JagdPanther camo/paint
Posted by CBennett on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 6:17 PM

Ok guys im trying to get the stuff together for the JagdPanther build...I see the paints listed on the dragon model were Mr Color or some such...never used those only Tamiya paints and testors enamels...im thinking of going acrylic(never used those either). How are the Mr Color paints? good? bad? and should I just use what I have in the past with Tamiya? (if so does anyone know the corresponding Tamiya colors id need as im sure they are called something else by Tamiya) OR should I just stick with the mr Color..any big difference between the 2 paints?(Mr Color vs Tamiya). and what should be used to thin either down? I dont mind using the name brand thinners as I wont be painting so much as to make their cost be a big deal...maybe a model every few months but not much more than that(just dont have the room lol). I believe for the tank I will need:

1: some flat black to prime

2:the "yellow" base color

3: Green

4: the dark/burnt red

Now for the model i will be buying the Zim kit for the specific model...its the Early JagdPanther build Dragon kit #6458

I see the scheme on the box top..I also know that(from museum pics but they were black and whites) that other various camo patterns were used..I even say a few that seemingly just had no real camo pattern at all and were seemingly just base paints(one color)...again from the pics I could not tell if it was a straight yellow or grey???

A couple were even just 2 tone looked like the Yellow and green with no red at all...

And thoughts on the color/camo pattern for this build? I didnt really have any unit or specific reference I was building the model on just wanted my first build in almost 20 years to be something I liked :)

and info on any subject for this build will be appreciated.. from what brand or type of paint to be used to colors or camo or non camo patterns.

these are links to pics ive seen on the utter varying of patterns

I use Tamiya XF-60 for the yellow,XF-64 for the red-brown,and XF-58 for the green

if you weather and filter, you may want to lighten the XF-60 with some buff because the washes and filter will darken it a bit.

it's all about taste, what you want to attempt or what you can handle, since you said you didn't have any paticular vehicle in mind, you can go with the box art or pics in the instructions.I did a two color myself, see what you think :

The Striped version is very popular and rather easy to do.

Good point. The picture does appear to be a "Late" version. I honestly don't know.

I would stick to my guns on this CBennet.
The Dragon kit instruction has 2 different camos, a single colour dark yellow and a multicolour - dark yellow, red brown and "Khaki Green" .
I would go with Toyo72: use Tamiya XF-60 for the yellow,XF-64 for the red-brown,and XF-58 for the green.

Maybe lighten it up with XF-57 Buff.

Good luck!

very nice Thats the 2 color scheme 1 I saw also(meaning similar pattern). I had thought on doing like many do and doing all kinds of research and picking a exact regiment/tank company and all that but im up in the air on doing that..

Thanks for all the replies so far guys and especially the color #'s for the Tamiya stuff I just dont know enough about the Mr Color stuff Ive actually(though15+ years ago) used Tamiya stuff  so I think ive read that its one of the best airgun paints(sprays easily and nice) to use so I think I will stick with it..thanks also on the "lightening" it tip....here is a question I will ask here also instead of making a entire separate post.

Any tips(links) to how to do a 3 color camo pattern paint job...ive heard everything from people doing it freehand to different masking techniques..I just dont know which though..ive dont the 2 color patterns freehand and they came out "ok" but thats been years ago and back then i was not trying to be accurate or percise :)

I "freehand" all my camo schemes. I just use my imagination. I don't like precisely copying ones from a reference unless I"m specifically going for a specific tank. The way I see it, I'm building "my" tank model, and the camo scheme I put on it is what I would have done within regulations and contemporary trends at the time.

From what ive read ive seen several different things said as to the armor schemes...Im trying to figure out if its all true or which is. From what ive read/researched the tanks seem to have come from the factory in the yellow color and shipped to their units like that..from there ive read 2 different things

1. They went to a company motor pool area and were painted with a airbrush by mechanics there in the scheme they used(what ever it was). Each looked a bit different but it was a nice neat looking job as it was done in a area with a spray gun

2. They were sent to their units and given to their crews in the yellow and then the crews were given the green and yellow colors in terns of a paste that they then had to "thin" with what ever they had on hand and then the crews themselves painted with what ever was available the green and red brown onto the tank with anything from a airgun to a paint brush to rags or even mops....

so which of these was the truth or more prevelant? and if it was the later with the crews possibly crudely painting their tanks what would give a more realistic to that style of painting..doing it free hand by airbursh or actually doing it with a paintbrush to try to replicate the possibly "crude" methods that may have been sued by a crew...??

I DID find a good place that has some excellent paint job versions seemingly broken down by era(date) and units possibly..

The tanks were sent to the units in the base dark yellow. And the red and green did come in a paiste form. But wether they were painted by the crews themselves (the most likely option) or a motor pool, the end result would have been the same. Often they were poainted with an spraygun, but yes, sometimes these were not available so other things were used. But in most cases it would be an spraygun.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

I find one part XF-60 to one part XF-55 Deck Tan gives a very nicely faded Dark Yellow. Straight XF-60 is a little dark and has a slight greenish cast.

TY I will try to get both colors to mix always good to have stuff on hand as all I have now is 15+ year old Testors enamel thats all dried up :).

Do any companies make a "line" of Tank and or armor paints they sell in a set...Years ago(20 id say at least) I used to do a lot of Aircraft and picked up a set of Aircraft model paints that contained a bunch of paints relative to well..aircraft...I cant remember the maker or the exact names of the paints but it was stuff like RAF Tan and Green, Corsair blue, some greys and well you get the drift...just wanted to see if anyone made a armor related set like that like one for German tanks, one for American , etc,etc...

Have you tried Vallejo paints yet?  They are awesome.  The Model Color can be brush painted better than Tamiya and are thinnable to airbrush.  The delivery system is far superior also.  No more wasted paint and spills.

According to the Ultimate Paint Conversion Chart here are the equivalents.

XF-60=882

XF-58=890

XF-64=984

With Tamiya's distribution problems right now they are more accessible too.

sorry ... I suggest the VALLEJO MODEL AIR

71025 - Dark Yellow (i.e. RAL 7028 / Dunkelgelb)

71041 - Tank Brown (i.e. RAL 8017 / Rotbraun)

71011 - Tank Green (i.e. RAL 6003 / Olivgrün)

Colors are above named as enlisted in color chart of Vallejo

I will check out that paint also.. and the ONLY paints ive ever used(never owned a airbrush till Christmas time this year) was the old Testors Enamels and the old Tamiya stuff from the 1980's thats the last time I bought paint or did a model :) so im open to almost anything that works well.

just an information to follow... use the specific thinner for Model Air  Acrylic also. Just some drops only, stir all well and then use your airbrush.

Clean the small bottles at their outlet to avoid a fat drop with dry and solid parts into your airbrush. Otherwise you will cause malfunctions ... perhaps. However you should know it as it was also by use of brush and enamels.

So good luck.
