Trumpy Type 89 MRL
Posted by beav on Thursday, February 10, 2011 8:03 PM

Hey Guys, heres my first completed build for two years (college and army intervened)

Trumpeters 1/35sc 122mm Type 89 Peoples Liberation Army Multiple Rocket Launcher finished as K01 (or, if you're a fast one, its called KOI, the name of a type of ceremonial carp.  I thought it was funny at least...).

I built it as a part of the 'Have Gun Will Travel' GB for self-propelled artillery.  I tried my hand at the new style digital camo that the PLA is using these days, but I dirtied it up a bit.  I'm pleased with the effect, but I definitely missed the mark a bit on accuracy since my masks peeled in places, and not all of them are squared off correctly.  There is a bit more detail that my crummy photos washed out, but this gives you a decent idea of what it looks like.  It still needs an antenna, headlight lenses, and vision blocks.

That looks pretty damn sharp to my eyes. Nice job and a really cool subject to boot! Yes

One question - are there rockets? The tubes look empty, but that might just be the angle of the photo.

By the way - really nice job on that camo scheme - definately not an easy one to pull off.

Excellent job on the digi camo. Would've taken you ages especially on the tubes.

Really well done!! I´m currently building one as well, so I can say You did really fine here! I love the Digi camo, must´ve been fiendishly difficult to mask I guess

bbrowniii, there are no rockets provided in the kit, but they could be scrached quite easily I suppose. If one plans to do so, I suggest to replace the kit's tubes by brass tubings as well. Though not very prominent on the finished model, there are some nasty to fix little seams between the openings

Hey guys, thanks for all the nice words!  I really appreciate it since I'm always really impressed by modellers on this forum (possibly the most polite and helpful one I've seen, not that any are really terrible...but I'm sure you all know what I mean).

There are no rockets, but If you wanted to scratch some, the launcher is basically the same as a soviet BM-21 MRL.  This kit is odd, it has a nicely detailed engine which is almost impossible to see on this model in the series (there is a TD, and a SPG on the same Chassis made by trumpeter as well.  The only missing vehicle is the SPAAG)  However it has no real interior besides a floor inside the crew compartment, a simple chair in the drivers compartment and an air compressor.  I'd be really interested to see how the TC's station is meant to operate, as it is physically and functionally separated from the rest of the vehicle (like the driver's compartment).  There are apparently three other crew, but what their jobs are is beyond me.

The bad part of the tubes is on the top (notice no pics?)  I more or less copied a person on Armorama's method:

Primer

Tan

Mask

Light Green

Mask

Dark Green

Mask

Medium Green

Remove all masks.

Unfortunately for me, since I haven't seen any photos of these in the new camo scheme (and thats what I wanted to do) I just made it up.  I have a Tamiya cutting board which has a 5mm grid on it, and all my shapes were made from 1x1, 1x2, 1x4, 2x2, 4x4 blocks of tamiya tape assuming each block is 5mmx5mm.  It took a while and it would have been much easier on a vehicle with fewer complex shapes (such as an APC), but it was fun.  These two pics were early on in the process, and I eventually just started drawing grids on all of them to help with alignment, but my own impatience and inability to distinguish the first layer of masks after 2-3 layers of paint made some of them appear all weird.

Very nice!! Labor intensive both at 1/1 and 1/35th scales I'm sure.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure the Chinese won on the 'wow' factor of these vehicles, even if it is kind of silly in practical use.

Very impressive and well executed.
Congraulations on the camo job, as everyone else already stated that is just brilliant!

One question for you, I notice that the sides of the road wheels is in a different colour, can you explain why that is?

Very Best Regards
Johan

The sides of the roadwheels are (were) flat white.  Why?  Other than because I really like the contrast effect that it gives the model,

Because thats the way the way they apparently do it.  The difficult part is the standardized digi camo they're using, that would be intensely hard in 1/1 scale.

The real question is this:

WHY BLUE!??

Nice work Beav on a both an unusual subject and eye-catching scheme! Beer Beer

As for the blue scheme that is an interesting one as well to be sure...no clue as to the context but you have to admit it sure does break up the vehicle's outlines effectively and that's ultimately the point of any camo scheme. Wink

There is an alternate blue digi-camo scheme that they paint some of their strategic missile forces and air defense forces in; I hope to do that one too someday.
