Dragon Pz.IV Ausf.G - COMPLETED
Posted by DoogsATX on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 8:41 AM

That rarest of Dragon's modeling subjects - the Panzer IV!

Overall, I enjoyed the kit. Not as fussy as some claim. Instructions had some frustrating moments (which build options correspond to which marking options...that would be nice to know), but were mostly decipherable.

This was also a ton of firsts for me - first winter camo, first friul tracks, first use of acrylic resin. Also my first and possibly last use of Woodland Scenics snow on a model. Made it look like a soft pretzel. Managed to strip most of it and replace it with a Future/talcum/bit of WS snow slurry that I hit with additional coats of Future and Alclad Aqua Gloss to give the impression of snow melting and refreezing and melting.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice indeed doog. Nothing looks overdone. How did you like the fruils? Now that I've tried magic tracks I'm begining to see how the cost is figured in. Did you use blacken-it or paint.

Real cool Doogs. I really like the weathering on the lower hull and all. Very smart build.

Thanks all!

I had a blast with this one...well...except for that part where I realize that acrylic resin dries HARD...and that I'd just slathered it all over my friul tracks (fantasic and super-highly recommended, btw)...and having to race to get them mounted up earlier than I'd planned.

Other than that...loved it. And I'm totally geared up for the Vorpanzer next!

Real nice, fellow-doog!

Sometimes mistakes are the est technique you can employ! Whatever you did it looks really good, honestly. LIke it just was plucked from the front!

Be aware that Woodland Scenics' snow actually makes a great "slush" by mixing it with gloss anything. Ans also that it's translucent, not opaque. If you want t make thick snow out of it over a base of white glue, you have to paint the surface white of whatever it goes on.

I'm just relieved to hear that you didn't use baking soda!

the doog

Real nice, fellow-doog!

Thanks Karl! Actually, this being my first time in the winter weathering wonderland, I leaned pretty heavily on your King Tiger article from a few months back. Weird how FSM never really imparts anything to me in the way of aircraft, but it's been more or less instrumental in my armor education!

Your post on not using baking soda was also very useful! Turned me to the talcum, but I want to try powdered silica too. The talcum is too dead-flat for my taste.

Re: the Woodland Scenics stuff...my problem isn't the look, exactly. It's the size of the stuff. Looked like pretzel salt.

Here's a shot of the "before" snow:

I'm always happy to hear that someone picked up something from one of my articles or WIPs, Doogs, so thanks for the mention! Embarrassed

I agree that the WS snow is a bit large in grain, but it serves a purpose for some applications--I used that to add snow to my rusted-out Impala in the current issue. But you're right--the talcum powder is more in scale. I just find it harder to control because it's so fine that it can be hard to secure.

I'll bet that combining the two in a plastic baggie would be quite the experiment?
