Replace vinyl tires?
Posted by knoxb on Monday, February 13, 2012 12:33 AM

Why replace vinyl tires?  is it an issue with accuracy? or something about the vinyl material..might melt or something?

I've used resin replacements, but I have also successfully weathered vinyl tires.

I'm currently thinking about a set for the HET 1070...but that's a lot of wheels, and no small expense.

Any feedback on Real Models resin wheels/tires?

Some people consider them less accurate than resin, & resin can hold more detail, example Italeri wheels are a bit toy-like.

Some are just wrong,  eg, the AFV Club 155mm Long Tom has very nice wheels, but are better suited to Post WW2, or the AFV Club Centurions, where the Vinyl 'tyre' part of the wheel includes a bit of the 'iron' part, rendering them pointless.

Some just don't like them, & some just like to get all the possible accessories available!

Historically some vinyl tires could react to paint & plastic, but if YOU are happy with them, use them.

Make sure they are washed clean,  a 3m green pot scrubber will help take seams & the shine off, & scuff them up a bit, I would put a barrier between the vinyl trye & plastic wheel, eg, paint the whole hub, inc. the insides, a coat of future works here, then assemble & spray tyre + wheel with future.

I avoid cellulose & enamel lacquers, paint & thinners on Vinyl, but if you use acrylic varnish or future as a barrier, you can paint & weather to taste.

Jon covered it well.  Basically though, I think it is just the latest fad to change out vinyl wheels for resin AM ones.  I find most vinyl wheels are just fine to use.

Here's something I learned from my Auto modeling--vinyl tires will react over time to unpainted plastic rims, hubs because of some reaction between the gases that slowly escape from the vinyl. You have to paint the rims and any plastic that comes in contact with the vinyl, and then you should be fine. Use a good primer and you should be fine.
