1/72 Italeri Opel Blitz,COMPLETE!
Posted by TD4438 on Sunday, February 6, 2011 11:49 AM

I was seriously disappointed with this kit.Parts fit for the cab was brutal and there were some horrible sink marks? in the rear tires.I decided to finish it off and shelf it.The decals were great and you were given a choice of five schemes to choose from.Too bad the kit has issues.

Why did this have to be on the outside of the tires?????

Might could have built this as a burnt out wreck....

Anyway, a very valiant effort here to try and save a real dog

Yikes, rear wheels are pretty bad. Indifferent I would have brought an aftermarket wheels to replace those right away.  Nice work on the rest especially the camo and fuel drums. Yes

A bit of digging shows this kit to be part ESCI (ancient) and part Italeri. The frame, suspension and bed are a bit intricate but went together well. The detail in those areas is pretty sharp and clean, while the cab is crude on fit with soft detail. This could have been a great kit.Kind of a shame.

If anybody knows of a better 1/72 Blitz, let me know.I built the MPC version years ago.I can't recall how good of a kit that was.

BTW,those barrels are not blue!

They are dark grey. This camera of mine takes nice pics, but wreaks havoc with color at times.

Whoa. I built the one by Revell, IIRC. There weren't any major fit issues, and absolutely no sink marks anywhere noticible. Sorry about those sink marks. In 1/72nd scale, there is no way those are fillable.

Still, you did a great job with what you could. Looks waaay better than mine. I'd give it two thumbs up.

TD< you can't really expect much with Italeri 1/72. Most of them are old ESCI re-pops, and show their age pretty badly.

Once you've seen or built the level of detail in the newer Dragon kits, you're bound to be disappointed by these older kits. Good for nostalgic fun, but not much more.

Still, it's a nice looking paint job and a decent looking model, IMO.

You do make a good point doog.I have a few 1/72 DML kits under my belt. They are excellant.

I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about this one.

If anybody knows of a better 1/72 Blitz, let me know.I built the MPC version years ago.I can't recall how good of a kit that was.

Both Roden and Academy have a 1/72 scale Opel Blitz, either of which is superior to the ex-Esci/Italeri kit. These kits have been around for half a decade or more. Each company's Opels have been released in a couple of different variants. The Academy sells a fuel truck (sold with a schwimmwagen) and also a cargo version with early and late cabs (two cabs but only one truck).

Roden's Opels come in a 4x2 and 4x4 version and are better detailed (in my opinion).

A good number of Italeri's newer 1/72 scale kits are brand new tooled kits, but if you see a kit in their inventory that was previously available as an Esci kit, you know it is a re-pop. Most Italeri kits that are sold in 2-packs with a quick build and regular detailed version are also new tooled kits. Their newer stuff is pretty good.

MAC Distribution also does a series of Opels, some of which include flak guns in the back. I've done the MAC Horsch and it was a trying kit, nicely detailed but a bit of a challenge. Not as well engineered, but it turned out very nicely. I have not seen the MAC Opels in person so can't comment on them like I can the Academy and Roden kits.

Thanks Rob.I usually don't build 1/72.I did this time for a 1/72 Group Build on another forum. However,I am determined to turn out a nice 1/72 Blitz after messing with this turd!

Thanks for the info.I'm gonna look into the Roden kits.I have seen them advertised somewhere recently.

Ouch, those ejector pin marks are bad!

Is this a new kit by Italeri or (as I suspect) an Esci repop I wonder.

If you read the thread or the links I posted, you'd see it was mentioned that it is an Esci reissue.

Well I admire your determination. Too be honest, I would have trashed it. Fortunately, they're not very expensive kits.

Thanks Rob, I posted my reply at work and in a hurry without reading all the thread posts.

Italeri can be so hit and miss in regards to quality.

Thanks dude.I only trash a kit when it is absolutely hopeless. There have only been four that I can think of.A seriously old 1/25 T-Bird.No glue would work on it.An MPC X-Wing.The fuselage halves just wouldn't fit together. The last two were both Maquette AFV's.A Zis-30 and a BA-20 armored car.Parts fit on the first was brutal, glue wouldn't work on the second.
