Psstoff & Bill: Thanks guys, I didn't think the running gear looked Japanese but wasn't sure what it was.

This would be really crazy to scratchbuild, I'd think if you brought it to a show you'd have to bring your references or the judges would think you just made it up.

Did the Japanes buy any Vickers 6 tonners? The Russian T-26 and Polish 7TP are based upon that vehicle and had the Carden-Lloyd suspension. Jadar sells the suspension as a resin aftermarket set. The tracks look alot like those on the 7TP. The track was also common with the T-26.

Any MOJO out there who can ID the basis for this "Swiiss-army-knife" of a tank will be greatly appreciated...

The photo is from Gordon L. Rottman & Akira Takizawa's 'World War II Japanese Tank Tactics from Osprey's Elite series.

The caption reads: 'Another capture from 2nd Tank Div on Luzon: an "SS" armored engineer vehicle of the division's Engineer Unit. The forks on the bow are for plowing up AT mines, and could also tear breaches in barbed wire and dense vegetation.'

Not sure where I got the idea it was a one of a kind vehicle- it's not mentioned in the caption. No mention of the vehicle is in the text and I've never seen it anywhere else including the large Polish book I have on the subject of Japanese AFVs.

Not sure what the running gear is on the tank, thought it was a Type 89 at first but it's not. Sorry, I didn't bring my other books with me to work and the power supply on my home computer went out so I'll have to post next Monday. The Japanese did import varoius foreign tanks including British and French before the war so it might not even be based on a Japanese hull.

do you remember if the gun was on two railroad tracks or one? if it was over $1000 and with a box that huge it had to be the dora.

I don't recall the photo on the kit box but the box for the extra cost aluminum barrel was roughly 1 foot long, the box for the aluminum breech was almost 1 foot long, so I presume the kit was the Dora railway gun in 1/35th scale.

That's almost as weird as the gigantic German railroad cannon I saw on the cover of Squadron's catalog a few months back!  Not for me, definitely.

 

 

I saw that 1/35th scale kit in it's huge box at my LHS last weekend for $1,050  with separate aluminum barrel and breech available at extra cost.

Don't know the price of the aluminum detail parts or whether they require seam removal.....

I'll see if I can hunt up the reference book, I don't remember the name now. I do remember this was the only photo of the vehicle. The caption called it a one of a kind engineering vehicle used for clearing mines and brush. I'll try to get more information posted tomorrow.

I think I was the first to ask if constructors kit came with the pontoons.

So yes. I want to float its pontoons (or something Manny would say)

Yes, I know. Check the first post of the second page, one made by me. I posted the link and the CyberHobby poster of the one with floats and I pre-ordered it (Sept 16th).

The post devolved into a discussion about the cost of the kit ($70+), but I figured it was well within the range of what I paid for when I first discovered Fine Molds IJA tank kits. And probably a better kit.
