In the book; Panzers in Normandy Then and Now, there is an excellent recount of SS Unterscharfuhrer Ernst Barkmann's exploits near St. Lo on June 27th, 1944, commonly refered to as the Battle of Barkmann's Corner. During this engagement, Barkmann and his crew single-handedly knocked out 9 Shermans, all the while being shot at, strafed and bombed by fighter-bombers, having a track torn off, a hull weld ripped open, a bent drive sprocket and his driver wounded. And he still managed to back over a hill and escape. The tank he used during this battle was a Ausf A with the tactical number 424. The only color image I can find at the moment is this small image of David Pentland's painting, Barkmann's Corner:

he would have had a Panther Ausf A late with Zimmerit number 424 at Normandy and in the Ardennes he had a Pather Ausf G number 401

By the way, Barkmann's Corner is a great scenario to play on PlayStation's Panzer Front bis. Kind of gives you an idea of what frantic pressure he and his crew must have felt during that battle. I nearly fall out of my chair playing it!

The photos that I have looked at so far of Panthers in SS Panzer Regiment 2 in Normandy show them with the vertically grooved, cross-hatched pattern of zimmerit.

As for Barkmann's Ausf G, #401, I have a lot of text about the battle at Manhay on Dec. 24th, but no description of his vehicle so far. Here again, I'm going to take the easy way out and drop in David Pentland's artwork of the event. I'll look some more when I have time.

I have a full-size print of his Counterattack at Villers Bocage, a striking rendition of Wittmann's historic rampage through this Norman village.

Pentland"s artwork shows 424 with the type 4 exhausts, with the 2 air intake pipes mounted on the left side exhaust, this is a late ausf A modification. We are of course assuming Mr. Pentland did his home work. Wink [;)]

KT 332, The second pattern, with the vertical grooves and the cross-hatching is the one on the SS Pz. Reg.2 Panthers at Normandy. They call it the "vertically rippled" pattern on Panzer Diesel.
