Forming stryne strips.
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, January 25, 2004 8:06 PM
I decided to scratchbuild the headlight protector things with stryne strip. the only prob is that when i bend it over the kit part, it will start to go flat again. it is very thin and all, but it just starts to go flat when i let go of it. right now i have it formed around the kit part- via double stick tape. if i just leave it in this form overnight will it stay? i also though about heating it some- will this work? thanks dudes Kisses [:X]

When bending the plastic cold you are asking the material to "cold flow", this causes stress in the plastic which is why it will want to return to it's natural state.

If you gently heat the material and allow it to cool in the new shape it will mold to that shape and stay. There may be so spread when it is cold due to the properties of the plastic.

the trick is EVEN heat, and not to strech the material in one area greater than another.
A hair dryer on high at a bit of a distance will give a nice even heat, you do not need much if it is only a slight bend.

Junior,

Tape your strip around a dowel and dip it in boiling water. Lift it out and run it under cool water. It will retain its new shape.
