WW1 Whippet Tank - First Completion of 2012!
Posted by bufflehead on Sunday, January 29, 2012 10:16 PM

Hey fellow treadheads!  I just finished my first build of 2012, an Emhar 1:35 MkA Whippet tank from WW I!  I built this for wing_nut's (Marc) excellent group build,  "The Group Build to End All Group Builds: The Great War".

Although there are inaccuracies, soft detail and missing detail,  the Emhar kit still provides a solid base for the build.  Like most, I had to overcome some poor fitting hull panels and engineering, but nothing an experienced modeler can't overcome.   I added Model Cellar tracks, an Airwaves PE set and 1914 Hotchkiss machine guns from Caliber 35.  A few scratchbuilt items like the mufflers and grab handles topped it off.

Painted using Tamiya Acrylics (base color is a mix of Khaki, OD and Buff).  Filters, oil washes and pigments using MIG products.  The kit decals were thick and temperamental, but worked out in the end.  I found some white sewing thread that was the right size for the muffler's thermal wrap, dunked it in the remains of my morning coffee to tint it an off-white color.

I hope you like it.

Ernest

Where's the jaw-drop smilie? Freaking awesome Ernest. I love the weathering. Perfect with not going overboard. Are those stripes decals? Look great.

Ernest:

Great job all around!  Tried one of Emhar's heavy tanks (Mark IV I think) and the fit left something to be desired. Your model looks perfect though. And I love the fading/weathering.

I need to tackle another Great War tank someday. Whistling

Thanks man. Yes

I've always liked the whippet and is my favorite WW ! tank. However, doesn't it seem the engine should be in the rear and not the other way around?

Very nice work on this one Ernest, very nice indeed! Love the little details like the wrap on the exhaust and the weathering on the finish. Yes

Wow, thanks for all your kind words guys!  I really means something to have praise coming from the members of this forum.  Everything I did I learned from all the great modelers on this site.....YOU GUYS! Bow Down

Eric - the kit does have the red & white stripe decals, but there was no way I was going to use them over all those rivets and molded detail.  Instead I masked with Tamiya tape and sprayed the stripes using my AB.  Next up is a certain Bronco A13 Mk.I/Cruiser Tank Mk.III that I'm a wee bit late in starting.....Whistling

DM - "Ancient Merkava"!  I like it!!  It does sorta make sense though!

wingie - Thanks for adding the Whippet to your website!  I feel very honored to have one of my builds grace your site. Big Smile  BTW, I live in a little town called Hercules which is NE from San Francisco,  about 25 mi across the bay.

Hi Ernest  : )

An absolutely beautifully finished, perfectly photographed model...excellent colors and.perfectly weathered, and by that I mean it is not to the point of any exclusion of detail visually ... just fits my personal taste...great job manYesYes

Large monochromatic panels are a pain, but yours are tricked out just right

I have seen the Whippet done in 1/16 also but not as nice this one.

I also want to thank you for the kind words on my recent post, most appreciated..

I live in a small world... I didn't even know Marc had this GB going on.. I gotta get out more

WOW! Another "Old Timer" here again! And with a masterpiece to show!

That is honestly just perfect! Everything about it, from the painting, to the weathering, the detailing--just spectacular, honestly!

Gamera - Thanks!  Yeah, the Emhar kits are about the only way to go unless you want to spend big bucks on a resin kit.  They're tough to get right, but with some TLC they can be made into respectable builds.  Some AM parts don't hurt either....I'm SO glad those Model Cellar tracks are available.   I also have the Emhar MkIV Female tank and I want to get to it this year if possible.

Bill - You're too kind sir!  You're one of my inspirations on these forums and much of what I've learned has come from builders like you!  Now if I can only build at your usual prodigious rate.....Big Smile

Marc - DOH!  OK, that went right over my head!!  Dunce  I think I'll hang on to the Whippet for now, unless you're interested in a trade for your Wingnut Wings Roland D.VIa???  Now THAT's a beautiful build!

Mike - Thank you Mr. redleg!  Just please don't drop an 8" shell on it from your current AFV M115 Howitzer!  The armor on these WWI tanks just can't handle that much firepower!!

tread - Glad you liked it!  I was awed by your detailing of the Char 1 BIS so I tried to do so a little of the same with the Whippet!   I'm glad I didn't have to do a multi-color camo job though, plain khaki green suits me just fine!

Karl - "Old Timer"!!  I never considered myself as such, but now that I think about it I've actually been a member for over 5 years!  I guess I am an "Old Timer" and I'm proud of it!   I'm glad you liked the Whippet Karl, you know you've reached another level when the doog provides such praise!  You're another FSM forum member whose work I've always loved and aspired to.  Thanks for sharing all your work with us, like your current Waffentrager!  That is one beastly cannon!!

Thanks tellis!!  It was a fun build; challenging, but enjoyable nonetheless.  I stretched my legs quite a bit with the weathering so that in itself was an accomplishment!  I'm glad you liked it!

Sir!

Maybe you can help us.

I'm looking for a tank trucks for Emhar kit from the Model Sellar 1/35 for diorama with MkIV & Whippet (diorama with a broken tank)

But they no longer produce them. Perhaps you have a few Model Sellar trucks? Just 5-10 pieces - only a few pieces will be enough to make a diorama.

Can I get them from you?

Regards!
