and to the artist to exibit what they want.

Many thanks for defending me, Karl! You could be my attorney general! My strength and endurance was summed up in a poetry I wrote over 10 years ago. You'll still see it in my Content-Based Menu; It reads:

"In the Sky, the Mighty Falcon
Flies across the lost horizon;
Reaching the top of hostile sky
Creating Model Maniac Empire.
With Fire Power of all Tanks' Guns
With Realisticity and Precision;
The World has Greeted with Love and Joy
The Power Exists in All these Toys!"

Your second paragraph is very insightful, as if you're here and see what happens in Thailand. There's a new modeler named "num" (num2010) who has become a promoter/organisor for modeling workshop - to coach new modelers how to build armors, figures and dioramas for free. The 1st time workshop was held at his home, the second time was a field trip to my home as the following picture shows.



And they were more than inspired! by both quality and quantity!
After this event he held many more workshops at local hobby shops, with the help of several pro-modelers, sometime 3 at a time, as tutors. Getting more and more attendants each time.
About the rifle in the WC, there's not just one but five, plus a mortar (unassembled):



I also have some more in this room. Now that you know they're BB guns, they're not disturbing now:



PS. I got the February issue since 28th December. It came by air-mail. Yours is probably a surface mail, it's slower. ;-)

Most museums charge, mine is free!
