Panzer Kampfwagen II Ausf F or G?
Posted by kllp101 on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 11:37 AM

I am currently building a Panzer Kampfwagen II Aus F/G (my second model) made by tamiya. It is a 1/35 scale kit and I am stuck at the turrent. I can't decide what scheme I should paint it because I can't decide if If should choose the F or G model. I did a bit of research and found out the G model were rarely made (the model with the storage bin in the back) and was primarly used in North Africa. The F model was used in Europe and also in North Africa. Since there were very limited amount of G models, should I build the F model?

An PZ II Ausf G can not be made from the Tamiya kit.  The Ausf G used a different suspension from that included in the kit.   The storage bin included was used on Ausf F's by the 5th light div. (maybe 21st Pz Div - it was one of the Afrika Corps units I don't have references with me currently)  So to answer your question -you have to build it as an Ausf F because you don't have the parts to make an Ausf G included in the box.

Thank you so much. THis kit was made a while ago and is fairly inaccurate in my opinion. So I now have to decide whether I should include a storage bin or not and the color will probably be afrika korps because of the decals they gave me.

Panzer IIs in Africa early on did nto have the turret stowage bin. That came later. Paint can be Panzer gray, RAL 7016, w/o bin (1941), Yellow Brown, RAL8000, w or w/o bin( 1941-42), or Brown, RAL 8020,  w/bin (1942/43).

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

Hey guys,

I always find it intriguing (and perhaps a little 'spooky') that when I'm seriously thinking about a next build or a build that I know I'll be doing shortly down the line a post always pops up asking very relevant questions about it!

I have just stocked up on the majority of the model magazines this month and on the back of one is an advert for the mixed range of new and older Tamiya 1/48 kits.

I was really impressed with the new 1/48 Panzer II and this has moved up the list as a definate 'soon to be built' build! It's looks quite impressive and with those horrid Die-cast chassis gone to Tamiya heaven I'm definately going to be building a LOT more 1/48 Tamiya stuff.

This early Pz II looks very nice and highly detailed - check her out:

Even the top run of track comes 'pre-sagged' and in one long section!

That's the best thing about 1/48 stuff - not only do these smaller builds look great when painted and weathered well but they take up a hell of a lot less space!

Helpful tip re the Panzer II - thanks Yes

Kind regards,

Ben Toast

Hey Ben I just picked up a Dragon Panzer II-B,the new smart kit with interior and even at 1/35 it is a very small kit with an interior to boot and miniscule magic tracks, looks quite daunting. At 1/48 that Tamiya kit has got to be absolutley tiny !!,but still not a complicated as the DML 1/35
