A "little" something I've been working on.
Posted by dupes on Sunday, October 30, 2011 5:24 PM

Hey fellas - been a while since I posted anything up here in the armor forum...when time is at a premium, I guess I prefer spending it at the bench instead of taking/photoshopping/uploading pics. But it's winter now (snowed here yesterday and today), so my work time gets seriously curtailed!

Kit is the 1/35 Bandai EFGF M61A5 from the Gundam series. This thing is a beast. Threw the ruler in a couple of pics to give you an idea of the size...after it's painted, I'll put it next to some other well-known vehicles as well.

So far I've replaced the tow cables with picture wire, added a spare Trumpeter Stryker mine plow (from the M1132 kit which also has a mine roller), and made provisions to fit MV Lenses in the appropriate places. The kit comes with some (good) figs that will be painted up, and I plan on adding some modern/future-y stowage. Road wheels and tracks aren't pictured, as they're the poly-cap style and I worry I may not be able to get them off if I pop them on for pics!

Here's where I'm at as of tonight:

Doing a final review tonight of what's attached and what isn't, but I believe I'm ready to hit the paint booth.

Merkava/Abrams with the barrels off both! Looking good.

Also curious about the color scheme.

I think it would be cool if someone made a Scorpion form the Halo series.

Ahhhh yes, the Mammoth tank...a Command and Conquer staple! Big Smile

As far as the paint scheme goes - going to be a deck tan base (Tamiya - very slight greenish hue to it) with large alternating stripes of two greens. Probably only 4 color bands, two of each tone most likely. Just trying to decide if I want some random wavy pattern, or if it's going to be a splinter-type hard edge/angular thingy.

Base coat goes on this afternoon!

Definitely a beast and very well done!!!  I did notice one thing, though...Your mine plow isn't wide enough to be

effective.  It should extend out to just past the outer edge of the tracks.

All the best

This is waaaaay cool, dupes--I honestly want to get my hands on one of these and give it a go.

I say finish it in total realism; colors and all. Weather it up and make it look like something from Berlin, 1947, lol. That's my plan, at least!

VERY cool!

Doog - do it! They're awfully hard to come by, though...and the price reflects that in a big way. Best I'm finding today is through Amazon.com for $115 shipped. Surprise

As far as the plow - I think that calling it a "mine plow" (the name as applicable to the Stryker kit) may have been a bit misleading - let's just call it a "dozer blade". Used for pushing crap out of the way. That way, nobody complains, and I don't have to scratchbuild an entire plow! Stick out tongue

Glad you like it, guys! Base coat is drying as we speak...may have time to throw up a pic or two if I don't dive right into spraying the camo.

Turns out I didn't have time to upload any pics last night...you'll see why in a minute.

First, the basecoat - two supersmooth layers of Tamiya Deck Tan (to include some of the road wheels), one pre-gym, one post-gym. Let that dry while eating dinner with Mia.

Then spent the majority of my evening (and the majority of a roll of Tamiya tape) masking off the hard-edge camo pattern. An awful lot of little bumps and protrusions on the hull and turret of this thing...took a long time to get all of the edges to lay into all of the corners. Filled in the gaps with blue painter's tape.

About 11:00 by that point, but I was pretty fired up to get some color on there, so I plowed ahead with the alternating stripe pattern. The brown-green is good ol' Tamiya XF-62 OD, the lighter one is Vallejo "Panzer Green", which turns out NOT to be the right color green for panzers...at least not WWII ones! Didn't want the paint to sit for too long before peeling up the tape, so I set to work getting all of that off. The 1:00 a.m. result as follows:

Only had one minor patch of overspray (amazingly enough), and only a couple of instances of the basecoat peeling up (that was a lot of tape). Should be able to patch that up no problem.

Hopefully more to come tonight....think I'm going to need a nap after work. Sleep

Very cool Dupes! I'm not really into mecha but some of the Gundam stuff like this is really cool. I've had my eye on this one but am too cheap to cough up the money. And yes it does look sorta like a GDI Mammoth super-heavy tank Wink

Love the camo job and waiting to see how she comes out. BTW: I've started using Silly Putty instead of tape when masking irregular surfaces like a tank, not sure how well it would have worked here though.

Gamera - I almost ALWAYS use silly putty for my camo jobs - didn't think (even if I flattened it and cut it) that it would hold straight lines, especially after a 3-hour application job.

Thanks fellas! Debating whether to start the weathering by firing a really diluted coat of Deck Tan over the camo colors. Hmm.

I would spray heavily thinned base coat to help bring the camo together but since your "little" beast is a sci-fiction, its a different story...

My vote is yes let's spray!

Whoops! Yes I see what you mean, not the best stuff for a splinter camo job. Embarrassed

The tan sounds like a good idea to me. Yes

humm... a thought.. where it is Sci-Fi... maybe use one of the other colors to mist on,, not the deck tan.. and maybe use two colors seperatly, randomly over the tank,, heavily diluted of course..

Was the tank used more urban or rural-off road ?

Cool paint job there Dupes kinda reminds me of those sharp Swedish schemes on aircraft and S tanks.

As for the vehicle well wow it kinda reminds me of a Merkava IV on steroids or simply one who eats his greens.

Ahhh, the S-tank - very true! Definite resemblance!

Still plugging away. I abhor decals...nothing bugs me more than  long (successful) construction and painting phases, and then silvered decals. Blah. So, I'm shooting to come up with a complete set of dry transfers and paint masks for all of the markings. Using the kit decals as a guide, and adding a bit of different stuff that looks cool.

Also dug around the spare parts box to see what I've got to spruce up the build a bit - found some nice tapered antennae, big-link chain, razor wire, some spare ammo boxes...hoping I can come up with some packs/bedrolls that don't look too OIF/OEF (even though they are). Couple of Tamiya equipment sets to dig through as well. Maybe a nifty searchlight? Some barrel add-ons?

Hmmmm, what else would a future-tank be carting around?

That's a pretty funky camo job. Very appealing.

Got the markings ready to go on, but have run into a bit of a snag - apparently Bandai really means it when they lay out assemblies in a particular order...unlike most tanks, you are NOT able to add the drive sprockets afterwards! I have a broken axle to prove it - am fabricating a brass replacement now. For those of you considering doing one of these, add the front sprockets when they tell you to!

Been follow ya, dupes, over on the OYW GB.

Also, where did you get this kit? I've always wanted to build this one.

Keep up the Great Work!
