Tiger 1 interior
Posted by TheWildChild on Monday, September 26, 2011 1:41 PM

if there are any armor modelers that have pictures of the tiger 1's turret interior can you please post them on this thread? i am having extreme difficulty finding pictures of the gun elevation/turret traverse mechanisms.  i am working on Academy's 1/35 early tiger with interior, and the only real drawback i have found is that the gun elevation equipment does not line up, also, the few pictures that i was able to find showed that a few pieces should be on the opposite side of the turret than the instructions indicated.

any help would be greatly appreciated, either by pictures, or modelers that have built this kit and also noticed what i mean.

detailfreak (Greg) has been working on interior for his Tiger I so if you can use the search tool here on your right you might find good pictures or his WIP.

Wish I can help... I am not addicted to details like our friend Greg.

Your problems with the Academy kit won't be easily solved. About half the turret internal parts are simply not present in the kit, and the rest are misshapen and poorly scaled.

For example, take the two strengthening beams on the turret roof. Academy give them an I-beam profile; in reality they were simply flat. Academy place them offset to one side, but in reality they were equally spaced from the turret center line.

And that leads to another problem in the Academy kit. The turret has a misshapen plan outline. It puts the gun off-center, which is wrong. This isn't noticeable from outside if you don't look for it, but it throws everything off on the inside.

Here's a plan view of a Mid Tiger turret. If you have Academy's Early kit, a few parts would be different, but most would be the same and in the same places.

Compare this to your kit and you'll see the scale of the problems.

Try Google and see if you can find a copy of Tiger In Action published by Squadron Signal.  Full of black and white photos, including interiors.  Probably out of print.

I shelved this kit after I completed the road wheels. I had such trouble with fitting the top of the hull that I decided to put it on permanent hold for a while (even thought of salvaging the 48 road wheels to put on the version without the interior). This is the first Academy kit I've struggled with, every other one I've done has fit like a treat, I had no idea it had known issues.

In all seriousness the only reason it's still even around is I feel totally committed after masking and painting all those infernal wheels... no wonder you lost the war Germany! How many wheels does a T-34 have? 10. The Tiger on the other hand... 48! This is why I love modeling, I can look at the underside of the Tiger and see the mass of wheels and actually get some idea of the amount of precious steel was involved in creating one of those monsters.
